EXCLUSIVE: Vinnie Chase and Ari Gold are back, baby. Warner Bros has tonight given the greenlight on a movie version of Entourage, the HBO series that ran from 2004-2011. That’s about as far as the studio has gotten at this point, and there is no start date. But it’s a reprise for the inside Hollywood exploits of the up and coming film star, his agent, his manager, his under-appreciated TV actor brother and the childhood pal/driver who form his inner circle. The film will be directed by series creator Doug Ellin, who wrote the screenplay and who exec produced the series with Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson. Deals are starting to be made with Adrian Grenier who played Vinnie, Kevin Connolly who played his manager Eric “E” Murphy, Kevin Dillon who played the actor’s brother Johnny Drama, Jerry Ferrara who played their entrepreneurial driver Turtle, and of course Jeremy Piven who played the show’s iconic Type A talent agent-turned movie studio mogul Ari Gold.

In September 2012, the HBO series ended its 8th and final season with soap opera schmaltz but also a Hollywood cliffhanger. Agent Ari Gold becoming a newly minted studio mogul obviously set up the movie which series’ WME packaging agent Ari Emanuel (the prototype for Gold) and executive producers Mark Wahlberg and Steven Levinson want so badly. Ellin says that Wahlberg keeps promising “to kill me if I don’t write faster. Every time I see him, Mark says, ‘I’ve made 5 movies this year. Get going!” Ellin needed time off after spending “10 years of my life” on the TV series that premiered on HBO in 2004. He told Deadline his script starts about 6 months after the TV series leaves off. “There are interesting developments about Ari as a studio head, and that’s still the first page for me. But foremost is the friendship between the guys who are still hanging out and going to fun parties, and it continues with the same characters.” Ellin has kept in touch with all the key castmembers especially Connolly (“E”) and Ferrara (Turtle”) who are two of Ellin’s closest friends. All the Entourage actors have been getting other gigs while HBO has been paying Ellin for the script. Hopefully Drama’s agent Lloyd (Rex Lee), E’s girl Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), his management partner Scott (Scott Caan), their quirky director collaborator Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiro) and Ari’s agency partner Barbara Miller (Beverly D’Angelo) will all be in the mix, along with a swarm of real Hollywood VIPs playing themselves. While some naysayers might think this HBO-to-film has no shot, the first Sex And The City did really well.

10 bucks says this is Scott Caan trying to get a part in this sure-to-be hot mess.
Psyched. I hope they are drinking that Avion.. Shit is best
Yes, this movie will be a box office success and win an Oscar if they are all in. Deadwood is trash. Entourage is life of struggling actors, sgents, friends, relationships and life in Hollywood.
Movie great! But y not just continue the series
Jesus, you should write the script. NOT! But good baloney.
So weird I was just thinking about this show/movie today…Great news , can’t wait!!!!
I have a leaked copy of the script:
Page 10: Vince doesn’t wanna do the movie
Page 20: Vince wants to do the movie
Page 30: Vince can’t do the movie
Page 45: Ari really annoys Mrs. Ari
Page 60: Vince and Ari both reach the point of no return
Page 75: Vince is going to lose everything and so is Ari
Page 90: The word “douchebag” is used for a world-record 28th time
Page 105: Vince gets the movie, Ari gets a setup for the sequel
Page 110: Vince and E smile happily as magic-hour sunlight frames their faces
I am happy to see Jeremy Piven. I’m sorry I have weird taste, but I’m gay and I’d totally motorboat his asscheeks!!!! Yeah!!!!! Entourage!!
Thanks for making the dark recesses of the internet aka the comments section worth reading.
Did you really watch the show? Ari wasn’t offered the head of studio job. He was offered the head of the giant corporation conglomerate that owns it. He passed on the studio job before.
could be a fun movie
my call for hbo series that should be a movie
BORED TO DEATH!
This seems like such a savvy industry website, and then I read a line like, ” the first Sex And The City did pretty well.” Pretty well? It set all time records for its genre for its first weekend, and for worldwide gross. And, while the second film wasn’t very high quality (neither was the first, if we’re quibbling), it also did damn well.
????????
I love Entourage but I don’t know how far this movie will actually go. Fan base is way limited and unless they have a unique script I don’t see the studios cashing in on this project.
We will see what happens.
It seems that a wealth of commenters on Deadline are ‘writers’, therefore I have officially come to the point where I can no longer tell if comments are genius masked in sarcasm or real fanboyz speaking their truth.
I for one definitely can’t wait! Among TV writers there was a common game of watching Entourage and re-breaking a better version in your head as you watched it. It wasn’t hard to do, there were episodes almost entirely without conflict, whole seasons where Vince had nothing to do. For most episodes it was like the writers started to break a story, went to lunch, then had a few too many drinks and never came back to finish it in the afternoon – turns out that was apparently the case. This show was terrible and I enjoyed almost every minute of it. I expect the movie will be even worse, and I will be lined up on opening day.
Haters gonna hate. Creators gonna create!
This is SICK news the fans deserve 1 last ride with the boys, glad to see via twitter that dougs managed to get all the main cast signed on to make this
Not officially yet. Pretty sure they just hung out and celebrated last night.
Sooo pumped! This is going to be great!!! Was recently told at a dinner that I am Sloan’s long lost twin!! Best compliment I’ve ever received! Love this show, love all the actors!! Such an awesome team!!
Finally can’t wait!! Missed Ari so much!!!!!!
Creatively, probably not a great move.
Financially, probably a solid bet.
Let’s face it, the near-majority of the cast is likely available (fairly inexpensive), and unless they pull a Sex and the City 2 and shoot in Dubai or something, I’m sure most/all of it will be shot in LA, with no special FX or CGI. I’m guessing $30-35 million budget, max.
Worst case scenario, it opens to $15 million, ends up with $40 in NA and $10 overseas, and still technically shows a profit. Best case scenario, it rakes in one-fourth of Sex and the City’s cume for $100+ million.
Personally, I think they should make the movie about the gang spending a weekend in Vegas and basically call it Hangover 4. The Vegas ep was a good one.
I hate to say it but it was my guilty pleasure. Some people like soaps, others like reality shows. I liked Entourage. As Johnny Drama would say about the movie getting the green light…………VICTORY
No matter what you may think of the series I’d have made this deal in a heartbeat. This won’t be an expensive film and it will continue the franchise breathing new life into the boxset sales etc…..
But given the built in audience for this and the fact the film can be made for the change lost in the back of Robinov’s couch I’d say it’s a great bit of business.
Am still laughing at the guy waiting to watch this on his iPhone.
Ari was offered the role of CEO of Time Warner because the head guy was retiring, he was offered to be the head of the film studio a few seasons prior but didn’t take it and Dana Gordon(bad spelling) got the job.
Anyway; can’t wait for this movie, love Jeremy Piven – currently watching him in Mr. Selfridge and hes a fantastic actor.
