FX has handed out a 13-episode order to The Bridge, its drama pilot from writers Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid starring Diane Kruger and Demián Bichir. Filming on the series, co-produced by Shine America and FX Prods, begins in April for a July premiere. It marks Shine’s first major U.S. scripted series since the 2008 acquisition of Reveille.
Based on the Danish/Swedish series Bron, which was set on the border of Denmark and Sweden, The Bridge is set on the border between El Paso and Juarez. It centers on two detectives — one from the U.S., Detective Sonya Cross (Kruger), and one from Mexico, Marco Ruiz (Bichir) — who must work together to hunt down a serial killer operating on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Homeland writer/executive producer and Cold Case creator Stiehm and novelist and TV writer-producer Reid wrote the adaptation, which the two executive produce with Shine America’s Carolyn G. Bernstein and Lars Blomgren of Shine Group’s Filmlance, which co-produced the original series with Denmark’s Nimbus Film. The Bridge co-stars Ted Levine, Annabeth Gish, and Thomas M. Wright; Matthew Lillard guest starred in the pilot directed by Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala).
“For years networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success,” said FX president John Landgraf. ”I’m thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code and they have done so magnificently. There have been great films set in that world — No Country for Old Men and Lone Star come to mind — but never a great TV series. This one is special. The setting, the writing, the direction, and the way it is brought to life by Demián Bichir, Diane Kruger and the rest of the cast makes for truly riveting drama.”
In addition to The Bridge, FX has two high-profile pilots that are on fast track for series orders: The Strain, from Guillermo del Toro and Lost‘s Carlton Cuse, and Middle East drama Tyrant, from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. FX’s latest original drama, The Americans, got off to a strong start last month before a major second-week drop.

I’ll try it for Ted and Matthew’s sake.
I would be interested in watching this except that is stars Kruger who I consider one of the most bland actresses that somehow keeps getting roles. Would have been better if Gish was the female lead.
Agreed! She’s like a wooden doll! It’s astounding to me that people keep casting her.. And how will she play an American cop when she has a clear German accent?
She’s really pretty though..
great script. real page turner. amazing casting, too.
cant wait to watch.
big fan of carolyn bernstein, and shine.
Let’s just hope it’s better than The Killing.
It’s a shame that no US network will air the originals. There’s a nice niche to be found in shows like The Killing, The Bridge and Prisoners of War.
Forget about the artificial scarcity of current broadcast and cable TV. Netflix should be snapping up the rights to those series, especially if there are American remakes, which makes the original even more valuable.
Just think of all the viewers who are stumbling across the UK version of House of Cards for the first time right now because of the remake. Search for one and you see both. Netflix should snap up every American remake, and the original versions too, and then make sure they’re linked so that searching for the American version brings up both. Netflix gets “credit” for both with the viewer and locks in subscribers.
Since broadcast and cable are not competing to get the originals, apparently they don’t give a hoot, Netflix should be able to snap them up for a cheap price.
TV (and often digital) rights to the original series are incorporated into US remake deals so other US networks won’t have the chance to air the original.
Far too many serial killer shows on the air. At this rate, there won’t be any victims left.
Thank you. Why do Landgraf and Reilly at FX and Fox think serial killers are so interesting? Why do they think murder is the only was to drive a story? Why is the woman always helping a man on their shows?
Because we’re burnt out on vampires and zombies.
I thought this show had serial killers who are vampires and zombies and lots of blond women who get tortured. Isn’t that the FX way? These shows are so stupid. What a waste of talent. And why is it that if a show was on in Denmark, Israel, Sweden it’s immediately ripe for US television? Are the networks that insecure that they have to know it was on elsewhere? It seems like cable and network no longer know how to develop original shows but just rip each other off and meddle.
Zombies, vampires, serial killers and murdered young women. What’s happened to the viewers brains?
Why do TV critics give this crap a free pass?
Loved the orig series ..and I w watch anything w Annabeth Gish in it!
I have no interest in this show. Count me out.
The script is pretty stale and predictable, but the cast is great. I’m interested in seeing how this turns out.
Demián Bichir AND Diane Kruger. Sold. Good to see Bichir get this kind of lead exposure.
The Danish series was great. I’m doubting the U.S. version will be up to it, but here’s hoping.
Shine America should count their blessings they finally found a format worth up selling. It’s the only way they will ever get a show on the air.
Agreed, she’s so wooden!
Great pilot — here’s to hoping it’s nothing like Cold Case.
Best pilot script I’ve read in a while, and a strong cast. Can’t wait for this one!
I have to agree with those that didn’t think the script was anything special. It also felt like an odd choice for FX, as there was nothing I read that I thought couldn’t/shouldn’t be on broadcast. I haven’t seen the Danish series, so there must be a lot there that isn’t presented up front –
Are you kidding? This script was a lot better than most of the trite the networks just picked up last week.
Sorry there were no superheroes or bitchy lesiban roommates in the cast. Stick to Fox for that schtuff.
You misunderstood me. I wasn’t saying what the networks do isn’t drech, just that this didn’t read like an FX show to me. I think this is a good example of what a provocative network broadcast show should look like.
Elwood is one of the biggest bullshitters in this town but damn if it’s not a very good script.
why serial killer? theres a big drug problem, why not focus on that?
I wish The Bridge TV series from Canada would come back
I seriously have to find a way to see the original version of the bridge. It must be the greatest television show ever produced judging by how many localised remakes it’s getting. I swear there are 4 different versions of this show being made around the world.
I seen The Bridge over here on BBC four and it was good but had a bland, ending to it.The Charater Saga was played well but I feel Martin could have did more, but I have only seen Diana in Tarantino movie. And by the picture it just look like a pale carbon clown like the u.s Killing remake.I still think the orginal will come out out on top but I will give it try Sky Atlantic is going to be making there remake shortly I understand.
Lol. True true but watching different shows top the other gets interesting. I love what’s going on with “the following” on fox. I feel like that’s a new perspective on serial killers. Shotimes Dexter is awesome unfortunately coming to an end. I think they played out every sinario, but its been interesting every season. For “the bridge” I’m surprised Keaton is the leading lady. Nothing against her BUT I think a different actress might be able to bring in viewers and keep them at the edge of their seats. We’ll see in July!
Just checked out a couple of episodes from the Danish version. The role she will play is a cop with asbergers. She could be perfectly casted.
Looks interesting. “The Americans” is an awesome show. I just hope Fx doesn’t tease us and cancel a good show a la “Thief” and the boxing one you just had.
I love the Americans. Thanks FX. I’m sure this will be great too.
If only ppl knew this is really gng on
