In the second week of its 12th season, American Idol (5.4/15) last night saw Nicki Minaj storm off after a squabble with fellow judge Mariah Carey as the show took in auditions in Charlotte, NC. Although watched by 16 million viewers and dominating in all demos, the two-hour episode was down 10% from last week’s premiere. It also was down 16% from Season 11’s second-week Wednesday show a year ago. Still, the rating was better than the 29% year-over-year decline Idol’s second-week Wednesday suffered last season compared with Season 10.
A Criminal Minds (1.5/4) repeat started Wednesday night on CBS followed by a new Criminal Minds (3.0/8) at 9 PM, which was up 3% from last week’s winter break return. Taking its 10 PM time slot, CSI (2.7/7) rose 17% from last week for a season high among adults 18-49. The procedural was the second-most-watched show of the night, pulling in an audience of 11.49 million. An NBA game caused preemption in San Antonio for CBS, so the adjustment for final numbers later today could be greater than usual. Fox won the night in total viewers and the 18-49 demo.
It was a mixed bag on ABC. The Middle (2.5/7) was up 9% from last week and The Neighbors (1.9/5) perked up 6%. Modern Family (4.1/11) slipped 5% from its January 16 show, a season low for the comedy. Suburgatory (2.3/6), meanwhile, was flat with last week’s show. Country drama Nashville (1.8/5) hit a bad note last night: Losing the time slot to CSI, the show fell 18% from last week’s 2.2/6 rating.
NBC was all encores with Whitney (0.8/2), Guys With Kids (0.8/2), Law & Order: SVU (0/7/2) and Chicago Fire (0.8/2). The CW had new episodes of Arrow (1.1./3) and Supernatural (0.9/2 ).

Strong night for CBS and FOX. NBC has nothing on this night. New episodes of their crap wouldn’t have done much better than the repeats with the exception of the 10pm hour. The selfcutters over at ABC continue to mutilate The Middle and Modern Family with all the surrounding garbage- The Neighbors, Suburgatory, and Nashville. The Middle and Modern Family continue to demonstrate amazing strength in the midst of all that weakness; weak characters, unlikable characters, weak stories, unfunny stories in their anticomedies and uninteresting stories in their sole drama. ABC’s surrounding shows are so bad it only takes five minutes of watching to motivate you to change the channel.
Odd, I’m pretty sure Modern Family hit an all time season low every ep. . ..
Live the Middle and modern family.. Wish they were back to back… so since ABC doesn’t do that, my DVR does … and commercial free
Wish more people were watching Nashville. Last night’s episode was amazing. The songs, writing, and acting just get better and better. ABC needs to move it to a stronger night. Sunday after Revenge. Pronto!
actually, that’s a really good idea
when I first strange dreading this post I thought to myself that maybe Nashville is just one of those shows that will never stick – and I happen to like it. sometimes you can’t get people to watch a show, no matter what you do, once they’ve decided they don’t want to.
moving it behind Revenge makes perfect sense, though, because they’ve got a similar tone – to me, anyway – and I have to think they’d appeal to the same kind of viewer. And ABC has an obvious problem on its hands there, w. OPan Am last year and now 666 Park Avenue this year.
I don’t know that they’ll do that, though. Sometimes the obvious route isn’t the one network execs take. And, by moving Nashville off Weds., ABC has another problem – what to do about Weds. at 10.
Modern Family’s latest problem is focusing too much storyline on the bratty over-paid child actors who play the kids. They are fine in doses, but I don’t need to see them taking up half the story lines in every episode. That’s when I tune out. More Ed O’Neil please, less kids.
Agree. Lilly is just horrible and annoying.
Ever since they aged LILY she has become with worst sitcom kid EVER. I would even go as far as to say she single handily ruined the show with her mere introduction.
Ratings for the Nikki minaj show are down because of Nikki minaj! I want to hear what the other judges think, she is so annoying and self centered
I havent watched AI in years but just turned it on to see the new judges. Nikki needs to realize she hasnt been out that long and you are right….all i heard was her talking. She was acting like Simon as in the main judge. It was wierd cause the girl hasnt done what Mariah has done which is be out for years.
I completely agree with the above comments regarding American Idol. Nicki Minaj is ruining the show, she doesn’t let anybody else speak, and she is so rude as well as extremely trashy. I won’t be watching American Idol Season 12 anymore unless Nicki Minaj gets fired.
Nikki minaj and Nikki minaj are the worse judges ever will not watch until they are gone.
American Idol losses something each week. Let it be about the singing, not the Judges.
I agree w/all Niki Minaj comments above. There’s so much focus on her it hurts the contestants. She’ll also over praise a contestant so much calling them a star, etc. This was in the beginning & the only show we watched. I thought if she tells them that then they get their hopes up & later don’t make it cause Niki has on her different personality they’ll be devastated. She’s always flipping around her hair or wig, talking over the other judges. The other judges couldn’t even finish their comments. She acted like she’s a 5 year old at times. They didn’t need her, would’ve done great with the other 3 judges only. My daughter who’s 35 washed AI faithfully for 11 seasons. We watched one episode with Niki, that was it. Until Niki gone we won’t watch again.
