The cable company joins DirecTV and Verizon in tacking a special fee on to monthly bills that calls attention to the rising price of sports programming. Cablevision says it will charge $2.98 a month beginning in April, adding that it has not raised its basic TV subscription price since late 2010. “Unfortunately, the rising cost of programming has resulted in this sports surcharge, which is similar to those introduced by other TV providers,” says VP Bradley Feldman. Cablevision spun off Madison Square Garden, which has the MSG regional sports network, although the family of CEO James Dolan controls both companies. DirecTV said last week that it will expand the territories where it has a $3 a month surcharge — in part to cover the cost of regional sports networks — and charge current customers as well as new ones. “I believe the whole sports business model is broken, and that the only alternative that we have if we’re going to carry sports channels in these few markets that are completely out of control and unaffordable frankly for the average consumer is with some kind of a surcharge,” CEO Mike White said.
Here’s Cablevision’s release:
BETHPAGE, NY, February 21, 2013 – Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) today announced that it was following other television providers in implementing a Sports Programming Surcharge, reflecting the rising costs of sports-related programming. The new surcharge of $2.98 per month reflects only a small portion of Cablevision’s overall payments for sports programming and will take effect in April. Cablevision has not increased its cable television pricing since late 2010.
“We are very focused on the price our customers pay for our services, and the value we deliver,” said Bradley Feldman, Cablevision’s vice president of video product management. “We have not raised our cable television prices in more than two years, even as we have added channels, On Demand content, new TV to GO services and other benefits. Unfortunately, the rising cost of programming has resulted in this sports surcharge, which is similar to those introduced by other TV providers.”
The Sports Programming Surcharge will be applied to cable television customers subscribing to Family or Value packages or above. Cablevision is also implementing a modest $2-per-month adjustment to the price of its Optimum en Espanol Spanish-language package, which includes more than 45 Spanish-language channels. The rate of commercial cable television service offered through Optimum Business will increase by $4 per month.

and if your like me. You shouldn’t be charged over the hill prices for sports programming that you don’t watch. It should go both ways. Most people I know have never watched ESPN , but we pay for it through the nose
You’re absolutely right. If I tell these thieves to delete the sports channels from my service they sure as hell won’t do it. But they’ll charge for me having it and not wanting or using it.
Verizon FIOS is looking better and better.
Verizon already charges a fee for this very thing.
No one in our household watches sports — ever. Why on earth should we pay for sports channels at all, much less at an increased rate? Other premium services are paid for by those that watch them. Why shouldn’t sports be in this category?
For networks to secure exclusive television rights from sports leagues they must be able to afford it and create the largest audience possible. The truth is professional sports are marginally popular compared to how they are presented.
So now we’re paying this fee, plus whatever we pay already bundled into the monthly price of cable. I’m in NY, so MSG, ESPN..and all their Networks (ESPN2, ESPNU, etc), SportsNet NY are all part of an overall cable bill plus this fee. Sounds like a profit maker to me.
I say these cable and satellite companies treat these sports channels like they way they want to be treated, like premium channels. Separate them into a separate tier and charge the customers who want them. I guarantee that many customers will do that “add on package” of sports channels or upgrade to that specific tier which carries the channels. I have downgraded to an “economy” package offered by my cable company for the simple fact that the majority of the channels I watch are in that package, and you don’t lose all sports….you just don’t get to see a majority of the sporting events. In addition, there’s Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and on demand….plenty of options out there now. I have no problem buying the channels in a separate package, sell it the way the content providers price it – like a premium service
I don’t like sports, but COMCAST bundels TCM anf FXM with the sports channels as a “sports and entertainment” package – I’m paying for channels I don’t watch or want to just watch classic movies!
So rather than allow their viewers to opt out of programming they don’t want, they charge them extra for it. If they truly want to rein in programming cost allow their customer to opt out of programming they don’t want. Cut the funds to these welfare network, the go away, and then you don’t have high programming costs. Sure, some networks a few people like may go away, but if they can’t draw viewers then I shouldn’t have to pay for them.
They won’t go away the people who watch them will have to pay more than people pay for all HD and premium channels put together.
Any price increase on anything rankles me. But it’s inevitable that prices will go up. So relax, it’s not the end of the world. Look at gasoline. You’ll pay it won’t you? A tall coffee at Starbucks, nothing fancy, goes for $3.00. Complain if you want about the $2.98 charge for having sports channels on your cable line up and you don’t watch or want them. But the fact is there are lots of channels that you’re stuck with that you’ll never watch and that you’re paying for as part of the package deal you get. So complain on, you’ll just get acid indigestion over a lousy $2.98. And there are options to watching TV. And don’t expect congress do anything about it.
In 2004 I had Comcast. It was in the paper that pro-Yankees loudmouths were pressuring Comcast to carry all the Yankee games, or they would leave. It should had been as simple as offering YES, and charging those loudmouths an additional $10 a month. The deal Steinbrenner wanted was to shove YES down everyone’s throat, Comcast caved in, my cable bill went up an extra 4% because of that, over and above the 5% increase from January. The cost of YES was way over anything else on the tier I was on, so, it should had been a premium station. Today, from the grave, Steinbrenners greedy hands still picks our pockets.
I canceled my cable almost a year ago. I told Verizon I would come back when they let me pick 10 or so channels I watch.
How out of touch with their viewers these cable companies are to think that by raising prices for sports broadcast they are doing us a favor. I wish to heck that we could have Ala Carte cable. That would be the first thing I would drop. I don’t watch it now, never have and as far as I know never will.
With most cable systems now digital it would be simple to offer everyone ala carte programming. I’d be willing to pay a buck or two for the channels I actually watch versus being forced into packages with 30+ channels for the 2 I want. Won’t happen unless mandated by the FCC because too much money going to the networks per this article.
We got rid of cable 3 years ago because of stuff like this and the biased news slant.
Get Netflix anf a MAC Mini, wire it up to your TV and have fun.
Cable is obsolete just like newspapers.
TODAY I LOOKED OVER MY CABLE BILL AND GOT SO ANGRY. I DON’T LIKE FEEING HELPLESS SO I ATTEMPTED TO LOOK INTO VARIOUS WAYS TO CHANGE THIS. WHAT I FOUND IS – NOTHING. EITHER DOWNGRADE THE CABLE OR REMOVE IT ENTIRELY. BY THE WAY THEY ALSO INCREASED THE OPTIMUM CHARGE BY $5.00 AND WE PAY $1.50 FOR ADDITIONAL OUTLET FEE!!WHAT IS THAT???? BECAUSE I HAVE MORE THAN ONE CABLEBOX. THAT IS THE “DUMB” ANSWER I GOT. NOT ONLY AM I PAYING FOR THE BOXES BUT I AM BEING CHARGED TO HAVING MORE THAN ONE. I CAN EITHER CHOOSE TO KEEP WHAT I HAVE OR NOTHING. WHO IS WATCHING THEM? THAT IS WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OR WHO IS GETTING PAID NOT TO!
Time for Google Fibre.
My watching habits revole around: AMC, MSNBC, Discovery & HBO. Thats all I want to watch. I can live without HBO since HBO go is horrible. Otherwise I have Netflix to keep me engaged. Can’t wait for Arrested Development and House of Cards!
