In the first clip from Oprah’s Next Chapter interview with the athlete, he answers simply “yes” to her questions about his use of different performance-enhancing substances and touches on his history, specifically when he began using banned substances:
In the clip that follows, Winfrey points out that for 13 years Armstrong “brazenly and defiantly denied everything you just admitted to … why now admit it”? Armstrong says “I don’t know that I have a great answer … I will start my answer by saying this is too late.”
You can watch Part 2 of the interview Friday at 9 PM on OWN. It will also be streamed simultaneously worldwide on Oprah.com.

He is a sociopath. Watching him on TV really helps me understand how to deal with and spot the many sociopathic actors, standup comics, more actors, in this industry. Thanks Lance.
He won the Tour de France 7 times. While doping and while pretty much everyone else was as well. He is still an amazing athlete. And he is obviously not a scoiopath
How is he an amazing athlete if he was only able to achieve what he did by continuously using banned substances?
Lance gave many people hope for many many years people who were inspired by his victories and hard, people that went on to achieve wonderful things in their lives without doping. The lie that he lived still inspired and that can not be taken away. Everyone in the sport is doping and has been doping. If you take away his titles then everyone who’s ever won the Tour de France in the past 30 years must relinquish their title or titles as well.
Unfortunately it’s so deeply ingrained in the culture of highly competitive sports. Had he stopped racing there would have not been any samples for them to compare from previous years and we would not be having this conversation. So before all of you get on your high moral horse stop focusing on his lie but on the positive effects his lies have had on so many that will continue to live their lives cleanly with integrity which I hope he learns to do as well.
I said the same exact thing. He is a total sociopath.
Every time he spoke I felt the need to take a shower.
Don’t hate the player, hate the game
Never bet against Oprah. She is dominating the mainstream media with this story.
This guy gets away with lying for 7 years. Shouldn’t we be celebrating the people that caught him in the end? Those has to be some pretty persistent prosecutors to be able to go against Armstrong/Nike/the whole sport.
Perhaps those prosecutors can be persuaded to look into the banking industry next, for a challenge 10 times greater.
Wouldn’t that make history! And a blockbuster story.
I can’t believe he was smirking and casually saying “yes” like this was no biggie. He doesn’t seem ashamed or sorry in the slightest. I’m surprised he didn’t say “You know what, Oprah? I’d do it again if I had to.”
Well I guess I have to take my words back. Did not believe it until I heard it from his own mouth… Even now I watch him saying it and it’s hard to believe. And he says it with so ease. Like I can’t even hate him after this interview. And he didn’t even use the: “Oh poor me. I had to. It’s not ma fault” card.
He straitly admit that he was jerk, was lying, was controlling and didn’t cry of self pity like they all do. He did not look like a controlling jerk in this interview. This was probably the most honest way that he ever acted. Like all those criminals – at the end they are so tired to lie and hide that they want to be caught and tell the truth. I feel like Lance was very relieved to confess and don’t lie anymore.
They should just ban cycling from existence. Everyone is doping because it’s impossibly to win those 3 weeks races like Tour de France. I was fan of cycling. Was fan of Lance, because racer from my country was on Discovery Channel team with Lance and then Astana and RadioSchack. I was rooting for them. Now I’m tired. You watch race, like some cyclists, root for them…. and then 3 years after they tell you that they were doping and it’s not counting. What is the point of watching cycling now?
After great and legendary Lance confessed (after years of lying and denying) – does anybody really believe that that footballer Manti Te’o was really a poor and stupid innocent victim of a hoax? Please…. He knew, he cheated and lied to gain public sympathy and he should be fired and banned from sports too. No professional team should sign contract with him. And if they do them supporters of team should boo him every second he will be on field. He made fool of them.
I hope he loses everything. Remember, he ruthlessly went after those who made accusations against him. He destroyed their reputations and caused them to spend hundreds of thousands (or more) to defend themselves.
He is going to lose his fortune over this believe that.
I hope all the sponsors who paid him over the years for his seven wins and squeaky clean image sue him into the poorhouse for fraud. Trying now to resuscitate his image/name after so many years of lies is an insult to the collective intelligence of the public and a slap in the face to the kids who looked up to him as a guy who overcame so much to accomplish great things. CHEATER!
“lie strong!”
Whatever. Another day, another news outlet trying to make tons of money off an aging athlete. What else is new? Why are people shocked by this? I’ve seen plenty of athletes since I was a kid admit to drug use. Does it really suprise people? America must be bored. How about the debt ceiling or gun control? More important matters to acknowledge, guys.
vive l’oprah!
The ironic thing is that he still is the greatest cyclist of all time. Everyone dopes and cheats in cycling. Not saying it’s right. Quite the contrary. However, if nobody doped including Lance, Lance would’ve still won 7+ Tours.
Well said!
He might have lied for years, and cheated at his own game, but he is still on my inspirational peoples list…
I can only hope you don’t have children if that’s honestly how you feel.
As others have said – for trying to destroy the people who told the world the truth, and profiting off of totally fraudulent lies – we have a cultural responsibility to hold him accountable. We have a responsibility to call the scumbag out.
That, and I hope you don’t have any friends or family who wore the wrist bands to help them get through the unimaginable toil of battling cancer.
Doping is wrong, lying is wrong. Cycling is a lie. Lance made mistakes. Big mistakes. Lance regrets it.
I reckon 80% of tour de france athlets are on drugs before or during the tour…he was the best athlete, with more focus and willpower…Somehow, still admire him a lot! What does it take to give such an interview, knowing what follows?
Who cares that he was using performance enhancing drugs to excel in a sport and be the best, it’s not like he was the only one doing it. You guys act like the majority of NFL players aren’t on steroids. Truth is the majority of sports players are on the juice, and at the end of the day it is more exciting to see physically dominant players compete, then skinny ones. Why do you think baseball was so popular when Mark Mcguire and those other guys were using PEDS? Because their newly added strength made the game more exciting with all those home runs!
I hope that the fallout from all of this does not impact on his family. It was good to see him human again.I wish him well and one day peace.Regardless of what he has done he also did a lot for the sport and remember he is one of 90%+ that doped!
Lance gave many people hope for many many years people who were inspired by his victories and hard work, people that went on to achieve wonderful things in their lives without doping. The lie that he lived still inspired and that can not be taken away. Everyone in the sport is doping and has been doping. It brings up many questions. What are we looking for in professional sports? Innate ability varies. Some people naturally have higher testosterone, hemoglobin, human growth factor than others. Are we trying to find the one who trains the hardest, strategizes the best, and gives his best effort? If so, then we have no way of measuring that. Some guy in the middle or back of the pack could be the winner in that race.
The concept of a level playing field is nebulous at best. But just like NASCAR, there are some boundaries we must work within… also known as the rules.
Given that doping in its various forms is dangerous and when some people dope, this behavior spreads like a virus, I think that doping should remain against the rules.
Lance screwed up. I have screwed up too. Who hasn’t? His interview appeared to me to be honest. I do not think he’s all that bad and certainly don’t think he has used his foundation illegally, but that’s an opinion which I have no real data to support. I don’t doubt this issue will be scrutinized and we will have our answer. Then, if clean of that type of fraud, Lance will have gained my trust. But he still has my admiration and forgiveness.
WOW. It makes me sad to read some of these posts. I suppose none of you have had any experience personal or otherwise with seriously emotionally damaged people with addictive issues? He’s lost everything and everyone (including himself). I can’t fathom being in his shoes. Addicts lie about everything and believe it themselves (period)! Of course he ruined other people along the way … that’s what happens. It doesn’t for a second erase the past by taking responsibility and admitting the truth. He has to live from here in out & “face to face” with himself. How many of YOU would be able to handle exposing your darkest truths to the world publicly?
Yes. What he did was truly terrible … I wish him well and thank him for being courageous enough to get on with his life in a healthier, more honest and kind way.
I agree that the sports industry is also to blame for driving talented and gifted athletes into super human machines as great risk on many levels. Yes, “don’t hate the player, hate the game”. So well put.
He can start by making amends to those who he slandered so hatefully over the years. That’s the first step in my book.
