BREAKING: Sony Pictures is setting Will Gluck to helm Annie, the re-imagining of the Broadway musical. The helmer who directed Easy A and Friends With Benefits for Sony-based Screen Gems takes on a high-profile project that will be produced by James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith through their Overbrook Entertainment banner, and by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Jay Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith through Marcy Media. Willow Smith is no longer attached; she was 9 when development began and she has outgrown the role of Annie.
Gluck will revise the film’s screenplay, which was written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical and its book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin. That’s based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. The movie is contemporized and will shoot in the fall for a 2014 release.
Commenting on the announcement, Sony’s Doug Belgrad and Hannah Minghella said, “After seeing firsthand his work on several films for Sony, including Easy A and Friends With Benefits, we’re huge fans of Will Gluck. At the helm of Annie, he will bring to this film all the charm of the original Broadway production while also appealing to a new generation.”
Jay Z, who previously sampled the classic Annie song It’s The Hard Knock Life in Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem), stated, “For Marcy Media’s first foray into film, we couldn’t ask for better partners and mentors than Overbrook Entertainment. We are excited to work with Will Gluck and Sony Pictures Entertainment. My well-known affinity for the classic ‘Hard Knock Life’ makes Annie a natural vehicle to lead us into the world of the cinema.”
Pic is the first from Overbrook’s feature partnership with Carter, a union that also included the Broadway hit Fela!

Since the first film adapatation of “Annie” was such a rousing success and received such high praise from major movie critics everywhere, why not go to the same well again, right?
Rousing Success? The film lost $15 Million (Plus P&A) and that’s in 1982/1983 Dollars. Columbia spent $50 Million between the film itself and the rights back when that was A LOT of money.
Hence, “CynicalCritic”.
Sarcasm. Look it up.
The only choice now is Quvenzhane Wallis!
Excellent prediction!
Hope a movie exec sees that
Why is anything being written by Emma Thompson getting revised? Why did Emma Thompson write this in the first place? Why are Will and Jada and Jay-Z producing? Will this be like Tyler Perry’s Annie? Will he Perry play Mama Warbucks?
So. Many. Questions.
“Why are Will and Jada producing?”
Please do yourself a favor and look up Overbrook Entertainment. It’s not like they are new to producing.
And I’m wondering why in the world you would associate it with Tyler Perry? The quality of projects that Overbrook has cranked out is light speeds ahead of anything that TP could ever dream of pulling off!
Yeah, because Will Smith and Tyler Perry work together all the time. Their movies are so similar, it’s hard to tell them apart!
Will and Jada are producing b/c Sony and his prod co were developing the project for his daughter (The Karate Kid ring a bell?). Jay-Z’s company has a co-pro deal w/ Overbrook and this makes sense as a collaboration since Jay-Z can actually bring something to the table other than his name considering it’s a contemporary musical. Stupid. Questions.
Why would you associate Will Smith and Tyler Perry product? They’re nothing alike. I get it…Will’s black, Tyler’s black…. it’s gotta be the same thing…..sad… this is the 21st century
Malcolm Lee, Millicent Shelton could’ve helmed this. What’s so special about Gluck
Surely there must be another Smith daughter.
Hooray for Gluck!
IS there nothing Will Gluck CAN’T do? Go Will!!!
I was really liking everything Will Gluck was doing. That said, perhaps he and the team have something inspirational and fun and original to share here with a new “Annie,”but it just sounds like another gosh darn remake.
In the reboot/remake world we live in, ANNIE is one of the top contenders due for a “re-imagining.” The gap between rich and poor is such a hot topic and who better to represent the two groups than Annie and Warbucks? Gluck has been extremely successful with fresh takes on high school movies and rom-coms. Very excited to see what he does with this musical!
I don’t think they are making this a musical :/ It sounds like it’s going to be a drama.
They say it’s based on the musical, not the comic.
Just let Tyler Perry do it and call it a day. The one positive is
Willow is out.
Ehm I think he was being sarcastic.
Warbucks was named for the wartime profiteers who made fortunes selling weapons. So many people fail to realize where his name came from it was brilliant satire that should be expanded on but it won’t be his name will simply be one of those funny names that hardly anyone picks up on.
All three previous versions (the stage musical, John Huston’s 1982 film, and Rob Marshall’s execrable 1999 TV version) were such bastardizations of Harold Gray’s right-wing, anti-FDR comic strip that one cringes to see what this fourth outing will be. Why not just re-make “Oliver!” in drag?
Just want to know who will be casting so i can submitt my kid!
All I saw was “Willow Smith is no longer attached.” THANK GOD. Not that I was interested anyway, but those Smith kids are annoying. I refuse to spend a dime if either of them are in anything. I slipped up with the “Day The Earth Stood Still” remake; never again.
Uh-oh. When Spike Lee finds out it’s being directed by a white guy he’s gonna get re-e-e-eally pissed.
Just because the producers are black?
Spike would CRUSH this film! Mo’ Better Annie!
Cultural incest —on cue cultural incest,
opening up whole new vistas —–of NOWHERE.
Anyone know who will do casting for Annie remake?? Thanks
