Kerry Washington, the star of ABC’s Scandal who also has a key role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, was tactfully circumspect today when Deadline asked about Spike Lee’s comments regarding the movie. Lee recently said he won’t be seeing Django Unchained because “It’d be disrespectful to my ancestors to see that film.” During a conversation on the Hollywood set of Scandal at the end of ABC’s portion of the TCA press tour, Washington declined to comment specifically about Lee because “I love Spike and I respect him and I really love working with him.” But concerning Django, Washington said: “I really appreciate the fact that lots of people were anxious and nervous about what the film was, but went to see it to make a decision of their own about it.” The actress, who worked on the movie during a hiatus from the TV series, said the film is allowing people to be “more open and honest about the issues of America’s history.”

I appreciated Kerry’s character because she never stopped fighting for her freedom. The movie was not tasteful, however, it was well made. Honestly, I think no awards committee should consider giving DJango an award for “Best Film” or from any over all category. I can understand “Best Actor or Actress”. I might even be able to receive “Best Director” but I cannot endorse the movie and would hope that no awards committee would give it “Best Motion Picture”.
Please explain why Jamie Fox was not nominated for an Oscar in DJango and yet the movie is up for several awards. How is that Denzel won for Training Day? In case you missed it… The Black man killing White slave owners vs the Black Man killing his own race.
Best wishes to Christoph Waltz.
The screenplay writer (Quentin Tarantino) underwrote Jamie Foxx’s and Kerry Washington’s roles. The main driver of action, the decision-maker, the one with the most and most memorable dialogue in Django Unchained is Christopher Waltz’s Dr. Schultz character.
Tarantino constructed a movie for Waltz to win an Oscar. Possibly Leonardo di Caprio and Samuel L. Jackson could also have been nominated and won for Best Supporting Actor. But in the Oscar race, there can be only one and the producer (The Weinstein Company) put the force of their marketing behind Christopher Waltz.
Not Samuel L. Jackson. Not Jamie Foxx. Not Kerry Washington.
Every resource in the movie from writing to directing to marketing was thrown behind Waltz. The other players in the movie provided support to Waltz for Waltz to be recognized.
