EXCLUSIVE: Get ready for another installment of Step Up, the under the radar franchise that continues to do strong business, particularly overseas. Summit Entertainment has just set John Swetnam to write the script for a film that has Scott Speer returning to direct and Offspring partners Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman producing.
Step Up 5 will build to a big dance-off and the intention is to get the leads of the previous films to return in cameo roles. There’s no telling whether the biggest star to emerge from the series, Channing Tatum, will be among those. But he must have good memories. The 2006 original film helped launch Tatum’s career, and he married his lead actress and dance partner in the film, Jenna Dewan. Step Up 5 is intended to be a 3D effort.
Swetnam wrote the scripts for Evidence and the upcoming Black Sky (previously known as Category 6), and he’s also scripting a hush hush project at New Line. Swetnam is repped by Paradigm and Benderspink.

This is what is wrong with the film business.
I agree, it’s like they just keep making movies that the audiences will pay to see. Makes no sense at all.
Congrats John. Well deserved!
Contrats to a good dude and a good friend. Well deserved Swetnam!
This would only work if they pull a fast five and Bring everyone from the previous film.
Great.
This’ll make it easy for him. He doesn’t have to run around message boards, pilfering ideas for his next “group of teens with cell phones” script.
How much is your soul worth, John?
It’s an honor for anyone to get paid to write in this town.
Sorry it doesn’t measure up to your level of humanity, bro.
Maybe Pacific Rim will?
While I despise the “Step Up” movies of the world, I would love the opportunity to get paid to write the script for this, if it was the only job I could get… SIGN ME UP!
Congratulations John Swetnam on landing a new script deal. The money is good, but the work is even better. No matter the assignment. Yes, it’s no Stanley Kubrick masterpiece or even a respectable piece of cinema, but to get paid to write in this town, a job is a job and a script is a script.
For what it’s worth, that company (Offspring) does nothing but make hits. Maybe Rock Of Ages and if I recall one other may be the sole exceptions, but track record wise, there can’t be a much safer bet than a movie produced by those two. And no, this isn’t their mother, father, spouse or friend. Just a keen observer.
LOL! Are you being serious? Is this Matt Smith? HAS TO BE. LOL!
Those movies have writers? Human writers? I thought they were all written by monkeys (no offense to monkey writers reading this).
Cool, a dance movie filmed with cell phones! I’m guessing the characters spend most of the movie addressing the camera. Who needs dramatic conflict or subtext when the characters can just turn to camera and explain everything? Between busting out some righteous dance moves, of course.
I guess the OWAs didn’t come flying in after the success of EVIDENCE (a crappy, found footage that rips off USUAL SUSPECTS story beats), an CATEGORY SIX (another crappy, found footage, that was ripped off of DAY 38.) Those other scripts, what, THE NEVERLAND, HIDE & SEEK, GENESIS, all shit. The hush-hush project at New Line is probably another shitty, found footage project.
This dude is the epitome of Hack Writer.
Um, yeah, so in other words, you can’t stand the guy’s writing, but you read EVERY SINGLE script of his you can get your hands on?
“This food is terrible — and the portions are so small!”
People are touting this dude as the most hard working, efficient, screenwriter, so I read his scripts. Obviously, it’s quantity over quality for him. Face the facts, dude. This guy pulled a horseshoe out of a leprechaun’s ass. Go read HIDE AND SEEK, you’ll see how good he really is.
Nabbing ANY assignment is extremely difficult. It’s an accomplishment no matter how you spin it.
EVIDENCE, CATEGORY 6, THE NEVERLAND, HIDE & SEEK, GENESIS…
5 original specs in less than two years? This is why John is getting articles in deadline and Hackywood is just blithering. Swetnam is prolific as hell, a hard worker, and a lovely person.
He busts his ass, churns out pages, and he’s been doing it for YEARS.
John deserves his success cause he worked for it. Period.
Wow…. i already watch Step Up Revolution and i think that was wonderful , so Step Up 5 will be better… ::D
I wish Ryan Guzman and Kathryn Mccormick would be the leads and also together with Misha Gabriel and Twitch. <3 Ive watched the Step Up 4 and all the characters there are the best! Especially, Ryan Guzman! Forever RYAN GUZMAN! Any, Congrats!
Wow… a few nasty comments on deadline, what a shocker.
Couldn’t be happier for John. I met him randomly at a bar one night and mentioned I was a writer. At the time I was really struggling to get my screenplays read and was rather down on my luck in terms of getting noticed. Later that week we went out, he bought me dinner and gave me a bunch of awesome advice. Over the year we stayed in touch & he’s continued helping me along the way. Fast forward to now–I found a rep and have something going out later this year.
… And for all you knocking the step up franchise get over yourselves. They’re fun movies, if you dislike them–don’t see ‘em.
Work is work. And knowing swetnam he’ll write the script in a week
And knowing Swetnam, he’ll write a shitty script in a week. And some other writer will be called in to rewrite the fuck out of it.
But hey, work is work, no matter how sloppy it is. Smart move Summit.
OMG I’m sooooo excited I LOVE Step Up Movies!!! Step Up Revolution is my favourite <3
