EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures is eyeing Kick-Ass star Aaron-Taylor Johnson to star in Godzilla, the Gareth Edwards-directed reboot of the franchise based on the iconic Japanese reptile. I’m told that Johnson, who starred in the Oliver Stone-directed Savages and Anna Karenina and followed by reprising in Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall is the frontrunner for the job. He won’t make a final decision on whether or not to take the offer until he sees the final polish that Frank Darabont is writing based on the Max Borenstein script.
Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are taking the creative lead on this project — they just put Mary Parent on after she became a producer of Pacific Rim — and Warner Bros is distributing everywhere except for Japan. There, rightsholders Toho will handle the release. While there has obviously been a legal dust-up in the producing ranks, the film is still on course to begin production in March, with the film dated for a May 16, 2014 release. If he takes the gig, Johnson could well have a second franchise, not at all a bad thing for a young actor. He’s repped by WME and Brillstein, and Christian Hodell in the UK.

He was fine in Kick-Ass but laughably, distractingly bad in AK. He’s not a leading man.
Agreed 100%
Aaron has unquestionable talent. Anyone who doesn’t agree can’t possibly be paying close enough attention. Many also thought that he was unfairly judged in AK because of his blonde “dandy boy” makeover. Not a leading man? He’s only 22 for pete’s sake! One also needs to see his entire body of work to judge properly.
This guy’s a big time star waiting to happen. He’s 22 and it looks like its finally happening.
Not really leading-man material, in my opinion. Weak as can be in AK and overshadowed by Cage and Moretz in Kick-Ass. Perhaps this film fits then as all human actors are bound to be overshadowed by the title monster.
See him in NOWHERE BOY. He has real charisma and just needs the right role to pop.
I like Johnson, which is why I think he should pass on “Godzilla.” It sort of seems beneath him.
The script is being written by Frank Darabont, he writer/diector of “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile.” He also created “The Walking Dead.” That’s a short but exemplary track record.
It is really hard to get an over 800 page book, into a 2 hour movie. After reading Anna Karenina last year…I was, at first, concerned that Aaron Taylor Johnson was the wrong choice. However, after seeing him in the movie, I thought he was fabulous. I think he has a great career ahead of him.
I’m supportive of his casing. He was wooden in AK but I blame the script for that, he was much better in “Savages” and “Nowhere Boy”, in which he played a young John Lennon. Watch those films and I think you’ll agree he has great potential.
