Dave Grohl said today at the Sundance Film Festival that he almost put convicted serial killer Charles Manson in his music documentary Sound City, which premiered here over last week. “Manson recorded at Sound City and at one point we considered talking to him about music because how
f***ing insane would that be,” the first-time director and Foo Fighters frontman said Tuesday. “But we decided not to because we didn’t want it to take over the beautiful message of the movie — but we considered it.”
Manson recorded demos in the late 1960s at the famed San Fernando Valley recording studio that’s the subject of Sound City. Found guilty of murdering Sharon Tate and others in 1970, Manson has been in prison ever since and has repeatedly been denied parole. “He was a musician before he got busted. He was friends with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Dennis Wilson said ‘Here, go record some demos, I’ll pay for it, there’s this place called Sound City,” Grohl said this morning during an appearance with Prince Avalanche director David Gordon Green at Sundance’s Cinema Café. A
number of bands have covered Manson’s songs over the years.

As the Sound City documentary shows, Grohl’s former band Nirvana also recorded at the Van Nuys studio, as did Guns’N’Roses, Rick Springfield, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick, Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. A star-studded Sound City concert in Park City followed the film’s premiere Friday. Before the festival, Gravitas Ventures acquired worldwide VOD rights to Sound City.

Perhaps it would have been interesting for Grohl to include Manson. Before it became just a fad to record Charlie’s crap, the Beach Boys recorded and released “Never Learn Not To Love” in 1968. Dennis sang lead. My old pal Terry Melcher produced it. Anyway I’m way above excited for this movie. Capturing history is always great. And it is a fitting tribute to Tom Skeeter and the late Joe Gottfried to their legacy. Sound City was a trip….And Manson was quite likely not the only creep to record there! Manson or not, I’m hyped to see what Dave has done.
As someone who has been friends with Charlie for 25+ years I know what CM would have said to Dave G. (And I will ask him later this week when he calls) But CM would not have talked to Dave G. His music is his soul and he does not like it being used for shock value or to reflect evil back at us! Charlie is a very talented songwriter and singer. So no matter what your opinion of Manson is, he does take his music very serious and holds it close to his heart. So rest assured CM would of had NOTHING to do with this film or Dave G.
Way to shamelessly self-promote the fact that you have a relationship with a convicted felon. Please DO let everyone know what Dave G. says when he calls you this week. Could you also post your lunches for the next couple of weeks? Jesus H. CHRIST
I don’t know what relationship “Bill” actually has with Charlie, but I do agree Manson would prefer to not be a part of anything so obviously contrived were he to be included in this project.
It’s also too bad “Dana” thinks so little of Charlie’s music. Crap? Really? Most of what’s out there now makes Charlie look look like Beethoven for crying out loud.
Blah, blah, blah… they left out pivotal people like Neil Hopper, but considered including Manson? Clowns.
There’s a documentary in existence that chronicles Manson’s “music motive” to the murders and his relationship with Dennis Wilson and Terry Melcher. You can stream it on IMDB, it’s called “Cease to Exist.”

I heard some of Charles Manson’s music and I was shocked at how good his voice and music were. It is sad that this man Manson had such talent and unfortunately I think I read that his music was ripped off and that made him revengeful. Believe the music business is a thievery business and Manson could not control his anger and just get a lawyer. He wanted revenge and went to a bad level. I felt sorry for Manson when I read the bad hand fate dealt him growing up. My God could the average human being survive that. Really I believe if he were raised with a loving mother these murders would never have happened. Unfortunately the White Album always is connected to these murders which is not fair. I mean it was a good album. Very strange and sad!
