Just four weeks into its first season, FX’s Cold War drama The Americans has been picked up for a Season 2 with a 13-episode order. “The Americans has quickly established itself as a key part FX’s acclaimed drama line-up,” FX president John Landgraf said in a statement. Debuting on January 30, The Americans stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as two sleeper KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. in the early Eighties. The show premiered strong with 3.22 million viewers, bettering debuts by fellow FX series Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. Ratings for the second week initially saw a steep decline but Live +3 data brought the show’s viewership up to 3.11 million viewers. Former CIA agent and Falling Skies scribe Joe Weisberg created the series and exec produces with Joel Fields, Graham Yost and Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank for Fox TV Studios and FX Prods. The first season finale airs May 1.

Glad to hear this — one of the best pilots in years, and the subsequent episodes have been strong. This show has the potential to be the next HOMELAND, and FX is making a case for itself as the best network on television alongside AMC/HBO/Showtime.
Incredible pilot by Gavin O’Connor and a riveting show since. Great writing and great cast all around. The leads are fantastic and Noah Emmerich is killing it. FX is really becoming a fine brand.
Excellent. Such a good show. NBC take note. Shows like this are great. Glad it it picked up!
Didn’t this show just drop 40% after the first episode? Who the hell is watching?
All pilot number are look-in numbers. This is not a show for the masses, that’s why it’s on FX and in that timeslot. It’s well crafted and getting better each week as it finds it’s legs. It took me a few weeks to care about the protagonists and now I do. I’m glad it got a pick-up for another season. Quality shows deserve a chance.
People with taste.
Who is watching? People looking for the best drama since Mad Men. Love the period dramas and so happy that there is something to watch other than Law and Order. I can’t wait to see it every week!
This show is just Prono, nothing ever happens/ If this was how the spies lived, they would not have survived, its very silly to think
this is real.
It’s TV. It’s not real.
Good move by FX. This show gets more riveting by the week.
FX could have cut their losses with this one.
Who cares! It is nice that a network is keeping a show on for a particle audience. Instead of keeping it all season, the run a mini-season, advertise their regular shows, hope they catch on. So instead of one giant hit, they have a bunch of little ones. Each different show attracts a different market/audience. Boom. There is your plan for success. Look at Sunny, Justified, Rescue Me. They all had short seasons and FX uses those shows to plug its network. Just like USA, ABC Family and their shows. It is brilliant. Plus FX doesn’t have to deal with the limitations of “Network”. Being cable, they can show more and get away with more, that is what people want. Playboy Club would of been a hit if on cable. Look how Southland turned around.
“It is nice that a network is keeping a show on for a particle audience.”
Yeah, just look at Terriers and Lights Out…
The Americans might not be a big ratings grabber but it is not nearly the massive flop that those 2 shows were.
Keep it up FX! More o’ this! Less of Anarchy.
i’m shocked at this. i watched the first 3 hours and could not find a reason to continue…total borefest…
Yeah same here. I started watching Southland instead.
Yeah. Watching a well done political thriller with a well scripted plot and complex characters is the freaking worst. I just want to watch multi-camera comedies with laugh tracks that are insulting to my intelligence and not have to think.
Thrilled to hear this and happy that intelligent, literate programming continues to be nurtured in some corners of Hollywood. Thanks for giving this a chance, FX.
I’ve watched all 4 episodes. There is not one character in this series I care for.
I’ve found myself very much invested in the main characters, but only in the sense that I want them to die grisly deaths. I was a cold warrior and find nothing sympathetic about them, even though the producers of the show have said that they want the audience to view them sympathetically.
Matthew Rhys is my new favorite. For that reason alone I’d like to continue with the series. I also am liking Noah Emmerich.
I really want to like this show. The acting is very good but I feel like the story goes nowhere. I’m in the woods… I’m in a car… I’m in a house… I’m in the office… And back again…
It would be a good show, if they cut down on the ridiculous killing, and cut down on trying to follow current news events in the 80′s. It just doesn’t work. That’s one reason I quit watching Newsroom, because trying to make a drama out of past news events is not entertaining, especially when we know all the facts already.
I’m still watching, but it’s sad, because the show is going nowhere, and sadly, Keri Russell, as everyone has told me, just cannot act. I don’t want to hate this show, but I know it’s not long for this world.
Another problem with the show was how the trainer raped Keri during that flashback. If the Russians were training her from young to infiltrate the US, she was a very valuable asset. There’s no way they would risk having her get pregnant.
Also, most of the audience, if they are well-read, knows that the real Russian spies are not super-soldiers, but more like snakes in the grass, waiting to gather information. That’s just what makes this show ridiculous.
Not to go off topic, but in what world is Southland a ratings success? Just did a .5 in A18-49, which for a show with a budget well north of $1 million/hour is just unsustainable.
Leave “Southland” alone! It’s the best cop show on TV right now. Hatosy, MacKenzie, Cudlitz and especially King deserve awards recognition. I hope TNT will stuck with it.
This show is smart, tense, thoughtful, and exciting. The characters are great, the chemistry between Russell and Rhys is fantastic, and the writing is just really darn good! I’m so happy FX is giving it a second season. It’s one of the two best pilots this entire season. And if it’s a “snooze fest” like some have commented maybe they’re just too young or unfamiliar with the 80s and the cold war with Russia. I think it’s amazing and I can already for see Emmy noms for Rhys and Russell.
Love the show, love the characters, love everything. Number 1 fan here
This has quickly become my “must see” show. I’m so excited that it is coming back for a 2nd season!
Growing up during the Cold War, this show piqued my interest so I DVR’ed it. I just started watching this series this evening and I am only 4 episodes in. I have to say, the pilot was a little slow, but did pick up and the show has steadily gained traction and speed. I find myself being torn between rooting for and wanting to like the the Jenning’s and hoping they get caught and wanting to hate them. I am glad to hear FX picked up a second season. These days, any show for the 30+ crowd that can elicit an emotional intellectual response and doesn’t make me feel like I lost a few brain cells watching it deserves a second season.
awesome show russell and rhys are great together their acting is the best on tv telling all my friends and family to watch.
I thought it was a little slow to start with .But I like it more and more .Rhys is great !! I actually had to check his bio today if he has something Russian in him .After 4 episodes he really like ???? ??????? .I am glad they renew it !
I was flipping through the channels and came across this show. I watched it for maybe 10 minutes and was hooked. I went on OnDemand and watched the previous 4 episodes in one night! I love it. It’s also better than the millions of singing competition shows and other reality programs out there…
Love this show! It’s intelligent and engaging
Best show to hit the small screen this year. Love it!
I haven’t arranged my TV viewing since I got hooked on “Lost” a few years back! But make sure I’m home to watch “The Americans” and rewatch epsiodes online…I’m old enough to remember the history of the ’80s and the episode of shooting of Reagan and Alexander Haig’s initial comments were spot on. I’ve always liked spy stories. Good show.
Usually I don’t care for suspense/crime but The Americans has me on the edge of my seat. Beats the reality show my the networks which is being saturated.
