It was a night of a lot of not-so-new chess pieces put in place on television Tuesday. With ABC and Fox having pulled shows from their schedule last week, last night saw their replacements debut. In its first week as a one-hour, The Taste (1.6/4) had a hard second week. The cooking competition show fell 24% from its two-hour premiere January 22. With Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt. 23 pulled from the schedule last week, ABC began the first week of its double shot of Happy Endings on Tuesday. The 9 PM (1.2/3) regular time slot broadcast dipped 8% from Happy Endings’ last original show on January 15. The replacement 9:30 PM (1.3/3) airing of Happy Endings was up from Apt. 23’s 1.1/3 of two weeks ago. Now that Private Practice is no more, ABC ended the night with a special primetime repeat of Jimmy Kimmel Live (1.2/3) from January 24 when the show was “hijacked” by Matt Damon. The indefinite pulling of Ben And Kate from Fox’s Tuesday comedy block last week meant that last night began with the first of several back-to-back episodes of Raising Hope. The 8 PM (1.7/5) was even with last week’s show but the 8:30 PM (1.5/4) replacement airing rose 25% from last week’s Ben And Kate in the same time slot. That wasn’t the only rise Fox saw on Tuesday. New Girl (2.5/7) was up 14% from last week and The Mindy Project (1.7/4) saw a rise of 13% from January 22.
NBC started the night as usual with back-to-back episodes of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. The 8 PM (1.4/4) airing of the hidden camera series was down 13% for a season low. The 8:30 PM (1.5/4) broadcast of Off Their Rockers was also down, 17% from last week. After hitting a series low last week, Go On (1.2/3) slide another 8% from January 22. That’s a new series low for the freshman comedy. Also coming off a series low from its January 22 show, The New Normal (1.1/3) was also down 8% from last week. That’s also a new series low for the Ryan Murphy produced comedy. NBC wrapped up the night with a special Dateline (1.3/4).
Over on CBS, NCIS (3.7/10) slipped 5% from its last original on January 15 but still pulled in its second biggest audience of the season with 21.83 million viewers. On the other hand, the spin-off NCIS: LA (3.1/8) was up 15% from its last original two weeks ago. That was tied with the procedural’s second best result among Adults 18-49 since its October 2, 2012 show, which was the second episode of the season. Topping its time slot like NCIS and NCIS: LA did, freshman Vegas (1.95/) jumped up 19% from its January 15 show. CBS won the night in terms of viewers and among Adults 18-49. The CW had new episodes of Hart Of Dixie (0.5/2) and Emily Owens M.D. (0.4/1) last night. The former was down a tenth from last week while the latter was even with its January 22 show.

I have to wonder how long the net will hold onto The New Normal. The show only has appeal to a chic urban crowd and they’re not watching. Meanwhile if any anyone produced a rip-off of the old WB Network’s Seventh Heaven, they would have a hit on their hands. But that’s the Big Three, they just keep giving the people what they don’t want.
So the 9:30pm episode of “Happy Endings” gets better ratings than the 9pm episode? Of course, because it courts the same demo as “New Girl”! Why the fuck are these shows facing off against each other!? It’s hurting both shows.
Agreed. They’re killing each other, as they are very similar shows that appeal to the exact same audience. Ridiculous, ridiculous scheduling.
Agreed. Please, ABC, don’t cancel Happy Endings. I am still licking my wounds, because Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt. 23 was terminated. Last night episodes of Happy Endings were remarkable and well-acted. This ensemble cast is unbelievably underrated. Their comedic timing and their chemistry are always spot on. I am completely addicted to them, and I expect Adam Pally to have a major film breakthrough in the next few years. That lovable dude is a keeper.
NBC should get rid of every new comedy from this season. All are dreadful and have no potential to grow. Go on and New Normal can’t even hold 18-49 from a 90 year old woman. These two shows plus Guys with kids and the totally unfunny 1600 Penn need to go, anything would be better. They can’t do any worse. They have 18 pilots to choose from. Find seven or eight new shows from this batch and get rid of these horrible shows.
Amen, brother.
NBC should keep their multi cams. Whitney has gotten better and guys with kids is fun to watch. It’s really funny, like a sitcom should be. Guys with kids tells jokes. It’s not just quirky and weird like most single cameras.
Before you say a show is bad, you should watch it. Don’t base your opinion on three guys wearing baby bijorns in a bar. The show has moved past that.
You’re right about what sitcoms should be. Jokes! What a concept. You mean a fat kid roaming the White House making a few comments under his breath that only a 15 year old would find amusing isn’t the gold standard? I’m all for multi cams and will give Guys with kids another chance.
I’ll give Guys with Kids another chance as well.
You are all insane. Go On can’t hold the ratings because people stop watching Betty White midway through. Whitney and Guys with Kids are both unspeakably horrible. The only bad single cam is The New Normal.
Plus, they signed up for 22 episodes of Michael J Fox’s new show. Their going to build shows around that. They are going to build it around work coms and single cam dom coms. Maybe a couple multi cams (perhaps Happiness or The John Mulaney Show).
Also, if you want to cancel Parks and Rec, you must truly be an awful human being.
They gave Matthew Perry’s single-cam comeback 22 episodes, and that hasn’t worked out so well. At some point they do need to change what they’re doing. Getting back to multi-cam would be one way.
Also, Guys With Kids isn’t unspeakably horrible, though it’s not really good enough. It’s about as well written as Go On, but single-cam-no-laugh-track shows always get better reviews (because a bad joke with an audience reaction sticks out more, I think; we resent it). They probably need to just clean house, though, except for Parks & Recreation, which gets better ratings than the other single-cams.
Wait what about the hilarious GUYS WITH…snicker…chuckle… guffaw… LAUGH. I can’t even finish this…
I didn’t think any sitcom could be worse than 2.5 Men and Big Bang Theory and then Guys with Kids came along. It’s even more putrid than Whitney. You have some seriously bad taste, my friend.
Since the show you bashed – Big Bang Theory – is television’s most watched comedy series, I will say that you know noting about comedy. This may be the reason why your comedy spec scripts are being rejected.
have to agree with christian on this one. yes, big bang is the most watched comedy series, but that means its funny? its not funny. its lazy writing, just like two and half men and whitney and guys with kids. these are not well-written shows. there was a time when full house was a huge hit. so that means full house was funny? popularity and quality are not necessarily (and often aren’t) related.
Yes CBS and Warner bros should be embarrassed
By their billion dollar shows. Big Bang is the number one show in the country.
Blows away single cam modern family in audience and revenue.
Multiple cams make money.
My theory is that happy endings was originally renewed only to block new girl from getting d wayans jr and whatever other pilot from getting pally.
If New Girl and Happy Endings were on the same network they would be a force to reckon with, but they do both erode each others viewership. Hope neither gets cancelled.
Mathew Perry’s Go On was going to lead Nbc to the promised land-yeah right! Not a good show & neither is The New Normal. Still have no idea whatsoever WHY so many brainwashed-er-I mean normal people continue watching NCIS. Its’ appeal is a fuckin’ mystery to me. Is the CW still around! There’s another mystery. Will that “network” ever grow up? On a deadline post last week, someone mentioned that the average age of a CW viewer was about 41.2. That may be true, but, it seems almost all of their programs are WITH young people. They should try something that doesn’t involve teens/young people. Apart from Arrow & perhaps Vampire Diaries-what does this so-called network really have to offer?
It’s time for NBC to finally put all these horrible comedies and that includes Betty White’s show, right out to pasture as they’re sinking quicker than quicksand. The rise in ratings for the FOX shows are just temporary as once new episodes air on CBS of their respective shows, watch how fast the comedies fall and the CW is just hopeless right now.
the cw had great shows but they need to advertise them more. lovers of shows like the Gilmore girls would love hart of Dixie but many people have never heard of the show to begin with. same with Emily Owens m.d. most people I know don’t even know the cw exists.
Networks move shows around so much that the average viewer can’t find their favorite shows. What night and time is The Mindy Project?
I really, really hope, there will be more New Girl! I can’t live without that show!!!
