The bad news keeps coming for NBC‘s embattled Today. In the show’s home market, New York, Today was beaten by Fox station WNYW’s Good Day New York for the first time since the introduction of the Local People Meters in 2003. For the February sweep, Good Day NY averaged a 1.3/9 in adults 25-54 vs. 1.2/.8 for Today from 7-9 AM.
Additionally, Today rival Good Morning America, buoyed by the return of Robin Roberts, posted the largest total viewers lead over Today in nearly 19 years last week, 1.1 million. GMA (6 million total viewers for the week, 2.195 million adults 25-54) saw its most-watched week in more than 19 years and its best news demo performance in 4 years.

Karma is a bitch!
Rosanna Scotto for the win.
Greg Kelly is great too. I don’t know what they were thinking by moving him to the evening. The show was unwatchable without him. Glad he’s back.
ROSANNA SCOTTO BABY!!!!!
And this Monday between 6-9PM in NY’s Studio 8H, there will be a gala sendoff featuring the SNL band and fine Philly fare for the canned head of NBC News who helped bring about this Today Show mess.
Just curious, how do you explain the NBC network’s widespread debacle, from sunrise (the “Today” show, including the Ann Curry fiasco and its plummeting ratings) to sunset (the anemic nightly tv lineup) to the wee hours (the Conan mess and less than inspiring Leno reign) ? Is NBC just the victim of bad luck or is the network dealing with deep, rotten roots to the core?
Any takers hazard a guess on what’s going on over at 30 Rockefeller Center?
its bad Karma. You get back what you put out. And nothing good has been coming out of NBC in years. Lousy programming 24/7- terrible news hosts. Karma is a wonderful thing
1) short-sighted planning and lack of strategy in prime.
2) late night naturally takes a hit.
3) resting on their laurels and a longtime lead position in early morning.
Easy: they sold out and began programming for the East and West coast upper middle class viewer, and no one else. The overwhelming majority of the country couldn’t give less of a damn about these shows, and have long since bailed. Frankly the only show left on NBC worth watching is Grimm, and the network geniuses gave that a three month hiatus so we will see how many loyal viewers like me show up on the 8th when it starts it’s back half.
I gave up watching the Today Show completely some time last year. I started watching the show when I was in high school. Which was the tail end of Bryant and Katie. I Enjoyed the Matt and Katie years a lot. Matt and Meredith were okay, but this whole debacle with Ann Curry and a number of the personalities that contribute to the show, (see: Chuck Todd, David Gregory, and a few others) started to make it unbearable to watch. This is not the same show that I use to watch in high school. I hope that they can return to that someday, but I’ve, and I’m guessing a few others, have moved on.
Tina Fey to take over the Leno show. Brian Williams and David Gregory out; Soledad O’Brien, in.
Current weekday Today Show hosts all out; Lester Holt in as new Today Show host.
Brian Williams still has the top-rated network evening newscast, although Scott Pelley and Diane Sawyer are gaining, so he won’t be going anywhere.
Expect Matt Lauer to be eased out of “Today” this Summer, and replaced by Ryan Seacrest, who will leave “American Idol” at season’s end (although I expect that “Idol” will be rested for two or three years, to return in 2015 or 2016).
As for Lauer, NBC/Universal will probably give him a syndicated daytime talk/variety show beginning in 2014.
This probably won’t be the end of Seacrest hosting “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”: I expect the show will move to NBC so Seacrest can continue to host it. And to appease Carson Daly, who will lose his own New Year’s show, Dick Clark Productions will probably make him co-emcee of the Hollywood segments with Fergie, which will probably be moved to Universal Hollywood Citywalk.
It’s just a fact that Matt Lauer’s backstabbing of Ann Curry and her subsequent public lynching has killed The Today Show. Oh NBC might spin it ’til the cows come home, but that’s just the plain truth. Today has been in a freefall ever since Ms Curry walked the plank on national TV. Mr Lauer should be the first to go if they have a prayer of a chance to make a come back. His arrogance knew no bounds and now he should pay the highest price. Karma is a bitch indeed.
Matt Lauer’s arrogance makes the show impossible to watch. After the whole Ann Curry deal that just makes it worse and the fact it’s published he makes over $20 million. I can’t stand him or to watch the show. He needs to go before things will ever turn around.
I too have started watching CBS quite a bit. Not everyone is talking at the same time. Having said that, lets not forget that the today show ratings started their downside while Ann Curry was still there.
I didn’t like Ann Curry as co-host but thought her ouster was demeaning and wrong. Samantha is unwatchable and in light of Matt Lauer’s participation in getting rid of Ann, I’m no longer watching after doing so for years. In addition, I think NBC should release Ann from her contract so she can go elsewhere; not doing so is petty and continues to give NBC bad press.
This isn’t restricted to New York.
In many markets, the most-watched TV show on weekday mornings between 7 and 9 isn’t “Today” or “Good Morning America”, but a local morning news shows (usually, but not always) on a Fox-owned or affiliated station.
Was the problem really Ann? I don’t think so.
