EXCLUSIVE: NBC has hit the pause button on midseason comedy series Save Me starring Anne Heche after two episodes for a major behind-the-scenes changeover. Alexa Junge, who joined the project after the pilot as executive producer/showrunner, is out. Production on the series has been put on hold while a new showrunner is put in place. I hear talks are underway with The Big C
creator/executive producer Darlene Hunt to take over the reins of the show, produced by Sony TV and Original Film. The single-camera comedy, created by John Scott Shepherd, stars Heche as a woman who lets herself — and her marriage — go until she undergoes an “awakening” that transforms her spiritually and physically into a desirable and outspoken woman who just might be channeling god.
Save Me has not been scheduled, allowing NBC to take time and re-examine the series’ creative direction. The project has been a favorite of the network’s brass from the get-go, and I hear they are very invested in the show. Save Me was originally developed by NBC’s head of comedy Tal Rabinowitz while she was SVP comedy at Sony TV. It was initially set up at Showtime just as current NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt was leaving the pay cable network in 2010. Save Me was the second pilot greenlighted by NBC last season, only behind comedy Go On.
The Big C creator Hunt would bring another piece to The Big C reunion on Save Me, joining other key auspices who worked on the Showtime comedy series including Greenblatt, who developed and greenlighted it; Rabinowtz, who developed it at Sony TV; as well as Sony and Original Film, which are producing the dark comedy starring Laura Linney which is heading into its final season. Save Me is one of two NBC midseason comedy series that stopped production this season because the network was not happy with their creative direction, along with Next Caller. In that case, NBC scrapped the series altogether.
Friends alumna Junge is under a deal at Universal TV and is expected to segue to development or another series. UTA-repped Hunt, who has an overall deal at Sony TV, has a female-centered single-camera project in consideration at CBS, which she is executive producing with Josh Berman.

My favorite network comedy pilot of the year, but like Hannibal, they’re going to throw it on the schedule with no idea what to do with it. Shame.
But at least we get a full season of Guys with Kids!
I’m confused… they’ve only produced 2 episodes so far? How is that possible? This was greenlighted early.
I’m confused as well. Feels like this show was greenlighted and put into production at least six months ago. What the hell is going on?
If Hunt does indeed take over this could be great news for the series. “The BIG C” was fantastic and mixing that leadership with Anne Heche could work very well with the NBC brand.
While Darlene is a talented writer, The Big C has been run since the beginning by Jenny Bicks, one of the best show runners and writers out there.
Get your comedy shit together NBC!
Please dump Andy Weil.
Did he pass on something of yours? Did he punch you in the face? I don’t get how anyone’s making the comment above. I’ve worked with Andy a ton since he landed at Universal and he’s hands-down one of the most creative, supportive, politcally savvy studio execs I’ve ever worked with. Maybe I’m missing something, but maybe that something is just sour grapes…
You say that about everyone but usually after they die.
Not really. My grandma’s dead and I can tell you, she didn’t have a nice bone in her body. Also, completely talentless.
It’s in the genes then. That explains it.
This season NBC has replaced the showrunners on Community, Save Me, Up All Night (twice!), Animal Practice, Whitney and Smash.
The NBC disaster zone is far funnier than the shows themselves, barring the unintentional comedy on Smash.
This is shocking considering her track record. I mean, she was a writer on Friends for God’s sake. What is this town coming to when someone who worked on a hit series can’t be entrusted to steer a fledgling comedy and work their magic to guide it to Hit City?
“What is this town coming to when someone who worked on a hit series can’t be entrusted to steer a fledgling comedy and work their magic to guide it to Hit City?”
When a significant portion of the decision makers were still in diapers when Friends was ruling for a decade…
“she was a writer on Friends for God’s sake.”
lol. carte blanche for everyone who ever wrote on a hit series!!! farcical.
So what happened to Alexa Junge? Is Anne Heche eating showrunners for lunch?
No, NBC is.
Andy Weil is one of the smartest, most creative and hardest working executives in the business. Not to mention that he has absolutely nothing to do with this show as SAVE ME is produced by SONY TV for NBC.
When will network execs finally realize that working on “Friends” means little-to-nothing when it comes to creating another comedy? They didn’t learn after WORK IT, and they won’t learn now. This is why network tv sucks, and all the awards go to cable.
The networks hemorrhage viewers every year. Now, it’s gotten to the point where NBC and FOX are often outrated by their “minor league” affiliates, USA and FX. Why? The huge bureaucracies these networks operate with insures that every show is watered down until it’s got the consistency of Gerber babyhood.
Network TV reminds me a lot of the American Auto Industry — you feel bad for them because no one is buying their product. Until you see what they’re selling.
