EXCLUSIVE: James Franco, bound for Sundance to promote several projects, has just set another. He will star in and direct Beautiful People, a bio-pic of charismatic playboy and visionary Jay Sebring, the jet-setting hairstylist to the stars in the 1960s, who died violently at the hands of the clan led by Charles Manson. The screenplay, written by Lauren Wild, was brought to Franco by David Bortolucci of Jane and Sheppard Productions, who will be producing with Julie Yorn of LBI Entertainment. Franco will also produce, along with his RabbitBandini Productions partners Miles Levy and Vince Jolivette.
The film charts the rise of Sebring as a self-created men’s grooming pioneer, as he climbed the social ladder in Hollywood during the 60s. There is also a focus on his romantic relationship with the beautiful young actress Sharon Tate. Both Tate and Sebring were victims of the notorious murder spree of the cult led by Manson.
Franco hits Park City for Interior. Leather Bar, which he co-directed, the fetish docu Kink he produced, and Lovelace (in which he costars). The actor, who’ll next be seen in Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great And Powerful and Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, continues to be impossible to typecast. But he’s a spitting image of the tress-master Sebring. Franco recently directed film adaptations of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and Cormac McCarthy’s Child Of God. He is repped by CAA, James Levy Management and attorney Warren Dern. Paradigm reps Wild.

Wow, it’s about time! I know I never forgot about him! He was the first Paul Mitchell or the first John Frieda. I don’t know if his products are still out there to purchase, are they? What ever happened to his gold-mine? Sad so sad the fate that was dealt to him. But, James Franco you do look very much like him, good job! I’ll be waiting for this movie!
this looks quite interesting! Kudos to Franco for choosing lately very good material.
Can’t wait for this movie. I have read many books about this case. James Franco does look a lot like Jay Sebring. I’m sure he will do an awesome job playing him. He also played James Dean in a movie called James Dean in 2001. He did a great job.
Sounds cool, like a “Shampoo” for real. I had occasion to go to the Tate house on Cielo when I was in the ICM mailroom delivering papers to Rudy Altobelli and the memory of what had happened there was palpably haunting. It could be an interesting journey to find out what brought Jay to that place on that night.
I do hope it ends without having to focus on the tragedy. There is so much more to both of them, and their love story, without having to relive their untimely deaths.
Well said!!!
Well if it has to come to getting the screenplay in to the hands of more notable players in Hollywood like Franco, then that’s not bad. But he has played in a few biopics that I find it distracting. It takes away from the focus of the film when common name actors are shoeing in for these roles. But, I could be wrong and taken for a ride by James Franco in his portrayal. It’s nice to see that the writer has made it a point to focus on the world of Jay Sebring as opposed to the last few minutes of his life. This was a man that really built himself up from scratch (very inspiring).
Well this great news, a story of the 1st hair stylist to make a it in his own right, i’m a Sharon Tate fan and welcome this movie whole heartedley about the love story between them and how he remained friends with both Sharon and Roman. Jay had a lot of celebrity lients including Elvis, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Peter and Henry Fonda, Warren Beatty and the list goes on. i’ll be waiting for this movie to come out and James Francodoes look like Jay xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
His life story really seems the diamond in the rough. Throughout time, it’s always the entertainers and their vanity. As much as we love our American celebrated entertainers, there is a gold-mine of stories of the many players in the back ground. Jay Sebring seemed to convey that. I’ve been hearing a lot of Sharon Tate fans vying for Rose Byrne to portray her. They do strongly resemble each other. Either way, I look forward to this!
