ABC Family has ordered two reality series: Dancing Fools, which will be hosted by Melissa Peterman, star of the network’s hit comedy series Baby Daddy, and docu-soap The Vineyard (working title). Production on both series will begin this spring. ABC Family’s most recent unscripted effort, series Beverly Hills Nannies, aired last summer. It did not go to a second season.
Dancing Fools is a half-hour unscripted comedy created and executive produced by Phil Gurin (The Singing Bee, Oh Sit) and produced by the Gurin Co. ABC Family is keeping details about the premise under wraps, but judging by Gurin’s track record of turning karaoke and musical chairs into reality series, this may again be a take on a party game. In addition to Dancing Fools, Peterman also is hosting the upcoming ABC reality series Bet On Your Baby. The Vineyard is a dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap, which follows a handful of twentysomethings in Martha’s Vineyard for the summer. It is created and executive produced by Dave Broome (The Biggest Loser) and Brian Smith (MasterChef) and produced by 25/7 Prods. The two unscripted series will premiere in the summer alongside recently picked up new dramas The Fosters, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Twisted.

What about a second season of Beverly Hills Nannies? You mean to tell me that ABC Family is actually doing these shows and not more of the nannies?
What will America do without sassy Justin?
This is what they abandoned their comedy slate for? No new comedies go to series this year so they can bring us this crap. News flash: Baby Daddy is terrible and a 1.6 share is not the definition of a “hit.”
Have they actually “abandoned” their comedy slate? Or is it just a lag in development? I’m not opposed to reality on ABC Family since they have plenty of room to experiment on days when they would otherwise be airing some second-string feature film. Their demo doesn’t look their brand for reality, but that could change with one breakout show. But their core strength remains girl-friendly dramas with comedy coming in second.
Well, this certainly makes sense. As we all know by now (tongue firmly in cheek) there is an apparent lack of reality shows on tv nowadays. Hopefully, these two programs & the rest that are sure to follow will fill the current void for even more uninspired crap!
Why? I highly doubt either shows are going to be any good. Besides, the target audience for ABC Family isn’t going to want to watch reality shows. The shows they have now are good for their audience. I don’t know why they are trying to break into this ridiculous reality tv trend.
Yes, Eric. Reality tv is a trend. Just like that hip-hop fad.
Just as every other cable channels is moving toward high-quality scripted shows to deliver more premium content, ABC Family runs in the other direction toward the least common denominator, cheap-to-produce drivel. Smart move, ABC Family. Keep up the good work– maybe in a couple of years, you can be getting Court TV numbers! Or, I hear QVC’s “Knife Show” is also doing really well in the ratings.
Reality shows are cheap to produce which is probably why they went this route instead of those comedies. Baby Daddy and Melissa & Joey is enough for now.
Any updates on Terminales?
Our island wants nothing to do with your horrible show. You’re going to make a mockery of where we live.
If I hear of another hula hoop dancing, cheesy, Phil Gurin show being on the air I may vomit.
