West Of Memphis helmer Amy Berg’s feature directorial debut Every Secret Thing is based on Laura Lippman’s 1994 novel and centers on two young girls who are convicted of murdering a baby and are incarcerated until they turn 18. Upon their release, children start to go missing, dredging up the mystery surrounding the original death. Dakota Fanning and Danielle Macdonald will play the 18 year olds. Diane Lane, who plays one of their mothers, and Elizabeth Banks, who plays the lead cop in the investigation, already were aboard the pic, which begins shooting March 25 in New York. Nicole Holofcener adapted the book.
Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman is producing with Frances McDormand, who optioned the book in 2010 and attached Lane. Executive producers are Palmstar’s Kevin Frakes, Merced Media’s Raj Singh and Stuart Brown, Hyde Park’s Ashok Amritraj, Likely Story’s Stefanie Azpiazu, and Michael Bederman. Hyde Park International is handling international sales at Berlin.

That Danielle girl is going to be a superstar!
That Danielle chick is a babe.
Which girl is Lane’s daughter? Other stories mention that the daughter is a “gifted liar.” If it’s Dakota’s role – and I hope it is – that will add some real heavy-lift spice to it, and, hopefully, give her a good shot at her best role since Lewellen in “Hounddog.” I’m thinking that the “gifted liar” clue may indicate a symptom of something far darker than that- maybe. Anyway, that’s why I’m interested.
Danielle Macdonald is going to blow everyone away with her talent. That girl’s time is NOW!
Daniella,
I hope so! I don’t like movies with just one star and everyone else looking like they have no business doing movies at all. Excellent performances across the cast does a tremendous amount for a movie. Even a character in a movie for only a few lines now and then can be quite striking and satisfying. One of the reasons I like “Hounddog” so much is the great acting from all the adults who were in it with Dakota. Anyway, this will be a great opportunity for Macdonald.
Macdonald is playing Diane Lane’s daughter. I cover the project for my agency, it’s a brilliant role!
A chick flick/Lifetime-movie-of-the-week type. Definitely not interested.
I doubt this will be a chick flick unless they intentionally wreck the plot. Love me some Laura Lippman. This book has stuck with me since 1994 (has it been that long?).
Thank you, Laura Lippman. I love your books.
Dakota Fanning, is a fantastic actress.
I hope they shoot at least part of the film in Baltimore. Baltimore’s neighborhoods are an integral characters in Laura Lippman’s books. The character drama might hold up, but the visual story-telling would not be authentic without them. I’m sure Hunting Hills would love to have the crew shoot the first scene there – it hasn’t really changed – just some speedbumps on Nottingham Road.
