Academy Award nominee Christoph Waltz got some extra exposure during the Oscar voting period with a hosting gig on NBC’s Saturday Night Live last night. But the Django Unchained star’s debut on the latenight sketch show pushed ratings down. SNL with host Waltz and musical guest Alabama Shakes averaged a 4.6/12 in the metered-market households, down 6% from last week when Justin Bieber was emcee. In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, last night’s SNL drew a 2.5/11 in adults 18-49, down 7%. NBC would not confirm but if my calculations are correct, this are SNL‘s second lowest results of the season in households and 18-49.

Love Mr Waltz, but the show was an overall snoozefest. Once again, SNL’s up & down writing just makes it hard to watch week-in and week-out. Opening monologue was very poor.
It was wretched
way to leave out that it’s a holiday weekend
Exactly. Obviously it’s going to be lower on a holiday weekend. Thought last nights show was fantastic from start to finish. Such an upgrade from Bieber last wknd.
I second that. Wish more people watched since finally it was a great show!
Yeah, a holiday weekend known for furniture sales and f-all else. Not seeing how that would affect viewer numbers.
Watching now… And enjoying.
I thought Christoph Waltz was the best host of the season. He was so likeable and funny. The Pope sketch was hilarious. So was the game show and the Jamarcus brothers.
Elliott is right. I’m sure the holiday weekend hurt ratings. The show was hilarious. Christoph killed it.
Loved Christoph. There is nothing this guy can’t do. I thought it was a very strong show.
So true, is there seriously anything he can’t do?? I mean the guy is amazing. And now we know he’s hilarious and can sing and tap dance!
I completely disagree. I thought Christoph was refreshingly funny in what has been a mediocre season of Snl so far. The video shorts were hilarious (especially the Pope one) and game show skit was fantastic. He is really a talented guy. Who knew he could tap dance!!?
Christoph can do no wrong in my book. I thought he was great. And so were Alabama Shakes!
- kate mckinnon’s olya polavsky was hilarious.
- i like the sound on the Alabama Shakes’ lead singer
- djesus uncrossed was hilariously blasphemous
I loved last nights show. Christoph was so funny playing the game show host and Fred Armisen’s boyfriend.
Christoph was absolutely hilarious. I thought it was the best show of the season so far. SNL needs to get more real actors like him instead of boring celebs like Bieber.
Christoph was brilliant as always.
He totally crushed it. Haven’t laughed that hard watching SNL in a while. Go Christoph!!! Lets hope he wins another Oscar next weekend!!
As I stated beforehand, this show should be canceled after season 40 completes in 2015…the show is dragging on in a bad way.
Lorne, Lorne, Lorne R U OK?? Maybe come back home for while. You hired a guy who plays “NAZI’S in the movies to guest star on a a COMEDY show? And be the host? Not the funniest show of the year, Lorne!
I thought the show was one of the funniest of the season and Christoph’s performance was flawless. The musical booking has got to be one of the reasons the ratings went down. I’m sure Alabama Shakes is a big hit in Williamsburg and Silver Lake but young hipsters aren’t watching SNL.
I thought it was a very good show. DJesus Uncrossed was just so blasphemously outrageous. They do need to move away from the host opening musical number. I think only one show in the last 10 didn’t have a song in the host opening.
I laughed.
I don’t know who Christoph Waltz is. I don’t know who Alabama Shakes are. Either I’m not hip with the jive, or they just got a bunch of whoevers.
Just the fact that you used the phrase “hip with the jive” proves your point. If you were going to use it correctly, it would be “hip TO the jive”.
