When he announced in August that the current ninth season of The Office will be the series’ last, developer/executive producer Greg Daniels was hopeful that the final season and especially the series finale would feature original central character Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell for The Office‘s first seven seasons.”We certainly wish Michael Scott would return,” Daniels said at the time. “But we’re not going to put pressure on Steve to write something only he could do.”

Today NBC boss Bob Greenblatt all but shut the door to that possibility. “We’re hopeful but I don’t think (Carell) will,” Greenblatt said after the NBC executive session. “He left in the way he wanted to leave, and he and Greg talked about it, and I don’t think he will. There’s maybe a little Hail Mary pass on a cameo, but I think the decision would be compromising his schedule.”

what schedule? does he even have a career left at this point
And who cares? The guy is flat-out boring.
Exactly. What schedule? The one he has making those “blockbusters”. Those million dollar money making movies he chose to “act” in that couldn’t wait until The Office series ended. That’s why I love the way Gervais ridiculed him in the Warwick Davis show. I know he had to chase the paychecks while the stove was hot, but I will never understand the logic of him leaving the show. Those bad movies could have been done during the off-season.
The guy was on the show seven years. It’s not like he cut and ran after year two or three. Just because the producers decided to drag this show out long after it should have been canceled isn’t his fault. I think seven years is quite long enough. He fulfilled his contract, was apparently a professional everyday, and left with no ill-will from anyone.
Hey, don’t dismiss “Anchorman II.”
That sucks, would have made a nice surprise
jason,,,maybe you should get out a little more,,,,try looking at IMDb and learn something.
Steve, come on! Give them one week, that’s not much.
To film a couple scenes in 1 episode would only take 3 days of his time tops. And it’s not like he’s working on something else, all his movies have bombed. (Crazy, stupid, love was embraced as a Gosling/stone pic).
Clearly this isn’t true. Crazy, Stupid, Love made $150 million, Date Night made $150 million, Despicable Me made $500 million, Get Smart made $230 million, even Dinner for Schmucks made $90 million (who fucking knows how that happened).
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World died quickly but it got dumped into 1,500 theaters by Focus, so that’s understandable.
Coming up he has Anchorman 2, DM 2, and Foxcatcher. Plus Burt Wonderstone, which should be big. He’s doing great (more than I pegged him for when he started).
Steve is busy right now shooting a blockbuster movie with Katherine Heigel, Mischa Barton and Chad Michael Murray.
I heard Josh Hartnett was also attached to this classic in the making.
So much for Mr. Nice Guy. Ungrateful idiot!
Steve Carell is gonna win the oscar in 2014. Foxcatcher sounds like awards gold
Don’t blame him. His last episode SHOULD HAVE been the series finale.
This last season of The Office has been a complete waste of time for everyone involved, nothing but a last gasp money grab for a series that should have ended with Michael Scott’s departure. Steve Carrell’s absolutely right to want nothing to do with it.
I don’t buy it. He’ll be back to say goodbye.
This show outwore its welcome a year ago and Carrell has a busy movie career going for him, so he’s right in declining to do this show. He left on his own terms and good for him to do so.
Fan or no fan, this still makes Steve come off like as somewhat of a jerk. That kind of status sticks with you, ask Rob Morrow.
“And it’s not like he’s working on something else”
HAHAHAHA!! Yeah, he just has one movie coming out next week at Sundance. And a comedy with Jim Carrey in March. And also Despicable Me 2 in June. Did I already mention that Foxcatcher comes out in October? Oh, and wait Anchorman 2 comes out in December too. But yeah other than that I agree with you that he’s not working on something else.
He better go do some part 2s. Those other films will bomb like always. Plus you know his agent is telling him to jump on that 10 day contract and finish his tv career with the office (ala a basketball player). As a make-up to his original fan base and to get in the graces of the few movie fans he has left.
He could come back and finally jump off that roof onto that bouncy castle with everyone in the parking lot watching. Soon as he “lands”, Creed could ask “who was that little guy, and didn’t he used to work around here”?
I’m a fan of the UK series, but didn’t watch the US version. But just want to chime in and say Steve Carell is a d-bag, IMHO. He’s not a movie star. You see one of the so-called Steve Carell vehicles and you know it’s going to flop. Do expect him to carry a film. So sick of his act.
I think you’ve got Steve Carell confused with Seth Rogen.
seems to be a lot of people who have achieved nothing badmouthing steve, oh i’m sure you have a very prestegious blog however..
it is embarassing that the American version of David Brent is so talentless and unfunny by contrast.
The Office is dead. Even its diehard fans are ready for it to die. The planned spin-off with Dwight tanked. Why come back? Smart move, Steve.
Steve was great, it sucks he is declining the finale but he’s happy with the decision and that’s all that matters. I don’t think all of us “diehards” really want the show to end. I will miss it
