CEO Bob Iger made the disclosure in an interview on CNBC. He says that Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on them — Deadline revealed exclusively back in November that they were getting involved — and they’re in addition to Disney‘s planned Star Wars VII, VIII and IX — the first of which is being penned by Michael Arndt and directed by JJ Abrams. No word yet on which characters are involved in the spinoff films. Kasdan of course wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, and Kinberg’s franchise credits include X-Men. Here’s the Iger clip:

And so it begins…:(
I’ve been saying for years Jar Jar needed his own film in order to better understand his roots.
Totally misunderstood…

Okay, so Ewoks aren’t an individual character, but they got their own full length tv movie. Two actually. AND an animated series.
My point in all the “This Happened” posts I’m adding through here, is that everything that everyone is moaning about being afraid will happen to the Star Wars franchise now has already happened, under Lucas.
So the question is: do you want more Star Wars, or none? And if you want none, you can ignore more anyways.
Still, it’s fun to complain, isn’t it?
Everyone is assuming it will be Jar Jar Binks or the Ewoks, but what about the young days of Mace Windu or Qui Gon Jinn or Lando Calrissian or Han and Chewie? Could be interesting.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ck you Disney.
Finally a movie about uncle lars
anyone else already dreading somebody other than harrison ford playing han solo???? get ready.
I would watch Jeremy Renner as Han Solo.
Yes, that’s right, dilute the brand as much as you can, Disney.
How about “Car Wars”, an animated film where the stars from “Cars” join Skywalker and Solo on outer space missions?
Careful, Bob, don’t overdo it. If you create too much supply, you’ll eat up all the demand. Remember what happened to “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”… you should, you were there! One of the many brilliant things Walt did was to force a seven year waiting period before the company’s hit films could be re-released. You have to leave people wanting more.
Hmmm…how quickly can we run a franchise into the ground…? Can’t wait for Jar Jar Banks, the cereal! How can we get Darth Vader to endorse skinny jeans? Yeah, let’s go scorched earth with the branding!

The Jar Jar Chronicles!!!!!!!
-_-
Awesome. This is what I have dreamed of since I was 5. Can’t wait to see these with my boys.
Same here, I love the Star Wars universe and can’t wait for this.
I’d rather see Star Wars on Ice.
As a long-time Star Wars fan, this is depressing. For new fans, sadly, they won’t know the difference.
Oh, fer cryin’ out loud…
Aww. You should have beat Disney’s offer to Lucas and then you could have done nothing with the property. Can’t really blame Disney for trying to make some money off their investment.
Like Star Wars movies are the only way.
to make money off star wars characters??? maybe not the only way, but they help.
the star wars movies are only a fraction of the entirety of LucasFilm
Rumored character is Yoda for one of them.
Just no TV. Don’t want to read an article about ABC green-lighting a pilot about Boba-Fett struggling to make ends meet while juggling a spoiled wife and bratty kids.
I think the TITANIC has just set sail for New York, I think Lucas dumped it (sold it foe mega $) because he’s out of ideas.
Yeah, that’s the way to do it, Iger, pay four billion bucks for a well-known franchise and burn through it in ten years time until people are sick and tired of the damn thing. But, hey, you got Disney’s money back in record time, right?
Ok, don’t nurture the property as it should be, right? It’s only about a cash grab anyway.
Looks as though the Lucas years may yet be the golden ones…
We’ll see.
you end your comment with, “We’ll see.”
But from the rest of the comment it sure sounds like you’ve already made up your mind.
You do know that Star Wars virtually disappeared between about 1988 and 1995, don’t you? Few toys, no productions, mostly just a few comics and novels. That’s why everyone was so pumped for Phantom Menace in 1999…hmm.
I’m already starting to feel Star Wars fatigue and they haven’t shot a frame yet.
People who are dissing this aren’t paying attention to who is making them.
Oh, they’re paying attention. It’s the same guy pushing for a 5th Pirates film, the same guy who wants 2 Marvel films every year and the same guy who’s pushing Pixar to crank out movies faster. If you’re a brand that produces, then you have to produce.
JJ’s gonna recast Luke, Leia & Han with younger pretty actors just like he did with Star Trek bwahaha! Now Star Wars fans will feel our pain. (Chewie will be a cub.)
oh you mean how they took the last guy to make a space movie remake and threw him another space movie remake?
they tried to do the same thing back in the day when they attached tim burton to the superman remake, thank god that one didn’t happen.
C’mon admit it, you always wanted to see a musical with the Cantina Band!
Your right! Willow 2!
Wait for the spin-off reality series… The Blue Milk Man: From Desert to Dessert, My Strange Addiction: The Dark Side of the Force, Coruscant Idol, Survivor: Yahvin IV, Hard Core Pawn: Tatooine, and who can forget the venerable Stormtroopers entering its 87th season.
I’m glad you’re not writing the spinoffs.
What’s the problem here? They’ve been doing these sort of graphic novels/comic books for years. And they’re usually better than the prequels. Let’s see what they come up with before we crap on it.
Like I always say: there’s nothing more relaxing in the evening than a smooth cigar, a Jar Jar Binks/Jango Fett buddy/cop action flick and a afterdinner mint.
