The CW today got on the pilot board with its first orders, a Selection redo and Taylor Hackford’s Company Town. They join The Originals, the planted Vampire Diaries spinoff, which will air as an episode of the hit drama in April.
The CW brass has been high on the concept for the Hunger Games-esque The Selection since the project was pitched in 2011. The network first ordered a pilot for the adaptation of the book by Kiera Cass last year. The project, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, didn’t make the cut to series, but the network kept it in redevelopment, ordering a new script from Craft and Fain. CW president Mark Pedowitz recently said that the network is quite happy with the duo’s new treatment, which is now getting a pilot green light. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is described as an epic romance centering on a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love, and kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. Warner Bros. TV is producing.
Written by Sera Gamble and to be directed by Taylor Hackford, Company Town chronicles the aftermath of a scandal at a Naval base in Virginia, which touches the lives of both civilians and military personnel in the area. The multigenerational, multi-class, family and relationship series centers around two early 20-something women who grew up together, were once best friends, but now are on opposite sides of the Townie/Military divide. Gamble and Hackford executive produce with Bill Haber for CBS TV Studios. For a full list of the broadcast networks’ pilots, click here.

TVD spinoff is in April, not March?
PERSONALLY I’M SICK OF ALL THE VIOLENCE…. can’t they make a show that doesn’t involve weapons, killing, torture, etc.
Agreed. Everything seems v. macho. Presumably the result of G. Arrow’s success but the CW feels very Comicon now.
The Gossip, 9-0 etc lineup was quite femme admittedly but I think they’re overcorrecting. Dudes play video games. It’s the ladies who love the CW.
My only comment for The Cw — please get rid of that terrible SNOT GREEN that is your signature colour. It’s juvenile without being fresh. If the logo was black. Or maybe it alternated colors like in the opening credits of Girls…that would be appealing. Obviously I have too much time on my hands to be debating such matters. But as an ad exec it irks everytime I see it…..
“Company Town” sounds rather interesting and could be what the network really needs. “The Selection” I’m scared will be become the next in the CW long strand of attempts at creating another supernatural show, just to cancel it after 22 episodes.
Company Town sounds gives me a Hatfields and McCoy feel.
^erace ‘sounds’ from the post.
The Selection isn’t a supernatural show
Company Town sounds very interesting. They need a strong show to air before The Carrie Diaries cause that’s a really good teen show.
Company ToWn looks interesting
Both of these shows sound good to me. I hope they get picked up. I am especially excited about The Selection. I was disappointed that The CW didn’t pick it up for this season, so I hope they don’t disappoint me again.
You should be thanking them — they tried to make it better.
Whether they did or not remains to be seen.
Very excited to see what The Selection looks like in its second incarnation. I think it bodes well that CW realized the first version didn’t sing and instead of tossing the idea completely, decided to rework it.
Fingers crossed for some solid teen dystopia in the fall.
If they add a Finnick Odair type big hunky blonde character to The Selection I’m in !
Company Town sounds interesting for sure. We’ll have to wait and see of course but it really could be something.
The CW has quite a lot of dystopian dramas in the oven. Why not? When True Blood and Twilight hit, The CW finally realized the ‘rich white girls’-type of shows were over and they had huge success with The Vampire Diaries. With Hunger Games being a hit and dystopia being the new ‘it’ thing in young adult literature it seems like they could have something with The Selection. Although. The Hundred sounds fine too.
I hope it works out , however I can’t figure why they changed the name of it ? Company Town from Norfolk is a big leap and has a ring of cougar in it , think anything would have been better than Company Town . Port Town , Harbor View or can you say ” Chess a Peak ” as in Chesapeake ? Lame ? Well explain the reason for the name Company Town based on the setting and story for the pilot please.
But dystopian dramas are already over…. CW is supposed to be young …. When when will they get AHEAD of the curve. Call me crazy but I see more Potential at the CW than at other networks because they are young loose footloose and fancy free….
If anyone can explain why they changed the name to Company Town , please enlighten me . Guessing because the term company refers here to the military , but I don’t see people relating it , of course till they watch it.
