Rules Of Engagement star David Spade and Rachael Harris (The Hangover) are set as co-leads opposite Sharon Horgan in Horgan’s ABC single-camera comedy pilot Bad Management. Written by Horgan and Holly Walsh and executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, Bad Management centers on a slightly self-centered female boss (Horgan) at a high-end luxury goods department store who finds her ways challenged when the boss’ son, Tobias Jr. (Spade), comes to town and makes youth and sex the new company focus. Harris plays Linda, a store employee who finally gives up on her long-time spray tan habit. ABC Studios is producing, with Kat Likkel & John Hoberg also exec producing.
CBS’ Rules, now in its seventh season, is unlikely to return, in part because producer Sony TV will have to make new deals with the original cast whose contracts are up this season. That made the core actors available for new series, with Spade and Patrick Warburton booking pilots. (Fellow Rules regular Adhir Kalyan also landed a pilot gig in second position). If both Spade and Warburton’s pilots don’t go and they remain available, there is a chance that Rules might be brought back but they are considered very slim as everyone seems to be moving on.
Earlier this season, Harris, along with The Office‘s Angela Kinsey, were attached to star to another comedy project, Dirty Blondes, which had a put pilot commitment at Fox. Coincidentally, the two closed for pilot starring roles within an hour of each other — Kinsey will play the female lead in the Fox comedy The Gabriels. Harris, repped by UTA, Principato-Young and Rick Genow, has recurred on Fox’s New Girl.

Oh, this sounds great, yaaaaahhhh…
Maybe they will name David Spade’s character David Spade—bc that is the extent of what he does on every show and movie in which he is cast.
Yeah, and it seems to be working out for him, doesn’t it?
I Love David Spade!! And I love that he plays the same role again and again and again…..!!! Hysterical in everything he does!!!
Two great additions. I wasn’t sure about this one earlier. I like Sharon Horgan, but it seemed like she was miscasting herself (a la A Minute with Stan Hooper), but I think With a good cast surrounding her, this should be a good show.
“…who finally gives up on her long-term spray tan habit.”
What an odd character description.
Well, I wasn’t going to watch until I read about the spray-tan thing. Now I’m hooked!
Love HUH! Hope this is finally the vehicle that allows her to shine!
Rachel looks terrible, and I didn’t know Spade wore glasses.
Congratulations Rachel,
Great job, well-deserved. I doubt Spade would remember me but he was amazing on Just Shoot Me the year I was a writers’ assistant there. Great casting.
This is now officially the must-miss pilot of the season.
Effin’ brilliant! Nothing says youth & sex appeal like 40-something David Spade! The Twi-Hards’ll eat this up!
Spade is funny in small doses. The show better has a great supporting cast or this show want make it.
I wonder if Paul Lee actually read his comedy pilots this year. ABC has spent three or four seasons looking for an internally-produced show they can turn into a self-sustaining hit by pairing it with Modern Family (which they pay a fortune for but don’t own) and the closest they’ve come is Happy Endings? What’s going on over there and why do the really good comedy writers hate it so much?
While this doesn’t sound terribly interesting to me, and I’d rather see her do more work like Natural Selection, I’ll have to tune in to see Rachael Harris looking fiiinnneeee. She’s on my notarized, laminated, top 5 card.
I am a huge Rachel Harris fan. She’s a real talent. Hilarious, beautiful and she can do anything!
I heard John Stamos passed on this pilot.
In what world is David Spade a “John Stamos” type?
Was Rob Schneider not available? Best news here is that Rules of Disengagement is finally almost finished. One of the all-time worst shows ever. Uh oh..that means Putty and his squint will soon be on some other wretched show. Spade should be cast on a Game of Thrones…..Peter Dinklage would eat him for breakfast
I have one note… Could Linda be just TRYING to give up her long time spray tanning habit? Make it a story arch and give the character room to grow.
Rachael Harris is a cultural icon and I love watching her on stage, (her Anne Frank was riveting at the Worthington Community Theatre) small screen, and at the picture show. I hope she gets an Emmy if this goes to series. I hear she has a cameo on next Wednesday’s debut of the unfortunately named Dukes of MELROSE on Bravo 6 March!
