Isn’t it pointless for CBS Standard And Practice to issue this ‘Wardrobe Advisory’ in advance of the 55th
Annual Grammys broadcast this Sunday when nudity is the norm at that awards show? (Photo is Pink at her 2010 Grammy performance upside down and nearly naked in a flesh-colored bodysuit.) “I assume that my lovely colleagues do not get this same email for the Oscars,” my source texts. “And yes, this is a real email.” But no laughing matter are the last sentences: “The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.” Does that include the American Flag, AIDS, breast cancer, and other widely accepted wardrobe embellishments? (Edited):

Subject: 55th GRAMMYS: Standard And Practice Wardrobe Advisory-kindly confirm receipt of s&p standards-
***GRAMMYS 2013***
CBS Program Practices advises that all talent appearing on camera please adhere to Network policy concerning wardrobe.
Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible “puffy” bare skin exposure. Please avoid commercial identification of actual brand name products on T-shirts. Foreign language on wardrobe will need to be cleared. OBSCENITY OR PARTIALLY SEEN OBSCENITY ON WARDROBE IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR BROADCAST. This as well, pertains to audience members that appear on camera. Finally, The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.

Well, there goes my top three reasons to even watch.
I’m okay with it. If men can watch these award shows without fear of seeing somehow penis slip into their field of vision, I’d like as a woman to not have to see titties on every award show or performance.
Tired of female exploitation in entertainment, seriously. Look at Beyonce. Had a baby (allegedly) months ago and was up there shaking and gyrating like a life-sized vibrator for millions at the Superbowl. Its becoming that if you aren’t showing ass crack, or your boobs aren’t busting out of a tiny top, you can’t get attention as a female artist. It used to be about talent. If sending out emails about not exposing “fleshy parts” gets us back to that, I’m all for it.
This is because we are turning away from the filth that passes as entertainment/culture today. Good-bye and good riddance, you won’t get my eyeballs nor my $$$.
The would say azzholes must not be exposed, but then no one would come.
Good grief the only reason that people tune into that farce is to see some T&A.
It is more fun to watch the AVN awards for “best actor, best solo performance, best newcomer” etc., at least you get some titilating entertainment and not bunch of obnoxious and odious actors pontification about their political beliefs, and having to listen to their endless “thank you thank you” at least Obama got that part right about “you didn’t build that” when referenced against Hollywood.
Will not watch.
Just another reason not to watch the overpaid court jesters stroking each other.
bingo!
CBS..Let’s make damn sure the show is not entertaining on any level at all!! Well, I am DEF not watching now…and anyway Downton’s on!
Just ban televising the Grammies…problem solved.
The institution of Television is stuck 30 years behind the times. Today the intenet is a festering cesspool of porn, profanity and every manner of the lowest common denominator of society. Why they bother this archaic sensorship is beyond me. Most 5 year olds today know all about the genitalia and the 7 words Carlin so craftily put together. There are no more secrets. You’re not guarding or hiding anything from the masses anymore. The internet has all but killed morality and sensibility in America anymore. So be it, give the people what they want. Note that I’m not necessarily complaining, but simply illustrating how outdated and backwards thinking Television is. The days of I love Lucy and the Cosby Show are long gone, get with the times. Television is becoming irrelevant.
Your comment about 5 year olds knowing all about what is shown on porn—-speak for yourself. It is still the parents’ responsibilities to protect their children from that, and most do. And in case you think that is over-protectiveness, just look at the animal kingdom; the mothers viciously protect their offspring until they are capable of defending themselves. Why can’t we do the same thing?
Because “defending yourself” is defined in social terms nowadays, not in the physical terms as it should be.
According to the theory of natural selection, humans (and all animals) exist only to continue their species. Until 300 years ago, the human lifespan was about 35 or 40 years. Females became reproductively capable around 12 or 13 years. Assuming the had kids during their teenage years, those kids themselves would reach reproductive age when their parents were in their mid 30′s. Then, like salmon, after the cycle was complete, the parents died. But today, parents try to “protect” their kids waaay beyond reproductively capable ages. Lifespans are twice the biological norm for humans because of medicine and science, and so the species is way out of touch with what evolution programmed for us. The fact that kids learn about sexuality earlier these days (because of the internet?) only puts back in place what once was the normal age kids learned about sexuality. I really see what’s happened in the last 300 years more as a religious thing. This country was founded by Puritans and other very religious groups, who were opposed to sexuality (except for reproduction) even in adults. That religious ferver became part of the culture and is so engrained now, that anything that bumps into it is regarded with hostility. Maybe it’s time that religion start taking a back seat to what the realities of life really are.
I think it’s fine that parents protect their kids, but it is WHAT they are being protected from, that is the issue. Being protected from violence and acts “against the village” are fine. But being protected from normal human sexuality or even nudity, is just not correct. I wouldn’t want my daughter looking at porn at 5, either. But I would have no problem with her seeing porn at 11. And 300 years ago, that sentiment would have been completely normal and culturally appropriate. The internet isn’t the villain, religious conservatism is.
Hollywood is always caught between the need for attention and the need to make that attention seem somehow important and meaningful. So, camel toes and moose knuckles really are the desperate need of the egos of the desperate stars, as well as a lapel pin to remind everyone they care about some damn cause everyone already knows about. Truth is these celebrity egos need such props to help them forget just how trivial their lives really are, whatever their salaries may be.
The lawyers made them send out that note. They can’t and won’t do anything like stopping people from doing these things, but they now have a CYA with the FCC.
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!”
When societal mores have plunged to base line, the slightest call to decency is met with howls and calumny. (Look it up if you need to.)
What I find ironic is that we can’t see nudity or partial nudity…BUT we can see people getting mauled, maimed beheaded kiled or whatnot and that is OK…..
They’re both wrong.
Amen! Finally someone who can think straight!
The truly sad part of the story is that the artists who finally win in an obscure category after years of honing their craft are barely mentioned in the ceremony. But, give me a 70 year old wrinkly rocker from Britain or some 20-something curvy bimbo who uses AutoTune on her vocals and we’re talking about some serious viewership.
Now all that is left is the ignorant rap stars grabbing themselves and b-list movie stars doing the intros.
I plan to go commando when I watch it from my mom’s couch. I hope that is OK with the network.
Its just CYA for any FCC complaints. They have no intention of policing the trash.
These restrictions are mild. A segment of the population is unlikely to let their younger children watch it or watch it themselves because of wardrobe concerns. I doubt very much that the network cares in the least from an ethical about some semblance of modesty. They only care about staying within the current cultural norms in such a way that they do not turn off a significant portion of the audience.
Damn…..That was the only reason to watch this stupid drivel. Oh, well.
Don’t watch this stupid show.
wouldn’t it just be easier to say “no apparal that draws attention”?? Pretty tough for actors, huh??
Trying to tell this bunch of folks to find some class is a great waste of time and effort.
Finally! Standards!!
Since when does the grammys and their dress codes constitute “burning issues of the day”, or have ANY bearing on what the government is doing overseas? Jeez… is there ANY issue today that isn’t going to be shouted down with, “…with all the killing in other countries being done in our name, how can we even consider this???!” /end mock outrage
It’s the frikkin grammys, not the Supreme Court.
