Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
It’s official. Greg Daniels, executive producer and showrunner of The Office, said at today’s TCA that Steve Carell
would not make a re-appearance in the last season or the final episode of the show’s nine-season run. Daniels said that Carell “was very much of the opinion that the ‘Goodbye Michael’ episode and story arc leading up to it was the goodbye to the fans and the show”. This final season, the producer said, “is the goodbye that the rest of the show gets to have.”
Daniels said viewers should not expect every detail of 9 seasons to be wrapped up in the final episode, which does not yet have a completed script and is still at the table-read stage. He said next week’s episode is “the beginning of the end” of the 24-episode season. Daniels would not reveal any plot spoilers but said that one character is fired in Episode 15.
He added that the finale will be one hour and some series regulars and guest stars may return, including Mindy Kaling.
During the panel, cast member Rainn Wilson reminisced about the years of coming to work on the set where today’s session was held — located in a modest warehouse district in Panorama City. He said at the beginning of production the actors sat around at lunch wondering what it would be like if the show got picked up for even a second season. “It’s so weird, 9 years later, to have that lunch coming true,” Wilson said.
Wilson called the cast a family that had “grown up together” and even “fought a little bit, not like [the cast of] Grey’s Anatomy.” What the actor says he’ll miss most is the innocence of the “kids” who are now “giant megalomaniac TV stars”.
Daniels said the decision to end the show after 9 seasons “was made by pretty much everybody who is a producer now, which includes a lot of the main cast.” He said many contracts were up in Season 8 so there were discussions about going on for one more season. Daniels said the desire for all was to be able to tie up story lines for a satisfying Season 9 ending. “But we were still doing very well for NBC, I think they’d probably have us back for another year,” he said.
(After the panel, Daniels confirmed to Deadline that he had received no push of any kind from NBC to end the show. “I don’t understand the economics of TV at all”, he said, but added that the show’s position as a part of NBC’s Thursday night comedy block and its strong viewership on DVR leads him to predict NBC would have been happy to keep the show on the air).
Daniels said it’s nice to be able to plan the end of the show because it gives writers a chance to tie up loose ends on story lines that have been part of the show since the beginning. “You couldn’t do if you just kept on going and going until you got canceled,” he said.
Daniels said he chose to return to the show as showrunner because “I couldn’t imagine a scenario where I wouldn’t be directing what was happening at the end,” adding: “That happened to me on King Of The Hill.” He called his connection with The Office “more emotional than any other show I’ve ever had.”

All I ask is that Ben Franklin be included in the finale. Perhaps in a duel with Dwight, who finally snaps and starts dressing up as Otto von Bismarck.
The show died creatively when Michael Scott left the company. It should have ended with that episode. Season 8 was horrible and season 9 is just as bad. Steve Carell was smart to leave after his 7th season he knew when to get out. Everybody else has just been putting in their time to make some extra money. The show lost all its energy when Carell left.
B.S. I’m a true fan who has enjoyed every single season. Each new character they introduce brings something special and funny to the show. They’ve been especially great at incorporating major stars like James Spader and Kathy Bates into the cast, and British star Catherine Bates (Nellie Bertram) started off a bit clunky but she’s turned out to be hilarious.
I couldn’t stand season 8 either, but I think (with the exception of “Here comes treble”) this season has been fantastic. It’s been a pleasant surprise.
Are you kidding? Last week’s episode was so God-awful bad that I had to question if any of the writers or actors actually thought think they’re being creative and funny or do they just sit around lunch talking about their multi-million dollar deals and making fun of fans for being suckers. The show stinks and has too many characters to juggle, including all the new ones who bring nothing to the table. The Office is the example of why shows need to end when they are on top creatively. If I wasn’t too lazy to remove it from my DVR, it’d already be out of my life. If only I didn’t like train wrecks so much.
Can I check “like” about 1,000 times. Completely and absolutely horrible. The show turned from a comedy to a crappy love story with the 2 non funniest characters on the show. Jim and Pam. Loved the first 7 seasons, embarrassing to watch now unless Dwight or Andy are the main part of the story that week. Not Jim and Pam’s babysitting problems or whatever crappy storyline they come up with.
*Catherine Tate
I agree with the “Michael Scott” poster above. The show died when Carrel left. Season 8 was all over the shop with a little bit of spark coming through mid-season but not enough momentum to sustain it. This year it’s just grasping. Trying to be what it once was with the heart of the show missing (Carrel).
I’m glad they’re wrapping up in 12 more episodes and that the stories will have a chance to conclude. At least long time fans will be able to have some satisfaction with that aspect.
Amen!
Who cares how you do it, just end already.
The Office is still enjoyable. It will be sad to see it end.
Agree. I personally think season 8 was overall a bit lame, but it has definitely picked up speed again in season 9. The Office is one of the best comedy series around for sure.
FACT: the show actually died creatively and has been all down hill since they ran out of brit scripts.
Troll harder
A True Fan would get Catherine Tate’s name right
I refused to watch after Steve C. left. However….I watch the early seasons over & over on ROKU. It’s a great show that totally surpassed the original British version by miles. For me, the only cast that came close to the “muy simpatico” of “The Office” was the cast of “News Radio” years ago. (Which I also view again & again.) What makes both shows so funny is the fact that there are tons of real people in the work place exactly like the ones in these shows.
I agree with you about the fact that what makes The Office such a brilliant show is how real it is. There are so many dynamics in the show that are missed when you just watch as a casual viewer. I am amazed that Hollywood writers know how offices work.
I also agree the show has struggled lately. Comparing the show today versus years ago is part of the problem. Compare the show today versus any other comedy on NBC, and it is still one of the best shows on TV.
This season has been much better than past, though I agree there are too many characters and I really have struggled with Catherine Tate being on the show, she is terrible.
A gigantic “who cares” rose from the audience.
The show definitely lost a lot of it’s mojo when Steve left, but I wouldn’t say it died entirely. I found Jo and Robert California pretty entertaining and Andy was kind of funny at first…Even before Steve left, Jim/Pam/Dwight were only a small part of the show for me. Lesser characters like Darryl, Packer, Kelly, Stanley, Angela and especially Creed were the real jewels. When Andy became the boss and stopped being the Nard Dog, he became much less interesting.
Still, the show’s definitely gone down since Steve left and the worst episode in the series’ history has to be ‘Work Bus’. However, but actually revealing the fact that Michael Scott won’t be appearing again, I think that a lot of people have lost interest in the remaining episodes of this season based on that alone. Even if we got a call from Michael giving an update on himself and Holly, that would make it sort of worth it. But I for one am significantly less interested in the final episode now, so much that I wish I didn’t know that MS wasn’t going to appear.
Honestly, I think it should have ended with the wedding of Pam & Jim… that was the arc most people cared about. Second best would have been the departure of Michael. I made it through about half of season 8 before I couldn’t take anymore… the rest of the cast trying desperately to mine humor from the hole left by Steve Carell.
I remember when the show was about an office that sold paper…
And to all these posts I just simply state: Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica
The show has turned more into a drama than a comedy. The comedy appeal left when Steve left, but I still enjoy the show and will forever be a fan
I agree that Season 8 was a flop. I have enjoyed certain shows in the 9th season. But not having Michael come back has made me question my decision to even watch any of the new shows. There has yet to be a character that has come close to entertaining me like Michael Scott. Maybe the show should have ended with the 7th Season. There is going to have to be some outstanding writing to satisfy this Office fan.
