EXCLUSIVE: Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol’s Paula Patton has signed with CAA. She had been repped at WME. Patton, whose credits include Deja Vu and Precious, makes the rep switch after completing Disconnect opposite Jason Bateman and Alexander Skarsgård (the film opens April 19); Two Guns opposite Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington (opening August 16); and the Fox Searchlight romantic comedy Baggage Claim, which opens in October. Her husband, singer Robin Thicke, is also repped at CAA. She continues to be lawyered by Jason Sloane and Shelby Weiser.

I always scratch my head when actresses with momentum do this… Hasn’t Paula seen what happened to Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon’s careers after they jumped to CAA?
Exactly my thoughts. CAA is not the best agency in the town. It’s like factories in China. When do these starlets finally understand that?
CAA is the best agency in town. I would die for them to represent me. The only people that think it’s like a factory in China are the bitter actresses who can’t get CAA to rep them. She is an amazing talent and she will get the attention she deserves. Go Paula, good for you.
There’s no shortage of opinions on this site whenever it’s announced that an actor has made an agency switch, ranging from confusion to celebration to invective. I’ve had some feelings of my own from time to time, god knows. But the truth is actor/agent/management relationships are very personal. There are some great agents at the big 4 and some lousy ones. As well as good agents who are bad people and vice versa. Unless we’re inside, there’s no way to know why. Sometimes actors get wooed, sometimes they get bored. They’re mercurial. They’re actors. Maybe her husband persuaded her. If she has momentum and buyers want her, she’ll likely not be hurt anyway. It’s CAA. They get their calls returned. They do well for some and less well for others.
But again. It’s always a personal choice. I doubt she’s looking at whatever happened Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon. She’s probably just looking at what she wants to see happen for Paula Patton. I like her. I’ll see stuff she does no matter who reps her.
Steve, are you surprised when WME signs most of their actresses from mid level agencies after the actress has gained momentum? One big difference between CAA and WME, is that CAA generally just poaches their real rivals, as they just exemplified. WME poaches from anyone and spends quite a bit of time chasing other agencies clients. If WME spent more time servicing Paula, and less time poaching clients from other agencies, she may have stayed.
CR, poaching and servicing clients are not mutually exclusive. It’s like saying you can’t be smart if you’re good-looking. You can poach and still service clients well. True, there’s only so much time in a day, but my experience is some agents can do more in an afternoon than others can do in a week. The life of mid-level agencies is that they break in new talent and commission them while they can. They dump or ignore those that don’t make it and often lose those that break out (only to get some of them back when they fail at the next level). If you’re a newbie, WME and CAA are probably not going to be the right place unless you succeed quickly or have an astounding amount of talent or heat. But this is all part of the agent eco-system. For reference, play Elton John’s Circle of Life.
Awesome! I guess this means we’ll have her in 2-3 years! Thanks CAA!!
Steve:
It could be that she may not have been getting attention at WME and felt CAA gave her what she needed in terms of representation.
But you might be onto something though…because both Witherspoon and Roberts have kinda fallen off the radar…
But, Patton can keep in house since her baby daddy is at CAA also…
I’m with Steve on this. She’s working constantly and building a nice career, but she jumps to the other mega-agency in town? Maybe. Only time will tell. But unless you’re at the very top of the A-list (Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone) I can’t understand why you’d want to be there. If she was truly unhappy, my sense is she’d have been better going to UTA or ICM where they would attach her to some of the excellent scripts their writers are producing. She’s not going to be one of the top 20 actresses on CAA’s list.
Is there a more beautiful actress than Paula Patton?
NO!
My thoughts exactly…
…….and this too shall pass…….
UTA would have been a better move for her at this point in her career. But I 100% understand why anyone would jump from WME.
Paula made a great decision to go to CAA. She is at the top of her game and that’s where she should be. WME spends too much time trying to sign other agencies clients instead of focusing on their own. “Billy” you’re clearly out of the business if you think ICM knows anything about packaging talent. ICM isn’t even in the conversation. Good move Paula.
Yes, good move, Paula. When a great piece of material comes along you will be the 29th call they make.
This girl is on fire in the biz and it is all due to Charles King. It isn’t like he doesn’t return phone calls or anything.
Long Live The DUKE!!
Wow !! Never heard of her. She looks and talks like the actress on TV show Eureka. OOPS!
