Aspiring screenwriter Randy Moore came up with the idea of shooting a movie on the fly at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The fruit of his labors, Escape From Tomorrow, screened last night in the NEXT sidebar of the Sundance Film Festival. Various park locations figure into the narrative, according to the LA Times, including Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, Space Mountain, a Main Street parade and Epcot Center. The black-and-white movie about a father’s descent into madness was made without cooperation or approval from Disney, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. The movie described as “surrealistic and genre-defying” screens again tonight, tomorrow and on January 24th and 26th. It doesn’t reveal much, but here’s a clip:

Doubt this would get many viewers for free on UTube.
Not to be the snarky philistine, but when I read “surrealistic and genre-defying,” I wonder if that means “pretentious and “unwatchable.” Maybe I’m just jealous that I’m not in Park City.
It’s more likely you’re jealous you didn’t make this movie.
It could be that, but who knows, I guess you just had a useless thought in your head, and dammit, it had to get out!
Congratulations. All your hard work will now end up in a DO NOT RELEASE vault next to THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED, SONG OF THE SOUTH and LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF.
Song of the South can be found on Youtube, in it’s entirety.
Your point? AND LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF and SOTS can both be found on BitTorrent. That has nothing to do with the fact that this guy will never see a proper RELEASE of the film he made. He could, I suppose, release it to YouTube or Mega, but he’ll then be crushed with a lawsuit. That’s why Thom Andersen has never released LOS ANGELES and gets clearances for any non-academic showings, such as at LACMA last year.
Un. Watch. Able.
I’m dying to see this… but probably never will.
This piqued my interest. Maybe a modern take on Fellini/Truffaut? Would have been nice if the clip revealed more about the story.
Disney can try to stop him from releasing it but they might not be able to. It’s no different from a tourist posting a video of their trip to Disneyland on YouTube and there are thousands of those videos. The only people who could object are extras in the background they could demand money for appearing in the video if it makes money. If one of those tourists wanted to sell their “Fun Family Vacation at Disneyland” online how could Disney stop them from doing this? They could try but I don’t think they’d be able to. This guy’s film is certainly weird but he did not violate any laws he’s protected under the First Amendment nor did he violate any rules at Disneyland. He made an amateur home video that just happens to have a strange story.
I think it’s way more complicated than you are making it. but even if it were that simple, a family vacation video on You Tube is not being sold…it’s essentially word-of-mouth advertising for Disney. If they wanted to take any of those people to court, they could.
This guy has made a film full of Disney imagery that he is trying to sell (even though he has said he thinks that is highly unlikely), and it’s not a positive representation of the Disney brand.
Disney will shut this down, if only to create a precedence to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
The real question is what will happen if it picks up, say the Audience Award. I still think Disney will sink it, but it won’t happen quietly if it continues to receive massive amounts of attention.
They will try to get an injunction against him and his film but they will have to use a judge in Anaheim a friendly reliable judge who they have on their payroll for a long time. Disney owns many judges especially in Anaheim or whatever court district Disneyland is located in.
Goofy, if you make a narrative film you have to pay for the location you are shooting it in and the location is private property of the Disney corporation. And the first Amendment is not the only law in the world. Disney will sink this film.
On the fly…with a crane?
I may be wrong, but I don’t think that this clip was shot in the parks…this is a pretty generic pool (Disney Wold pools are pretty unique).
Looks like another “The Room.”
Then count me in!!
Sheesh. I’ve got way better videos on YouTube than that, and no one on a major Internet entertainment site advertises them for me for free.
Oh…and my videos suck.
Still can’t get your first movie made, huh? So sad…
Pedo pool guy creeps me out.
I was in the audience for the premiere screening at Sundance a couple of days ago — the movie’s not GREAT, but it is AMAZING how they were able to film at Disneyland and WDW without getting caught. I’m an annual passholder at both parks and I saw the film not knowing it was shot guerilla-style at the parks. It’s incredible to see how they actually made this movie (and they throw in some funny jokes for real Disney park fans).
” I’m an annual passholder…”
Okaaaaay then, ’nuff said.
This should be released via Torrent for all to see
Personally I hope Disney goes full guns on this guy and makes him regret the day he was born.
This is what a slave looks like.
The issue isn’t the First Amendment or the black robed whores of Anaheim. The issue is American’s insane IP regime and whether film artists will be allowed to make movies about human beings living in a recognizable social and political reality – a reality with trademarked cereals, sodas, songs and amusement parks – or not. If not, movies will slowly but surely become even more irrelevant than they are now, and the field of film narrative will fade away, replaced by youtube Fail! compilations and desperate imitations of video games.
