Actor Robert F. Chew, best known for the character Proposition Joe he played on HBO’s The Wire, has died. Chew died Thursday at his home in Baltimore of apparent heart failure during his sleep. He was 52. Chew broke into TV with a role in Homicide: Life On The Street and appeared in the miniseries The Corner and the TV movie Something The Lord Made. He also taught and mentored young actors at Baltimore’s Arena Players, and he maintained his relationship with the troupe after his career took off with David Simon’s HBO series. He introduced new talent from the group to casting directors and coached young actors who played students in the Baltimore City School system in Season 4 of The Wire. Chew continued to teach in the Arena Players Youth Theatre after The Wire ended production in 2007. ”Robert was not only an exceptional actor, he was an essential part of the film and theater community in Baltimore,” Simon said today in an email to The Baltimore Sun. “He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working”. Simon added, “Robert’s depiction of Proposition Joe was so fixed and complete — from the very earliest scenes — that the writers took for granted that anything we sent him would be finely executed.”

Such a talent on screen!
He will be missed.
RIP Robert. You did great work on “The Wire”…. It’s amazing how many talented and solid thespians go relatively unnoticed for most of their careers and, if they are lucky, as Robert Chew was, get a great role such as the one he snared in “The Wire”…. Meanwhile, you have overexposed actors and actresses such as Ms. Lohan, squandering her talent and life away with reckless abandon. Indeed, life is not fair, but we already knew that….
My condolences to Robert’s family, friends and loved ones. May the young people he mentored in Baltimore one day grow up to grace the big (or small) screen with their own acting, inspired the memories of his guidance.
Mr. Chew brought such humanity and humor to the role of Prop Joe, it is not surprsing to learn that he displayed these qualities in life. I enjoyed his work tremendously and am sad to hear of his passing.
Great show! Great actor.
“I got a proposition for you” How sad that this man who obviously worked so hard for his art passed at such a young age. At least he seems as though he’ll leave behind a positive legacy.
Prop Joe you beautiful actor, youwent too soon. Now you’re at the big West Side of Baltimore in the sky. Say wassup to Omar, Snoop, Stringer Bell and DeAngelo Barksdale. The game is still the game.
Prop Joe was East Side. Wonderful, amazing actor and a key part of the best show in the history of TV.
Im very saddened by this news…before Robert became Proposition Joe, he was my coworker at Waynes BBQ at the downtown Baltimore Inner Harbor…he was a host, i was a busboy….this was 1997…i knew he wanted to sing but imagine my surprise when i found out he was one of the main stars on the Wire after i moved to.LA to break n2 the bizzness…lol…damn he beat me… wish i knew then he had a passion for acting…but personally, i remember him as a cool guywho had a fade…lol…not the locks like he had on the show….RIP my brutha!!
Close your eye’s Joe.
He will be missed. Such talent! RIP, Mr. Chew.
Was absolutely mesmerizing in The Wire. He created one of the finest characters in television drama. He will be sorely missed.
