Emma Roberts has been tapped as the lead of Delirium, Fox‘s drama pilot from Karyn Usher, 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment. Based on Lauren Oliver’s bestselling book trilogy about a world where love is deemed illegal and can be eradicated with a special procedure. With 95 days to go until her scheduled treatment, Lena Holoway (Roberts) does the unthinkable: she falls in love. Usher executive produces the pilot with Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope and Paula Mazur.
This marks Roberts’ return to television, where she rose to fame as the teenage star of the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous. The actress, daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, had been focused on features for the past six years despite multiple pilot offers from the broadcast networks. Roberts, repped by CAA and manager David Sweeney, recently completed the New Line comedy We’re The Millers, Lionsgate’s Empire State and the indie Palo Alto Stories.

Enjoyed the script (though it seemed a little out of brand for Fox) but this casting choice brings it to a whole new level.
Definitely off-brand, more a CW type concept. FOX needs more sci fi, but they should be looking for male-skewing action.
Where did you read the script at? I know there are some online venues to read scripts, but I wasn’t aware you could read pilot scripts online so early.
That feature career never quite took off…
That is amazing Emma Roberts used to be the hottest young star, on cover of Vanity Fair and then signs with CAA and now doing a Fox pilot. Good work CAA.
A terrible starlet who was more focused on being famous then being an actress. Single handedly destroyed Scream 4. I don’t complain about nepotism. It’s a fact of life, but at least the Bryce Dallas Howards of the world go about it the right way with at least a shred of dignity.
I hope the show gets picked up and runs a long, long time so that she doesn’t suck the life out of any more feature films.
Hollywood demands we fall in love with her. “C’mon, guys, she’s Julia Roberts’ niece/i> for chrissake. What more do you people want???”
Emma is really talented and I think she’ll portray Lena well! But I had hoped for a new face, a not so famous actor, to portray Lena.
Love her since “Scream 4″ actually. Looking forward to see that.
Who cares about Emma, go Ush!!!
Yeah I am a fan of this series and still not sure how this is going to work it should have been made into a movie. As for Emma playing Lena I don’t think she will give the character justice but I guess will see when it airs.
Haven’t read it, but it must really be something special to get her back to doing television. This is a great get for Fox.
I really like the sound of this show. If it became a series I would definitely watch it. However, I don’t know where it will fit on Fox’s line up. It doesn’t seem to really suit them. I think it would be a better fit on ABC, I could see it pairing well with Once Upon a Time, or The CW.
I began to think of her as an actor after Lymelife. Good luck!
Emma Roberts is a never was in terms of being a “star”. Her film career was never going to take off due to her bland presence. Her best bet is to get a gig on a CBS CSI NCIS whatever shows. It worked for so many other bland female actors.
I agree she’s a bland presence… she does seem to be very impressed with herself though, for some reason.
I loved her performance in Scream 4! When she forces that knife into her shoulder?! Pure genius!
How is falling in love unthinkable? It’s a natural occurence so even if the government tries to suppress it people will still fall in love. The future society believes love causes weakness in society is that the reason it’s outlawed?
In “delirium”, the government (and the poeple, but I won’t tell you how they managed to make them think this way) thinks love is a disease, because indeed it causes weekness in society, so they found a way to make people immune to love, they can cure it if you prefer, I won’t tell you how, that would spoil everything. So, no, people cannot fall in love anymore after being cured. (But, in fact, the answer to your question was in the article :”love can be eradicated with a special procedure”)
Hum and as for Emma Roberts as Lena….I haven’t heard that much good of her but, who knows, maybe she’s going to do a very good job?
I wonder what the chances are of this actually getting picked up to series? It seems so off brand for FOX, but Emma Roberts is a pretty nice get, so I’m intrigued. I would definitely watch, so I hope it works out!
I’M OBSESSIVELY IN LOVE WITH THE DELIRIUM TRILOGY. ? THE THOUGHT OF IT BEING MADE INTO A TV SERIES MAKES ME SOMEHOW SAD.
Tsk. Damn it really. If it were a movie, heck, it would be a blockbuster hit! I’m pretty sure ’bout it. xD
This book series could really work well as a TV series…there’s so much material to work with. It could keep the series going for a full 6 years. Emma Roberts is a great casting choice, if you ask me.
There are huge risks making it into a TV series though! The pilot doesn’t get picked up or worse yet – the pilot gets picked up, but the ratings are low and it gets cancelled (this happens to a high percentage of new shows). With a movie, you are guaranteed to at least the first book made and get to see all the characters. We’ll likely get teased with 4-6 great episodes to see it die a quick death.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the first two books and can’t wait for the third, but I am concerned that the general TV show watching populations is NOT going to get this type of show – or even find it entertaining. It’s not the typical stuff we see on TV. It doesn’t even fall into the ‘Once Upon a Time’ or ‘Vampire Dairies’ type of genre. It’s a dystopian romance! Sure, it’s got some thrills and action mixed in there (which make the books really good), but it won’t be enough to get the attention of the ‘important’ demographic.
Whatever happens, I am really eager to see where this goes!
