I’ve learned that Amazon is in negotiations with Sony Pictures TV for a half-hour comedy series based on the hit 2009 feature horror comedy Zombieland. I hear the project is eying a pilot or straight-to-series order. It would mark the first original scripted series for the streaming service and the first Amazon original offering from a major studio. The company had been ramping up original production through its own Amazon Studios, the original film and series production arm of Amazon.com, which is behind six recently greenlighted comedy pilots.
I hear original Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are onboard for the series as writers/executive producers, as is the movie’s producer Gavin Polone, who would executive produce. Sony TV, Reese, Wernick and Polone previously set up a Zombieland comedy series project at Fox last season. The deal with Amazon would fulfill the trio’s original vision for Zombieland as a TV series, which was first developed for CBS in 2005 before the rise of alternative digital distributors of original series like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. After CBS passed and Syfy couldn’t make a deal for the show, the project was turned into the Ruben Fleischer-directed feature starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, which became a sleeper hit. I hear Fleischer, busy with pilots under his overall deal at 20th TV, is not involved in the Zombieland series, with Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) in talks to direct. Craig is a self-professed big Zombieland fan, listing the film among his favorite horror comedies. “Zombieland was just one of these fun rides,” he said. The first 30 minutes were probably some of the most exciting and humorous action-comedy-horror filmaking I’ve ever seen.”
Sony TV has an existing relationship with Amazon. In May the two companies were in serious discussions about continuing Sony’s cancelled ABC drama Pam Am on the streaming platform, but ultimately couldn’t make a deal.

original material was sooooo good (earlier script draft as well) please don’t let Fleischer wrec… er Direct it again!
wait till you see the Fleischer free version if you doubt me… oh, and then look at cast, concept/ setting of Gangster Squad then watch it.
Bill Murray scene was only thing of value in zombieland that wasn’t better in script form.
Sounds good to me. I would watch it.
Goodbye vampires, hello zombies!
Now that TV, theatres and the internet have been saturated with vampires, I suppose the next sensible theme would be zombies, thanks to “The Walking Dead”.
A word to industry execs: Just because one show about zombies is popular does not mean that 20 more shows about zombies will be just as popular.
Must be preparing to reap the benefits from The World War Z movie.
Kudos to Amazon for showing good taste. These guys proved to be TV innovators with Joe Schmo. I heard the original pilot script was great. Will be watching…
Yeah right, I’m sure Ruben’s other “pilots” are why he’s not involved.
Zombieland was a complete disaster until they brought in a whole team of people to fix his mess. Gavin, Wernick and Reese want nothing to do with the talentless hack.
And then there’s the uber failure Gangster Squad.
Nice spin but no one wants him around to tank things this time around.
Cynicalcritic, whether or not you like it, the last three shows to feature vampires that have launched — True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and Being Human have all gone on to have very successful, multi season runs. In the cases of True Blood and The Vampire Diaries — they’ve become flagship shows for their respective networks (HBO & CW). So before you judge something based soley on the fact that “one” show is successful — doesn’t mean your opinion is valid. Now, chances are, Zombieland will go to series — and it could be successful, the movie was great, the show will likely be good too especially since the original writers are back. There’s plenty of ways to tell a Zombie story… it just helps that the Walking Dead proved interest is high for the creature.
Why bother if you can’t get the cast back?
Palone deserves all the credit for Zombieland with all the cleaning up they had to do after Fleischer who apparently didn’t know what he was doing. and by the response (or lack thereof) to Gangster Squad, apparently still doesn’t.
