The Office exec producer Greg Daniels announced at TCA last week that Steve Carell would not make a re-appearance in the show’s last season or the final episode and Carell explained why in a recent interview with Access Hollywood. “I just didn’t think it was right for the character, because that character had had an arc within the story and kind of grew and sort of evolved past the idea of the documentary,” Carell told Access Hollywood’s Tim Vincent. Carell said he does plan to visit the set, though, before its nine-season run ends. “I’m really good friends with everybody on the cast and with [executive producer] Greg Daniels and I want to go back to say, ‘Hi,’ certainly, before it all ends, but I just thought, in terms of the character, it didn’t make sense,” he said. Carell made his comments at Sundance where he was promoting his new film The Way, Way Back.

I don’t think a lot of fans would care how he integrated into the story, it would be natural for “the office” to go Denver for his Wedding. They would just like to see one of the most iconic tv characters of all time and the true heart of the show, one last time.
When most people leave a job, they don’t go back for a visit. Especially if they moved across the country.
I think it’s safe to say that most people aren’t Michael Scott.
Steve, I like you, I think you are talented and funny, and I’ll always go to your movies, but just be honest. It’s not that the “character” has evolved and that is why you’re not returning, it’s that you as an actor have evolved and don’t want to take steps backwards. You’ve been there, done that, and kicked ass doing it. No need to apologize for not wanting to reprise a role and character that you’ve already put to bed. You’ve moved on, so should we.
Totally agree with your admiration and assessment. I really wish he’d reconsider though. It’s one last dance! Bring back “Deangelo Vickers” while we are at it…
Really? With all the inconsistent things his character did on the show that’s what he thinks doesn’t make sense? Would be great to see him return for a brief cameo. Wouldn’t it make sense for his character return to get married or have a Skype conversation (since they Skyped Colbert in this season). It doesn’t make sense that this character would have zero contact with the characters.
“It doesn’t make sense that this character would have zero contact with the characters.”
Couldn’t agree more. His character was so invested in the lives of his coworkers that it doesn’t make sense for him to abandon them. We haven’t even see a card or call from him.
Those of us who have seen “Life’s Too Short” know the real reason.
If he really wanted to return, he could make a cameo via a discovered old videotape ala Scream 3.
….and no one watches the show since NBC ruined the Thursday Night line up.
The show should have ended the day Steve Carell left the show. I don’t blame him at all.
Steve and his character had their good bye “tour” now it’s time for the others to have their moment in te spotlight. I respect Steve for understanding that.
Even Clooney came back and he’s got an Academy Award.
You guys honestly think he’s going to “visit the set” just to say “hi” to Greg Daniels and the cast/crew? The same group of people he said ‘hi’ and then ‘bye’ to for almost a decade? That same group of people he likely sees around town pretty regularly as a working actor/writer/comedian/producer?
There’s no better alibi than the one in “plain sight” that everyone knows about – Carell will be on set for a cameo and not to say “hi.”
Like Steve, I too left the office… after the third season. I won’t be going back.
ie the money wasn’t enough. For 1-2 million for a brief appearance he would have been there in a second. I bet NBC wasn’t willing to break the bank for him, so he didn’t show.
He looks like Chris Cilizza in that picture.
Carell has some swamp land he’d like you to look at, too.
as a fanboy, i’d love to see him back, but he really is right. it would feel weird and disjointed. it would also tarnish the memory of his last scene. it was a great way to leave the character and they shouldn’t mess with that.
oh God a self-centered actor philosophizing about his “character” IT’S FICTION. NO ONE CARES. JUST MAKE A GOD DAMN CAMEO. IT’S THE LAST EPISODE YOU MORON.
finally someone said it…
AGREED!!!!!
What a pretentious snob… dude, you’re an actor, you made the role of Michael Scott a tremendous hit… sacrifice a couple days (and get paid for it) and do something for the fans that put you on the map!
He’ll regret this one day!
Why couldn’t he come back? He coulda been there for a reason, he’s married and lets say to show off his baby too! Most of recent has been forced comedy plots for the office. They are all going other ways. Jims new job, Mike is in Colorado, more and more closure. I bet ya Dwight will still be followed by the camera man last part of the last episode.
The Farm.
We are talking about Michael Scott. He considered the place was his home and the worker his family from the beginning.
I was a huge fan of the show and Steve’s portrayal of Michael. I know the thousands and thousands of loyal Office fans feel let down by Steve’s decision to let this season go by without at least one appearance by Michael. I know he doesn’t owe us anything, but wouldn’t it be a nice thank you to the fans if he would make an appearance. This “compromise the character” means nothing to the fans because we only want to see Michael one more time (old reruns don’t count).
I assume they’re doing stuff with whether the documentary ever airs.
Why would he have to play Michael post-Denver?
I figure if the idea of cutting the documentary is in the finale at all, they could have something like Michael’s lost first interview with the film crew about whether to shoot the documentary at all. Something like that.
I am a big fan of steve carrell… Please appeare in the office one more time. You were so good in the show the whole cast has so much chemestry together,i dont understand why you left to begin with..
Mr. Carell, thank you for working at ‘the Office’ as long as you did. You are hilarious and laughter IS the best medicine.
Eat your own shit Steve. Don’t garnish and serve.
Didn’t he ask the documentary crew in ‘Goodbye Michael’ to tell him when the documentary airs which it will be as we have seen so it would make sense
