EXCLUSIVE: Fruitvale, the Ryan Coogler-directed drama about the last day in the life of 22-year-old Oscar Grant before he was killed in a case that galvanized protests against police brutality in Oakland, is at the center of a multi-distributor auction that will be wrapped up first thing Monday morning at Sundance. I’m hearing that the deal will be worth just north of a $2 million minimum guarantee with commitments for screen commitments and a theatrical release, with P&A. The suitors in the mix at this late hour are led by The Weinstein Company and Fox Searchlight, with Paramount Pictures and Focus Features in the mix.
The feeling from buyers I’ve spoken to who’ve seen it is that Fruitvale has the potential to be one of those festival pictures that come out of nowhere — like Precious and Beasts Of The Southern Wild — to capture audience and critical acclaim. It’s galvanized by the performance of Michael B Jordan, memorable in The Wire, Friday Night Lights and Chronicle. He plays Oscar, a young man who has been in trouble with the law but is decent at heart and tries to
straighten out his life to care for his girlfriend and young daughter. The film unfolds on the final day of 2008 and also stars The Help‘s Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz, Ahna O’Reilly, Kevin Durand and Chad Michael Murray. The film is Coogler’s feature directorial debut, and Forest Whitaker is among the producers. The auction is being handled tonight by WME Global’s Mark Ankner and Liesl Copland.
Stay tuned.

No, this film will not become the next big whathaveyou. No.
did you have a chance to see it? what are your thoughts?
Oh great–another boring movie about child neglect and abuse.
Thank you. Someone understands!
It’s actually not much like those two movies. Yes, there is a white paternalism inherent in Sundance anointing African-American-themed films, and that is worth analyzing, but I think you should see FRUITVALE and judge it on its own terms, because it is significantly different from PRECIOUS and BEASTS. It has humor, healthy, functional, three-dimensional, and relateable relationships between minorities, and is based on REALITY and TRUTH, for starters. PRECIOUS and BEASTS lacked these elements altogether.
Yes. Good call. This is the one.
Wow. Happen to know a few of the actors in this movie so I am super excited to read this!!! I hope it does take off! Ignore the negative energy and keep it pushing you guys!!! Being from Oakland I support positive movement coming from my city!!!
What a load this “film” is. “Fruitvale” attempts to glorify Oscar Grant, who was nothing more than a drug dealer and a gangbanger. This fool started a gang fight on a BART train that terrorized others coming home on New Year’s Day. Had Oscar Grant been home with his daughter that night, like he was supposed to be, he’d be alive today. A sick, depraved film about a sick, depraved family.
Definitely a story that should never be told or made into a film. Disgusting.
Gotta go see it! The director really knows how to tell a story! I see nothing but promise in his future
You are an A Hole. What if this was your son?.. Would you feel the same way. You probably would.. I saw the movie twice in Park City, Utah I felt it was a powerful and truthful movie. No glorifying here..It showed Oscar as being compasionate with others. It doesn’t matter what kind of person Oscar was.. It did’t justify him being kiled like he was.. This could of happen to any young black, young white, young hispanic or young asian man.
