BREAKING: Tom Hardy is in talks to star in Child 44, the adaptation of the Tom Rob Smith novel that will be directed by Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa for Scott Free. Hardy, who wrapped Mad Max: Fury Road for director George Miller, will star in Child 44 after he completes Animal Rescue, the Fox Searchlight drama that Michael R. Roskam is directing, with Noomi Rapace his co-star. He will shoot Animal Rescue in March, then move right on to Child 44.
Child 44 takes place in Stalin’s Soviet Union, and Hardy plays a security officer and war hero who believes in the Soviet system and the law. That is until he uncovers the existence of a mass murderer, and he is thwarted by that system he has sworn to serve because they have no interest in acknowledging that murders are taking place in a country perpetuating the myth of a crime-free utopia. The book is part of a trilogy.
Hardy, who last starred in The Dark Knight Rises, is repped by CAA.

Glad Pattinson won’t be apart of this! Hardy is a true actor.
There is a God, after all. I agree, Tom Hardy is a real/true actor. I’d heard R. Pattison’s, name thrown around for this role. He is sub-standard at best.
Hey, studio heads…. Rob Pattison will forever be Edward Cullen. He will not be accepted ever, as a leading man. He will not put “butts in seats.” His Twilight fan base WILL NOT follow him, which is what you’re counting $$$, on. Never gonna happen. It doesn’t take Albert Einstein, to figure that out.
I have nothing against him, other than he cannot act, period.
So it’s a rip-off of the 90′s HBO movie “Citizen X” with Steven Rea and Donald Sutherland, which was itself based on another book about the exact same premise. Okay.
One serial killer in 1950s Wisconsin inspired Pyscho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs. I think the Andrei Chikatilo case is interesting enough to warrant different interpretations, especially since this one fictionalizes the events and sets them thirty years earlier than Citizen X does.
You know what? Fair enough, I stand corrected. Good point.
It’s a great book and he’ll be terrific in it. I’m glad this is finally getting off the ground. There’s a scary, mesmerizing potential set piece involving an escape from a train, if they follow what’s in the book.
I am so glad Tom Hardy us going to play Leo. He is going to be great. Love.the books.
“Child 44″, eh? I’ll wager after “Movie 43″ a name change is in order.
it’s funny, becouse oficers who service in Soviet national security dont lie your self, they know what realy happen. But they remained true ideologies.
Child 44. This book is a MUST READ. Even if you are not an avid reader you will LOVE this book. You can not put it down… sooo scary. So well writen. Tom Rob Smith is a genius. What it was like to live there! Horrible; living in fear of the State… ALWAYS. The State was killing so many of its own people, the population was declining.
