EXCLUSIVE: What started as a cool teaser trailer on Deadline has turned into a full-fledged movie package that will be shopped hard at Berlin next week. Andrew Will has written and will direct The Prototype, a sci-fi thriller that will be produced by Will and Shawn Wallace of Variant Films, Sean Cushing of Cantina Creative and Max Leitman of Bandito Brothers. This is being put together in a similar fashion that the Bandito Brothers employed when it did Act Of Valor, the $12 million film that has grossed over $80 million. FilmNation is financing, and Glen Basner will be in Berlin next week selling international rights. WME Global’s Graham Taylor will be spearheading the domestic deal.
We run a lot of trailers on this site, and agency parodies that have gotten jobs and representation for actors and directors, but this is a new one for Deadline. Since we broke this trailer in June, it spread to YouTube, where it has gotten more than 10.5 million views and became a web phenomenon. It was around the seventh-most-viewed trailer on the site last year. Considering it was a trailer for a movie that didn’t exist, with no big stars to speak of, and with no marketing, that’s pretty good. But it’s also a pretty cool trailer. Here it is again:

Reminds me of Cannon days and before when Golam-Globus would do up a movie poster of a film that didn’t yet exist, and then go sell the movie. I like this way better.
So sick.
Looks Awesome!
Imagine how powerful a pre-marketing campaign would be if they captured email addresses and zipcodes… and facebook for everyone who really wanted to see this movie made. 1% email capture rate and you’d have 100,000 opt-in interested parties to market to during the making of and eventual release of the film. That’s a solid Core Fan Base/community that could be your free social media marketing machine come release time. It think there’s an interesting Sci-Fi business model in there to offset some of the risk.
pretty funny that you guys are taking credit for this taking off. we financiers were negotiating for this project (feature length version) well before you posted the teaser…
Looking good
come on… totally lame.
Congrats to Shawn — a good guy who’s been working this project for a long time. Well done, sir!
I remember seeing this here first last year. Thank you, Deadline!
As much as I enjoyed IRON MAN, IRON MAN is Justin Bieber and THE PROTOTYPE is Trent Reznor.
docsavage – I’m with you. If the trailer can’t fool us…. ; )
Don’t wanna cry foul cuz it’s probably not intentional… but this looks a lot like a small Marvel character called Machine Man. Even the eye pieces. Just sayin.
Or the fish guy from Hellboy.
Aaaaannnd this is the reason that FilmBreak.com exists
