EXCLUSIVE UPDATED: The Mad Hatter may get his own series. I’ve learned that ABC brass are mulling spinning the character from fairytale drama
Once Upon A Time into his own series. I hear ABC’s original plan was to do it with Sebastian Stan, who has played the character in six episodes. But he was not available for the potential series commitment, so the network has quietly put out feelers to recast the role. (Stan is finishing a run in Picnic on Broadway, segueing straight into training for his role in Captain America.)
I hear one scenario has ABC filming a short presentation with the character, with a 13-episode commitment to the project also bandied about. Once creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis are involved. It is also possible that the Mad Hatter returns to Once for a guest stint later this season. If the character and his storyline pop (as they have done in the past), that would serve as a backdoor pilot and ABC will consider launching a spinoff centered on the Mad Hatter. If he appears on the show, the new Mad Hatter would be cast as a guest star with a series option behind it. This is not an unusual practice for Once, which casts many guest stars with series options, allowing the network to make them regulars. Actors who have been upgraded to regulars on the show from guest stars include Emile de Ravin (Belle), Meghan Ory (Red Riding Hood), Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook). There is an Alice In Wonderland-themed project already in the works for next season — NBC’s drama pilot Wonderland, executive produced by Anthony Zuiker, which was originally set at ABC Studios, the studio behind Once. Its production was recently rolled.

Derivative material begets derivative material. ABC really must be hurting thinking this will work for a series.
Just what ABC should do… continue to water down their already watered down hit dramas.
Props to the writers for collecting that fat check.
I think you should get Seth Gable. He is a brilliant actor and can play so many different levels.
I completely agree. Seth Gabel would be great. This is the only logical choice I can think of for right now.
I second this!
This is literally the only way I could accept the idea of recasting this role. He’s great and he and Sebastian Stan have a similar look and acting style and often seem to play similar roles.
What made the Mad Hatter a viewers favorite was Sebastian Stan’s acting.
Without him, this is not going to work. People wanted the character a regular because of Sebastian’s work.
My thoughts exactly.
I agree as well.
Please no. Sebastian Stan made Hatter into someone we want to see. If they replace him for a spin-off show, I don’t think I’m the only one who won’t be interested in watching it.
There are some characters that rely on the actor playing them, and Stan’s Hatter is one of those characters. Can we please focus on making the plots in Once more interesting before trying to dilute it with a spin-off that will crash and burn?
Bingo. The appeal was definitely because of the Stan’s portrayal of the character, not JUST the character. Bad idea.
That’s like wanting to spin-off Rumpelstiltskin but not use Robert Carlyle.
I came on the Internet this morning to find this — ditto what everyone else said. The Mad Hatter and/or Jefferson is a compelling character regardless, but the reason everyone loved THIS Mad Hatter was how Sebastian Stan played it. I’m all for more Mad Hatter in Once Upon a Time, but in my opinion ONCE needs to get its act together and make sense itself/follow its own character arcs and plot threads before ABC decides to launch a spin-off show — and if they did launch a spin-off show with existing characters they only should use the current actors if they do so.
I agree it would be like trying to do a Rumpelstiltskin spin-off show without Robert Carlyle.
If they’re so eager to do this, wait a couple of years until Sebastian Stan has availability. Otherwise, write a whole new show concept that is unrelated to ONCE or the Mad Hatter. Yeesh.
Greg Grunberg should play the Mad Hatter. THAT guy needs his own show. He’s so talented.
speaking as a Once fan this is a terrible idea. Sebastian Stan was great as the Mad Hatter but no spin off is needed for his character. It would make more sense to do a spin off with Red,Whale, and a couple other monsters moving out of Storybrooke into the real world or even a spin off with Auroura, Mulan and Phillip trying to restore there fairytale world and undo the curse.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh wow, already? They can’t even keep their numbers steady in their second season and they want to attempt a spin-off with a recast? Yikes.
I think they should spin off Mulan, and make a movie out of her. Maybe even animated feature film.
LOL, Great idea! Someone should sell the idea to Disney.
anonymous is right, there really is no reason for this, given that this is credible info. It wouldn’t make sense, and I think the “monsters of storybrooke in the real world” or mulan, aurora and Philip WOULD make a better spinoff
Sebastian Stan was amazing as the mad hatter and don’t like that they are replacing him, let alone making a spin off.
I have to say, I’m intrigued. Sure, Stan was great in the role, but Wonderland is a really interesting location and the Jefferson character was one of the best on the show. Look forward to seeing what whoever they bring in can do with the role!
Worst idea EVER. Once Upon a Time producers/writers have no idea what they are doing. I love the series for the actors who play the parts, all of them are awesome! but the writing is SO BAD with plot holes and senseless, cheap drama and things that doesn’t make sense. If I continue watching is because I love the work of Robert Carlyle, Emilie de Ravin, Lana Parrilla and a few others. A spin-off with another actor just WON’T work. I mean, the show isn’t working that well anymore, how could a spin off take off?
THANK YOU for saying that the way you did. My sentiments EXACTLY.
I also am opposed to this, Sebastian Stan made that role but if they do recast then they should give it to Andrew Lee Potts. He played the Mad Hatter on SyFys version of Alice in Wonderland, “Alice”. I think he did a good job in it.
Totally agree.
SO EXCITING! Two Onces at onces!?? I can’t wait!
Wooooow. Wasn’t interested in the actor, nor the story behind the character. Who are the ones thinking this is a good idea?? Mulan and Aurora had more of a spinoff set up! We’re wondering what happens to them most of all, not the Mad Hatter, who already found his daughter. His story is closed!
If they’re going to make a spin-off for the Mad Hatter, it should be Sebastian. His portrayal of the Mad Hatter was perfect.
Call me Sebastian Stunned. I’m surprised they’d recast the role, but if he’s moving on to other things what could they do? Still, I have faith in Kitsis/Horowitz to make an awesome show. I’m cautiously excited.
Sebastian Stan had a contract with Marvel for several films before he signed on with Once, so that’s a pre-existing commitment. And, the next movie, as far as I know, that he’ll be working on is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so he should have a pretty big role, there! I do agree with your last statement, though; it should be pretty awesome, regardless, and I’ll miss Sebastian Stan as well, but I cannot WAIT for Winter Soldier!
But his character died in The 1st Avenger. What is this franchise? A soap opera? I loved Cap 1. Don’t f*#@ it up.
They aren’t. The titular “Winter Soldier” in Captain America: Winter Soldier refers to Bucky, who is resurrected by the soviets to be their own version of Captain America.
As a big Oncer, I’m nervous that they’d recast such a great actor, but I’m still pretty excited for a new show. Wonderland is a cool place with all sorts of intriguing possibilities. Bring on the stoned caterpillars!
I agree, Seth Gabel would be an awesome choice for the role. He was so good and manic in Dirty Sexy Money. If I was casting this I would choose Seth Gabel.
I honestly can’t see OUAT’s Mad Hatter as anyone other than Sebastian. Part of me wants him to become a regular in this show, but the other part of me wants him to commit to CA:TWS. Just one more episode, please, Sebastian? I really want to see you interact with Captain Hook.
One way I could see this working is if they cast a younger Mad Hatter on Once to do his backstory, then cast him in the spinoff. Still, though, bring back Sebastian Stan when he’s available for present-day/flashback Hatter episodes on Once, just like they do with Jamie Dornan.
I saw Greg on the Today show recently , and he’s enormous. He’s going to have to lose some weight if he wants a part like this.
Once is one of the best shows currently on network TV, so I’m all for more of it. Sure, Sebastian Stan was really good in the role, but who’s to say the new guy won’t be even better? I’ll see how deep this rabbit hole goes…
In a business with a massive failure rate, ABC wants to continue their relationship with a team that’s delivering for them? With all due respect to Stan and his fans, this is a no brainer.
I am continually astounded by this fairytale phenomenon. As if the fantasy world of vampires, werewolves, zombies and virgin teens not puerile enough, now it’s the influx of fairytales. First the two “genres” or “trends” contributed to the destruction of the Hollywood film and now that TV has become (primarily cable) has become the last refuge for adult stories and critically acclaimed filmmakers and writers, the tv bosses have decided to emulate film with the same garbage. The classic Joseph Campbell book about myths may well be used as a guide in shaping material, but it shouldn’t be taken literally!!! I stopped reading stories like this with and to my son when he was about eight years old! He clearly outgrew them. Hmmmmm.
