EXCLUSIVE: AMC has put in development The Terror, a drama series adaptation of the 2007 bestselling novel by Dan Simmons, which is being executive produced by Scott Free TV, Television 360 and feature producer Alexandra Milchan. Written by hot feature writer David Kajganich, The Terror is set in 1847 when the crew of a Royal Naval expedition to find the Arctic’s treacherous Northwest Passage discovers instead a monstrous predator
– a cunning and vicious Gothic horror that stalks the ships in a desperate game of survival, the consequences of which could endanger the region and its native people forever. Kajganich executive produces with Scott Free’s David Zucker and Ridley Scott, TV 360′s Scott Lambert and Meghan Lyvers, Milchan and Simmons. The project keeps AMC in the genre space where it has enjoyed a tremendous success with The Walking Dead.
On the feature side Kajganich is writing another book adaptation, The Stand, based on Stephen King’s novel, for Warner Brothers, Mosaic and Roy Lee. He wrote True Story for New Regency and Plan B, which is shooting next month starring James Franco and Jonah Hill; and A Bigger Splash, an adaptation of the French film La Piscine, which is shooting later this year with Scott Free producing and Luca Guadagnino directing. Kajganich is repped by UTA and Madhouse. Milchan serves as EVP of production for New Regency, which she rejoined in 2011. As an independent producer, her credits include Paranoia and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Television 360, the TV arm of Management 360, is behind two series, HBO’s Game Of Thrones and Bravo’s It’s A Brad, Brad World. Under Lyvers, who runs TV 360, the unit has ramped up TV development, selling five scripts to the broadcast networks this season, one of which, NBC drama I Am Victor, was picked up to pilot. On the cable side, TV 360 has The Oath by Mark Heyman in development at Showtime. Scott Free has a growing TV slate. In addition to the CBS series The Good Wife, the company is producing the Showtime pilot Vatican, directed by Ridley Scott; Discovery Channel’s first scripted miniseries Klondike, starring Chris Cooper; Nat Geo’s upcoming Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy films; non-fiction series Crimes Of The Century, which was recently acquired by CNN; limited series World Without End for Reelz, a followup to Pillars Of The Earth; and recent A&E miniseries Coma. Simmons’ new novel, The Abominable, will be published by Little, Brown in the fall 2013.

It sounds like a huge ratings hit. AMC is on their way to become the biggest cable channel.
This is fantastic news. I heard Kajganich’s pitch was out of this world good.
Aren’t TV concepts supposed to support multiple seasons? Like more than 2? Did I miss a memo?
Exactly. That’s why I heard his pitch was so good, though no one would tell me the “secret.” I heard he pitched five seasons, which use the Franklin piece, but not exclusively.
Obviously it’s going to be wider than the book.
Congrats to everyone involved. DK is a damn good writer and a great guy all around. Hopefully he’ll have much more control over his work in television.
Great news. I was obsessed with this book when I read it.
I too was obsessed and had to talk about the chapters I had read the night before every morning to my friend who also became obsessed.
Hopefully they place it behind walking dead during season 4
Though I love the sound of this project, I have to say, I’m not sure how this premise can last multiple seasons. Unlike a show like The Killing, that can change things up every season (or two) — I don’t see how this has legs. Sounds like something that would be a much better mini-series then regular series. It does sound good though and I’d tune in if it went all the way to series.
This sounds a hell of a lot classier than Walking Dead. Would be smart for AMC to have something more spooky than gory in their lineup.
Their making The River again! Woo hoo!
This book was the longest, hardest read. Well written, but just brutal, and really makes you feel like you’re there while things fall apart over many months. If the show is half as bleak, it’ll be really engaging.
The real terror will be Showrunner’s when he or she is fired five minutes into the pilot’s airing.
Yeah, just like what happened to Weiner, Gilligan, and Sud.
Just reading this book made me cold and miserable. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it but the brutal, endless cold was visceral.
Master and Commander meets Carpenter’s The Thing. FREAKING AWESOME.
Sounds like “At the Mountains of Madness” just on the opposite Pole.
Note from the mere novelist here: I’m delighted with both this new relationship with AMC and especially with the truly impressive array of talent that has already come aboard (sorry for the nautical talk) for THE TERROR. If the story were just about a supernatural-style critter stalking men aboard these two historical two ships — HMS Terror and HMS Erebus — that are frozen in the ice, it might be a 2-season wonder at most. But the little we know about the disappeared-forever 126 men of the 1845 John Franklin Expedition tells us that the ships were frozen in place for almost three years –with an inexplicably heavy loss of life (especially amongst the officers) — and then Captain Crozier (who’d taken over for the suddenly –and mysteriously– deceased Admiral Franklin) — “took to the ice” as the Erebus and Terror were crushed, his surviving crew man-hauling two-ton sledges across ice, high pressure ridges, and the low, gravel-spit islands, in a desperate bid to walk the 2,000+ miles to an English outpost in northern Canada. So there may well be enough variety in dangers, scenery, the pace of storytelling, and the growing understanding of the nature and complex threat of the Thing on the Ice to support several involving seasons — reflecting, perhaps, the five years we know of for a near certainty that Franklin’s men struggled to survive. — DS
“2000 + miles?” They tried to walk to Fort Resolution, a Hudson’s Bay Company outpost 600 miles southwest.
Great. Now how about another Hyperion book??
I haven’t read the novel, but it sounds like you just revealed about fifty spoilers, Sir. Keep in mind, not everyone knows this chapter of history, and many may well tune in to this show to learn it, and to enjoy the SUSPENSE of doing so. NO MORE SPOILERS, PLEASE.
I have to say the book was awesome.
Great project but why is Zucker in with sleezy tv 360 in a non-writing EP role? 360 loves to act like Game of Thrones was their baby rather than merely repping the creators. Seriously, they will latch on to anything if it feels like a sale.
Good call. I still have yet to understand why managers in this town insist on becoming producers. Representing a client and guiding his or her career through the studio system and watching their projects come alive isn’t enough??
I, too, loved this book, and am happy to see Dan Simmons post on this! A series sounds like an awesome idea that would have to be planned carefully so it doesn’t wear out its welcome… as a couple of posters pointed out above, it is COLD, BLEAK and MISERABLE, and everyone is constantly STARVING. Its as though “Game of Thrones” were just about the characters north of The Wall, with way less food. I kind of wish AMC would just make a commitment to making it a miniseries as opposed to something more open-ended… but all-in-all, I am ON BOARD (more nautical talk).
AMC needs another genre show to air after TWD. With those huge ratings they are wasting a good opportunity to launch another series, specifically a genre series. I hope they pick this up for next Fall.
Wow! A comment from Dan Simmons himself. Well Dan if you are reading this comment, thanks for all your great work over the years. The series I’d really like to see though would be based on Carrion Comfort…I think there’s a few years in that one. Or Hyperion…i know they keep trying to make it into movies but I don’t know. That might just be too tough a nut to crack for the movies.
As for THE TERROR…I agree with MM above. That book was brutal to get through. I felt like I was on the ice for three years myself. Totally bleak. Will be interesting to see how it would turn out as a series.
Best of luck to all those involved as we can all use more somewhat realistically presented horror on TV or anywhere for that matter.
HP Lovecraft anyone? I hope they find the necronomicon.
I’m curious how they’re going to turn this into an ongoing series.
I’m pumped about this news. One of my favorite books from the past few years. Ben Foster would make a great Hickey.
All of the white characters are British or Irish. Forget about casting any American actors in those roles.
One of the best period horror novels of the year when it came out, if this show captures the vast loneliness, hopelessness, and desperation of the arctic, with the “noisy silence” of crackling ice-flows, mind-numbing cold, etc., the starvation, cannibalism, bodies shutting down in the sub-zero temps of the stranded men, it will be a winner for sure! Plus the supernatural beast-spirit, and Ridley Scott, too…?! If this is done right, I’m going to flatten my own nose pressing it up against the screen in sheer excitement!
truly enjoyed the book.the hole after reading a good book is still with me.original idea for the creature.cant wait for the series by amc.
looking forward to the terror! AMC ‘s walking dead is like the greatest show on tv right now too bad we have to wait till october. but the terror seems promising although im wondering how they’ll be able to expand it for a multiple season tv series?
