UPDATE: Deadline has learned that beginning July 1st, Netflix will cease streaming of season 1 of Downton Abbey. Hulu will continue to offer seasons 1 and 2 until an unspecified time near the end of 2013, at which point all streaming rights will belong solely to Amazon. When asked for comment, Netflix referred Deadline to statements made last week after their 2012 earnings were announced. The service stated it would “forgo or not renew content that doesn’t optimize for engagement and cost efficiency across the available content choices within the constraints of our budget.”
PREVIOUS: Seasons 1 and 2 are already available on Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service, and the company says the PBS drama is its most watched series ever. Now Amazon says that it will have exclusive streaming rights to the current season of the Carnival/MASTERPIECE co-produced series beginning June 18 — and will remain the sole streaming home for the series for next season and, if it’s produced, the one after. Later this year, it says, “no digital subscription service other than Prime Instant Video will offer any seasons of Downton Abbey.” Amazon Prime shows are available to people who pay $79 a year for a combination of services including the ability to have many products that Amazon sells delivered without an additional charge. The Downton Abbey announcement comes on the same day Netflix introduced its first original series, House Of Cards. Although the e-retailer is spending far less than the $2B or so that Netflix likely will pay this year for content, it “is likely spending more than $500M and, like Netflix, is growing increasingly focused on both exclusive syndicated programming and original programming,” BTIG’s Richard Greenfield noted this week. Amazon’s recent deals provide it with streaming rights to shows including The Closer and Fallen Skies, and A&E programming. It’s also ordering up original shows.

I’m guessing streaming deals are different than purchased content, but does this affect people that have ordered and paid for it already on iTunes?
No. This is about streaming rights that begin in June.
House of Cards isn’t the first original show on Netflix. Lillyhammer is.
Lillyhammer was made mostly for Norwegian TV.
Maybe, but Lillyhammer is shown in the US, and has been since 2012. It is the first original series from Netflix.
And I really liked Lilyhammer. I know, it wasnt the most cerebral of shows, but i liked it. Sorry they did not make a second season.
Is Downton Abbey Season 2 or 3 on CD? If so, where can I rent it? Thanks.
Sorry to read this article. I avoid Amazon at all costs and will NEVER sign up for an ongoing service of any kind. My plan is to find Downton Abbey on DVDs; I’m confident the cost of a DVD set, especially on e-Bay or Craigslist, will be cheaper than paying an endless fee to Amazon.
Eventually the people who own video content will market directly to consumers. With Netflix streaming we’re close to breaking the cable TV hold on video; we can force cable companies to be pure ISPs and, eventually, give us the same speeds and rates other western countries have had for years. Now we have to block these exclusive streaming contracts or we’ll all be paying more in total, to Netflix, Hulu, Apple, etc., for a complete selection.

You can get season 2 on netflix via dvd not streaming
I started getting the other seasons for free at my local library. I pay to much for regular cable and Netflix. I need a freebie once in a while
I’m sorry to hear this. Netflix seems to be falling away from the herd. I purchased it in January and noticed quite a very outdated seasons of shows and not terrific film content. Mythbusters is over 1 year out of date as well, with the latest season being 2010. I plan to cancel my subscription I think. They don’t seem to have the ability to compete in the market.
This is like the fox guarding the henhouse. Amazon owns Netflix! All smoke and mirrors. This is all really just a ploy to on Amazon’s part to get us to pay for both services. Congress needs to act now to keep Amazon from becoming a mega-monopoly. That said, as a frequent online shopper, I save a lot of shipping bucks with Amazon Prime membership. Since they’ve just added Justified to their lineup, I find myself turning to my Roku instead of my Apple TV. I wish Apple would do a deal with Amazon for Prime video streaming! Altogether, this is going to be another area in our culture where the have-nots and the marginal haves will be even more at risk for losing access to entertainment and cultural enrichment if they/we can’t keep up with the ever-rising costs of broadband.
Amazon does not own Netflix. As someone that has owned the stock I can tell you, Netflix (nflx)will probable never be owned by Amazon. Please check out the two stocks and I’m sure you understand why they will never be one.
Tell Amazon or Netflix, or who ever else is trying to profit from what started out as a PPS event, to stuff it where the sun doesn’t shine. I am prepared to stop doing business with either of them. I hope that perhaps PBS still has some say in what they air and perhaps they will re-run Season 3 before the beginning of Season 4. Don’t forget the hidden costs of video streaming. After you pay your subscription fees to Amazon, you will also incur data charges for the video data streaming. (I use my smartphone for all data purposes.) I for one am done with both Amazon and Netflix.
So wait a minute. I pay for PBS via my tax dollars and what I contribute. I pay for my television service via Dish Network. I pay for Netflix and now in order to watch a free program aired on PBS I’m told I must pay again via Amazon and stream which also costs me data in order to watch what was originally a free show??? Tell you what stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.
Sick of being Ripped Off and prepared to do something about this.
So, shouldn’t I then assume that I can watch Downton Abbey Season 2 somewhere w/o paying the $79 to Amazon if I do it b/f June?? Please let me know….thanks.
If you use your smartphone for everything, why in god’s name would you not get an unlimited data plan to avoid extra data charges?
My husband and I just finished watching the first season of Downton Abbey through Netflix streaming video. We had to sign up for Amazon Prime in order to start season 2. We were disappointed in the Amazon version as there is no close captioning available and the video quality was sub par and at times seemed out of focus. I cancelled Amazon Prime immediately and will probably buy the CD instead. Netflix streaming provided BOTH captions as well as an excellent picture.
I purchased amazon prime for the purpose of watching Dowton Abbey. I paid $79 for the year. Season 3 is not included with Prime, the option is to spend $1.99 per episode, 0r 2.99 for HD. Thanks for ripping off the consumer Amazon….
I see all these new streaming sites going toward commercializd service and HITTING OUR WALLETS for all they can get. THE REASON WE STAY WITH NETFLIX IS FOR COMMERCIAL FREE VIEWING. We thought getting a HULU ACCOUNT would STOP THE INTRUSION OF OUR LIMITED VIEWING TIME BY ADVERTISEMENTS! No such luck. We looked to see if they had an AD FREE account. But alas not even for a higher priced streaming plan can you escape. Amazon and Itunes and ofhers will charge us per episode costing us more than our cable/satellite TV plans. ‘PLEASE HELP US DEVELOPE AN AD FREE ZONE.’ Similar to the Netflx model that offers newer content. Netflix has a huge user base but once the media found out how big it was they really stangled Netflix for ten times the amount from 30 mil. to 300 mil. Thi hs curtailled netflix’s ability to expand to newer TV content. Still at $7.99 they are an ‘AD FREE’ zone. Thank You Netflix!
