Modern Family is such a hit for ABC that entertainment president Paul Lee just referred to it as simply “Modern” during a
morning TCA panel. Everyone on the planet would know what show he meant.
But if ratings are any indication, the TV viewership is not on such a first-name basis with another ABC Wednesday night comedy, The Middle. At today’s late afternoon panel on the show, executive producers DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler joked that they were going to go to a bar and have a drink for every time a TV critic calls the show “underrated.”

Still, the producers and cast members who attended the panel (Eden Sher, Atticus Shaffer, Neil Flynn and Patricia Heaton), said they are pretty satisfied with the show’s 8 PM time slot and the loyal fan base that finds it there. Heisler and Heline say that the “underrated” references feel like awards for the show.

“Slow and steady wins the race, “ said actor Flynn. “Before you know it we’ll have done 120 episodes before anyone says that show doesn’t deserve to have 120 episodes. It’s better to be underrated.”
The cast and producers were asked if they thought The Middle would do better in a later time slot with Modern Family as a lead-in (instead of, as cast and crew jokingly pointed out, the show’s current lead in, Wheel Of Fortune). But the producers called the time slot a “vote of confidence” from ABC.

Heisler said she is proud that the show has met the challenge of providing “ funny, subversive sophisticated humor that everybody can watch.”
Added Heline of the 8 PM slot: “If I were at the network, I’d make the same decision.”

The Middle is one of my favorite shows…always delivers laughs and the character of Sue Heck is one of the best in comedy TV these days.
yeah she really should be getting some more attention esp in best supporting categories – shes great in her role…when i first saw the actress on a talk show i was stunneda t the transformation
One of the best comedies on tv and don’t worry guys, you’re way better than Modern Family. It’s been that way for years now.
A wonderfully, hilarious family comedy!
The Middle was a surprisingly great show–not much of a fan of family comedies–and I still watch it, but the last season seems to not being keeping pace with the previous ones. Perhaps I’m missing Frankie’s adventures at her former job at the auto dealership or that Brick has grown up into puberty and isn’t as adorable as he used to be. Who knows, still a great show, but its greatness if shaky and if they don’t up the effort that greatness might become average. Of course, Chuck Lorre has made a billion dollars producing incredibly popular and absurdly average comedies so what do I know?
Yeah Ive tried to watch his CBS comedies and given them a few chances and not only do I not find them funny, but I find them stupid, and just a place to zing out double entendres. Id put The MIddle up next to 2.5men, MikeMolly, 2Broke, Big Bang etc. I cant even sunderstand how something like Big Bang gets nearly 20 million (or NCIS yet anothe CBS procedural..yawn)…I watched Big Bang tonght – the second time ever — and I just didnt see anything funny…or original…same with 2.5 men where it was probably the fifth episode in 10 years I had seen…None make me want to watch again and I think THE MIDDLE is far superior but maybe we just dont know what the middle of the country wants to watch
The Middle is the most consistently funny show on TV and light years better than Modern Family in seasons 2 through 4. One of these days, the awards shows are going to recognize this gem (and may even recognize the drama gem, Parenthood, too).
It is really strange that the show doesn’t attract more critical attention, esp for the cast which is uniformly good. But like other non-Emmy darlings before it–King of Queens, anyone?–it’ll likely last a good while with those of us who are watching laughing all the way.
Last nights episode of The Middle was hilarious. I loved Sue and Axel sharing a class.
Truly deserves more eyeballs and recognition. Not only is the show funny but it has tremendous heart. It’s one Heck of a show !!
The Middle and Raising Hope both demand some serious network support, magazine covers and well deserved Emmy love.
Theyneed to do a better job promoting this show or putting it and Modern together without the silly show Neighbors that I cant believe anyone watches. I LOVE THE MIDDLE and it keeps getting better; some of the last episodes of Modern didnt really make me laugh – they just seemed like retread storylines weve seen before
The show doesn’t do better since Heaton gets out there every now and then with her conservative views and alienates many of her viewers.
You mean as opposed to seemingly 90% of actors that are touting a liberal agenda? What a pathetic comment.
I’m just impressed that the show survived its first season, when its lead-in was the horribly-rated (and just plain horrible) “Hank.”
Very underrated show and a perfect example of a show trying to capture the beauty of the heartland and its values. The fact its not trying to be cool or hip is even better. The time slot of 8pm is perfect as the show is good for families to watch at that hour, plus it has 8pm sensibilities.
Eden Sher should have be nominated for an emmy every year. She is by far the funniest woman on television. Long live Sue Heck!
It would be fascinating to see how it would do IF ABC ever sampled a new episode at 9:30. I bet it would do better than any other show they’ve put behind MODERN in all four years.
We have watched The Middle since the beginning — and have NEVER watched Modern Family! MF is not our kind of show, and we simply don’t find it funny! The Heck family is a bit OTT to say the least, but we can identify with a LOT of the shenanigans! LOL! Mom Heck is getting a little much lately, although I like Patricia Heaton, and sometimes I was to shake Dad Heck, but he DOES care about his family! The kids are hilarious! Just watched Eden Sher on The View and it’s amazing how she can transform into a ‘
normal’ person! LOL!
