EXCLUSIVE UPDATED: NBC‘s plan to revamp single-camera sophomore comedy Up All Night as a multi-camera sitcom has suffered a major blow. I’ve learned that series star Christina Applegate is leaving the Lorne Michaels-produced project, which is still being re-conceptualized and is yet to film any of the five episodes in front of a live audience that had been planned. “It’s been a great experience working on Up All Night, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors,” Applegate said. “Working with Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family. I will miss the cast, producers and crew, and wish them the best always.” NBC would not comment. Some sources say the network is still looking to proceed with the series and may be eyeing Friends alumna Lisa Kudrow as a potential replacement for Applegate, while others say the show is now dead. Meanwhile, Applegate is getting ready to reprise her role in the Anchorman sequel, which begins filming this month.
Applegate’s exit follows the recent departure of series creator/executive producer Emily Spivey as the show has experienced a lot of behind-the-scenes turnover since last May when original showrunner Jon Pollack left. He was replaced by Tucker Cawley who, in turn, was replaced by Linda Wallem when NBC decided to turn Up All Night into a multi-camera comedy after 11 softly rated episodes of Season 2. Along with the format switch, Up All Night is undergoing creative changes, including in the balance between family and workplace comedy, that have not been completely locked in yet.
At TCA last month, NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke indicated that the strength of the show’s all-star cast – Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph — was key in the decision to keep it going. “We know that that talented cast of actors, they’re not growing on trees,” she said, calling the multi-camera revamp “a bit of an experiment” but “we think it’s really one worth taking.”
In its original incarnation, Up All Night was a family comedy about new parents played by Applegate and Arnett, which was inspired by Spivey’s real-life experiences of going back to work soon after giving birth. Applegate sparked at the concept as she too was a brand new mom when she signed on for the project. The workplace element was expanded and switched from a PR firm to an Oprah-like talk show when Rudolph was cast as Applegate’s boss, and there has been speculation that the series will shift even further in that direction when it becomes multi-camera.
Up All Night was a noble effort — an unfiltered look at parenthood with a top-notch cast, which received mostly positive renews when it launched in fall 2011. But it didn’t quite click with audiences and, after so many changes to the show and its team that have taken it so far from the original vision, maybe it is time to let go.

Unfortunately, this spells cancellation in my eyes.
It seems Ms. Applegate has made a smart move.
Fortunately–I think you meant fortunately.
Yeah, this is the end of the show. It had a good run? It had a run. This is the end.
Stick a fork in it.
Up All Night is turning into that classic rock band with one original member left, cranking out the hits at the county fair.
I really grew to like this show – particularly late in season 1/last year when the show found it footing. I especially liked the single-camera aspect and their [Applegate/Arnett] home life – that home/stage setting that they were filming in was terrific, and then adding Maya to that home mix was fun to watch. I’ll miss the show, but we’ll see these folks on TV again down the road – a lot of talent there. Christina is a gem – anything she does always works. She’s wonderful. I wish her and the cast/crew all the best in their next endeavors.
NBC may have to scramble now [more so than already planned] for fall’13 – they are losing Office, 30 Rock – maybe more. They need to fill up their Thursday night schedule, and now, looks like ‘Up All Night’ may not be ready for fall’13 either (?)
Up all night was never gonna make it past this season either way
Agreed. Great talent involved, but this show’s been plagued with problems
There is no show without her. Will & Maya are great, but the show was about a working MOM. NBC should just cancel it then. But what do I know, I’ve only watched every episode.
This show was over when they increased Maya Rudolphs role to capitalize on the success of Bridesmaids. She’s a funny lady, but the show should have been about not Arnett and Applegate, not Rudolph.
Why bother producing those 5 episodes now? Just cancel it.
Didn’t this happen to her on SAMANTHA WHO? too (although I heard they just cancelled that show when they realized going multi-cam and/or gutting the money out of it was going to make the show suck). Really loved watching her with Melissa McCarthy. Alas, Applegate needs a better vehicle to hitch her wagon to. She can be funny, but she needs the right thing to be funny in–
Samantha Who? was killed by the writer’s strike of ’08. Can we get a reboot of that now that Melissa McCarthy is a big star and Jennifer Esposito is free again?
stop pushing this show down our throat.
ANCHORMAN 2 is the place to be.
Dear NBC,
This horse is dead. Please stop beating it.
And I was really looking forward to watching the reboot with confusion, disbelief, and schadenfreude. Now they’ll probably never shoot it.
Sandy Duncan’s agent should be expecting a call from NBC any minute now.
Wow, a Valerie shout-out!
It actually didn’t have a good run. It had a horrible run. I can’t see how it can continue without Applegate, but at this point, I would love to see it try. It could be one of the all-time greatest TV train wrecks in history. Juicy stuff!
With her gone, there is no show. It’s dead. NBC should just cut their losses and forget the multi-cam reboot.
Just curious – was she not under contract?
So what if she was under contract? That doesn’t mean she can’t leave – that just means she won’t get the money in the contract. Being under contract doesn’t mean a person is stuck doing something forever. Anyone can quit at all times.
True, but it’s called breach of contract, and people get sued for damages as a result, all the time. Could be it was mutually agreed and she was released, or could be that the changes are substantial enough that she believes that they breached or otherwise released her.
Perharps the fact the show had been completely revamped opened a loophole for her to leave.
Not even a fan of the show but uh how do they expect to move on without their lead? That’s a wrap.
What I got from this is that the show might be getting Lisa Kudrow to replace her. Move bitch move out the way! LMFAO!
If NBC was actually able to get Lisa Kudrow for this and promote her being in the show, the show might return bigger than it would have if Applegate stayed on. Applegate just isn’t worth it anyways, her name has dropped ever since Married with Children.
Now you got a star from Friends potentially signing on for this that’ll be huge. It’s almost as if NBC got lucky with her decision.
What are the chances NBC would get Kudrow?
As I’ve said elsewhere, if they wanted to stay in business with these guys, why not sign them to new deals? Along the same lines, why not put Kudrow in one of the many pilots it ordered for next season?
How pathetic and desperate NBC is to try and make this show work. Cancel it already you ruined it with your own stupid network notes. Every time you insert yourselves into the creative process you destroy it. Don’t you fools realize this by now? Stay in your office and pretend you are doing something important and leave the writers alone. You are not creative you are bureaucrats who pretend to be creative.
Sadly, networks never see themselves as the problem.
I love the way you said that!!
Time to say goodbye.
NBC ruined this show by making it multi-cam. It was fine the way it was before NBC toiled with it
Well, it was fine if you ignore the terrible ratings part.
Exactly.
Clearly CAA and Christina put this out to get their spin on things. Given that NBC is still deciding if they want to go ahead with the shows (with people’s jobs hanging in the balance), this was a really shitty thing for them to do at this moment.
Christina didn’t have issues with the new creative direction, she was terrified of being in front of a live audience with comic heavy-hitters like Will & Maya. It was cowardly.
She did Married With Children for 11 years and won an Emmy for Friends, so what was she scared of? That’s a pretty dumb comment you made ht
Terrified of being in front of a live studio audience? You do realize she was in Married With Children, and that Jesse was multi-cam too?
Not saying her timing isn’t shitty and she may have just a lot of people their jobs, but I find “she was afraid of live audience” a little ridiculous.
I’m actually wondering if she did this to help people be able to move on and find a paying job. As long as this show is in limbo, there are a lot of people that are contractually on the hook, but not making any money because people are usually paid per episode. With nothing being shot currently, everyone’s getting a big fat check for $0. By putting it out there that she’s done, she might be helping put the nail in the coffin so people can move along and find a paying gig. Just a thought…
What a tw@t! Wasn’t she in front of a live audience for, like, a decade in Married… With Children?
I love when people talk out of their a$$e$.
Ummm..she grew up in front of a live studio audience, why would it bother her now?
That’s moronic. Christina BEGAN in front of a live audience. Hello? Married with Children was on for 11 years!
Actually, Christina didn’t begin with Married… She began in a drama called Heart of the City when she was like, 4 or 5 years old. I have a bunch of episodes on 16mm film – old syndication copies I got from a local TV station when they cleaned out their attic. I had them professionally film chained to VHS back in the mid 80′s. They were pretty good shows and you could tell Applegate had a future in acting. I think she should try drama again.
Yes, because the one thing we know for sure is that Christina’s 11 seasons on Married with Children has put her a disadvantage over Will Arnett’s experience on Arrested Development and Maya Rudolph’s experience reading cue cards on SNL in working in front of a live audience
Seriously? You need to do some crafty bending in order to pull some of these comments out of where they come from
That’s a ridiculous claim. She did “Married with Children” for 11 years (in front of a studio audience).
^…the fuck?
Or, you know, she might have thought, “This isn’t the show I signed up for.”
This is probably the case.
Exactly.
Like others said, she starred in 2 sitcoms that shot in front of live audiences. Those shows account for almost 15 years of her life. On top of that, I had the pleasure of seeing her starring in Sweet Charity 7 or 8 years ago. She toured the country with that production, singing and dancing for a live audience as many as 8 times a week. If there’s one thing that I’m confident about, it’s that Christina Applegate is not afraid of performing in front of an audience.
Ridiculous post. Christina has been in front of a live audience many times before. And I like her a lot more than either Arnett or Rudolph, so without her onboard there’s zero chance I will be watching this show going forward.
Here I was really annoyed about the format change but still would have stuck with it. But if Applegate leaves I won’t even bother. How can she be leaving? She’s one of the main stars. They shouldn’t even continue if she does. I really enjoyed this show but it’s being run into the ground. I’m pretty sure they’ll just cancel it now. They certainly can’t replace Applegate. That would be ridiculous.
ht – Applegate performed in front of a live audience for a decade on ‘Married With Childen’ and a few seasons of ‘Jesse’. The show was NEVER worked and she’s smart enough to see it and is bailing.
The concept of this show doesn’t exist. It was weak and thus they couldn’t build a show around it…or even a decent title. Let it die and reboot a show around Maya’s character focusing on her staff.
