I put an asterisk in the title there because I can’t promise this will be a massive breakout from the market stalls of the European Film Market. But I will say that the story of a giant arachnid (à la Ray Harryhausen) terrorizing Los Angeles, and sold here by Epic Pictures, looks fun and also somewhat reminiscent of Iron Sky, a movie that kicked off its career here last year and went on to have a cult life. Big Ass Spider does not have Nazis on the moon as did Iron Sky, but it was just selected for SXSW‘s Midnighters section where it will have its world premiere and features such actors as Ray Wise and Greg Grunberg — and there’s even a cameo by Troma chieftan Lloyd Kaufman. As needed, I’ll report back during the week on the spider’s international bite. The trailer is below (with a short intro from director Mike Mendez):

Best title of the year.
Why would I pay money to see this when I can watch equally awful movies like those Sci Fi Channel atrocities from ten years ago (ICE SPIDERS anyone) for free?
How do you get FREE cable?
Looks awful. And sadly, a bunch of writers will be saying “look, my giant killer butterfly movie has a chance!”
Nope, it looks like terrific fun and has the best title of the year. And you sound like a douche spilling sour grapes.
This looks funnier than the typical Sci-Fi channel movie
Wait. You’re in Berlin covering THIS? Is Mike Mendez your nephew or something?
Sorry Mike but your spider isn’t nearly big enough to be called Big Ass.
Mike Mendez has long been an untapped resource in Hollywood. I first meet him in 1995 when he was up to direct Sleepy Hollow. Yes, THAT Sleep Hollow — the one Tim Burton eventually directed.
He’s always been tremendously inventive, fun to deal with and bursting with energy. Sadly, he’s been trapped far too long in the horror ghetto and needs a shot at the next level. I hope it happens for him.
If you didn’t want people to download your stupid ass movie, you probably should have made it interesting enough to go see it at the movies.
This looks great. And like something I’ll see in theaters opening day.
Mendez is one of the best cult talents Hollywood has to offer, and this looks to be a ridiculous amount of fun – much more innovative and knowingly humorous than any of those awful SciFi Channel films. Anyone who’s seen the guy’s prior work knows this will be worth checking out.
Charlie, if millions of people could steal a little bit of money from your paycheck each week with a simple click of a button you might feel differently.
That’s actually incorrect. You are not stealing money from his paycheck if you download the movie. If you download the movie INSTEAD of paying to see it in a theater, then yes it is costing the movie money. But if you have absolutely zero intention of spending your money on something, then downloading it isn’t hurting them financially because your dollars were never going to them anyway. You can get upset about this but you can’t argue the logic.
About time Greg Grunberg starred in a film like this. That guy is a great actor of comedy & drama. Can’t WAIT to see this. It looks like SO much fun. I miss this old style campy SyFy movie.
Man, that looks like fun! I will definitely watch it when it’s out. It’s something to watch with friends and scream the whole way through.
All I can say about this is that Grunberg was a good casting choice. Based on the trailer, if this movie turns out to be watchable in any non-ironic way, then it will almost wholly be down to his performance.
