EXCLUSIVE: Family Guy veteran Steve Callaghan is joining American Dad as executive producer and new showrunner. In
the showrunner duties, Callaghan succeeds American Dad co-creators Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman who remain executive producers on the series. The changeover is part of Seth MacFarlane‘s strategy of keeping things fresh on his Fox/20th TV animated series by shaking things up at the top. MacFarlane is also known for deep loyalty to his writers, most of whom have been with him for a long time, so while they may move among his various shows, MacFarlane’s writer-producers rarely leave. For example, Callaghan was a member of the original writing staff of Family Guy. He was named executive producer and co-showrunner in 2009. After a three-year stint with Callaghan and Mark Hentemann at the helm, another long-time MacFarlane cohort, Rich Appel, was brought in last fall as new showrunner. (He came from MacFarlane’s third Fox series, Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show, which he ran.) Callaghan and Hentemann stayed on after the showrunner change, and WME-repped Callaghan is now taking the reins of American Dad, which is in its eighth season.

Steve is a great guy. Happy for his success!!
Steve is possibly the NICEST guy I have ever met in TV. I am thrilled for him and the show! Congrats!
He likes to “shake it up” at the top? This is just plain weird. What’s really going on here?
Yeah this is weird. AD is my favorite of Seth’s shows and it doesn’t need a shake up.
I freaking love this show.
AMERICAN DAD! is Macfarlane’s only good show; even Seth himself has acknowledged it’s superior to the others. I can understand his desire to raise the other two up it’s level by moving staff around from show to show- but it’s more likely he’ll just hurt AD!
Steve is the absolute nicest guy around. He is smart, funny and hardworking. Couldn’t happen to a better guy! Can’t wait to see what is coming!!
oh, This is bad.
Did you see the most recent AD episode? it was god awful and it looked like they put a lot of work into it getting Patrick Stewart to narrate be on camera in person, which was rather awkward (not in a funny way either) and dull. Also completely off kilter with Scene setup characters and voice actors throughout the episode story was dull and predictable throughout. Really bad. Dunno if has anything to do with the change but yea. . .
These episodes take more than a year to produce. The episode that aired last Sunday was produced more than a year ago.
The reason could be that The Cleveland Show–the critically panned Family Guy spin-off that Callaghan was formally in charge of–is possibly getting cancelled by the network…
Do your homework, Moron. Callaghan never worked for the Cleveland Show. That was Rich Appel.
I AGREE SO MUCH TO THIS COMMENT … WHAT HAPPENED GUYS >????? This is horrible horrible news. Both Family Guy and Cleveland are terrible shows and American Dad, the show that had NO staff intermingling with the other two, was the only good one. Now this is happening. I honestly hope he has no control or this show will become utter garbage.
Dear new guy, please don’t ruin this show. Family Guy and Cleveland Show are a vast empty wasteland of anti-comedy and American Dad has been pretty great for years. I swear to God if you start doing non sequitor cut away gags and pop culture references instead of actual structured comedy I will mail you a piece of my poop.
