BREAKING: Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment have found their title character for Annie. They’ve set Oscar nominated Beasts Of The Southern Wild star Quvenzhane Wallis to play the role, in a film to be directed and produced by Will Gluck. Also producing are James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith producing through Overbrook, with Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Jay Brown and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith through Marcy Media. That was the role that Willow Smith was going to play, but she grew out of it during the film’s long period of development. The contemporized re-imagining of the Broadway musical will shoot later this year for holiday 2014 release. Gluck, the helmer who directed Easy A and Friends With Benefits for Sony-based Screen Gems, signed on last month. Gluck has been revising a screenplay written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical and its book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin. That’s based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. Wallis is up for Best Actress today–youngest ever in that category–for her cute as a button portrayal as Hushpuppy in Beasts Of The Southern Wild. She was six when she made that film and is now nine, but is even more adorable, if that is possible. She’s repped by ICM Partners. Here is the official word from Sony:
Overbrook Entertainment, Marcy Media, director Will Gluck and Sony Pictures Entertainment have cast Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, the star of Beasts of the Southern Wild, in the title role of Annie, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio.
Commenting on the announcement, Minghella said, “With the recent Academy Award®
nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star. She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”Annie will be released during the winter holiday season in 2014. The film is being directed by Gluck and produced by James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith through Overbrook Entertainment, and by Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, Jay Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith through Marcy Media. Gluck is currently revising the film’s screenplay, which was written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical stage play “Annie,” book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and on “Little Orphan Annie,” © and ® Tribune Media Services, Inc. The film is being overseen at the studio by Andrea Giannetti and Devon Franklin.
QUVENZHANÉ WALLIS’ favorite pastimes are reading, singing, dancing, acting, and playing her iPod and Nintendo DS. Her favorite TV stars/singers are China McClain, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus. Her favorite sports are basketball,
volleyball, dance and cheerleading. Her upcoming films include a role in Twelve Years a Slave with Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and director Steve McQueen.

And people still didn’t watch it.
A Black Annie from the Ghetto – very original!……………lol
Please tell me where in the article it says that the character is from the ghetto, you condescending bigot.
How is it that the most cynical, bigotted responders get to these comments first? You cowardly imbecile hiding behind the anonymity of a comment board. It must suck to live your life. Congrats to Q. She’s a class act. I’m sure she’ll knock everyone’s socks off with her performance.
I guess this is timed so every reporter on the red carpet will be asking her about Will and Jada Smith and Annie instead of her work in Beasts. Good for the Smiths for stealing the thunder from a 9-year old! I just hope Quvenzhane doesn’t end up in their scientology school.
Great choice to play annie. I hope she can sing though. If you’ve watch beast of the southern wild you’ll know why they want her for the role of annie. This girl is amazing. I hope she wins the oscar
HELLS YEAH!
Who da man?! Get em, girl!
I think she’ll be pretty good in this.
I HOPE SHE CAN SING TOO! This seems to be happening toooo fast, and I hope her family and agent have their heads on tight. She’s very mature, but I pray that she won’t implode in later life over all that’s happening to her.
I wonder if the producers auditioned others?
Quvenzhane Wallis is not a singer. One of the prerequisites of doing a musical, is having singing talent. This is ridiculous.
How do you know she can’t sing? Noboby knew she could act before “Beasts” and she was amazing. If you read the article it says one of the things she likes to do is sing. She could probably do as well or better than most other kids. And, to answer someone else, other young girls did audition for this role.
Good for her! Although I disagree with her nomination I think she’s as cute as a button. If she can sing she can be good Annie. But I hope she won’t end up as another Lindsay Lohan or worse, Jaimee Foxworth.
Well, this certainly got the racists upset. Yes, the world is changing racists and as time goes on, you will be seeing more and more people of color in mainstream roles that up to now have been reserved for white actors only. That was the whole point of ending segregation, making it possible for people of color to fully participate in mainstream American culture. But I’m sure your narrow-minded minds totally missed that point and didn’t see this coming at all. Oh well, its 2013 and not the 1950s and 60s. Congratulations, Quvenzhane Wallis! I wish you all the best and continued success in your career.
Fantastic choice.
As long as they don’t get rid of little orphan Annie’s notable red hair, I’ll be fine!
She’s really a blond!
Everyone should be happy for her! She delivered a knockout performance in BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.
Bwhahaha, suing someone because they didn’t get the part?! You gotta be freaking kidding me!
Question, can she pull off the red curls or will there be another color? Cute kid I’m sure she’ll be great! Wishing her all the best
Great for her! She gave one of the best and most raw performances I have ever seen from a child actress. She was my very first choice to replace “Willow Smith”. I heard a lot of snarky Race-baiting comments on the web when “Jaden Smith” was first cast as the black “karate Kid”. Which is ironic and hypocritical in itself seeing how “Ralph Maccio” wasn’t Asian.
And looked just how well that turned out “Jaden Smiths” Karate Kid grossed nearly 400 million worldwide and was a much bigger smash hit than the original. So Phuck all the haters!
The kid can’t sing. They are going to try to teach her or dub her voice. Sorry, I love the kid but it’s the sad truth.
It’s not going to work. A 9-year-old child delivering a purportedly Oscar-worthy performance in a movie specifically designed to manipulate Academy voters does not automatically translate into a big budget Broadway musical, and a remake of a remake at that. The most accurate comment of the night was about last year’s best actor from The Artist, whose name I don’t even remember. He was a fluky character in a fluky film, the ultimate one-hit wonder.
Sorry to disappoint ill-wishers but Quvenzhane Wallis not only has the lead role in ANNIE, she already has a role in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, due for release this fall, plus a role in BONESHAKER which screened at Sundance earlier this year. Wallis continues to play key roles in high-profile projects with multiple accolades for her performance. Why adults hold so much hatred in their hearts for a nine-year-old child, I’ll never understand. Or maybe I do.
I couldn’t agree more Donella and as for those who think she can’t sing they re going to get one big surprise in the form of she is a brillant singer.
