UPDATED: Here is what Greg Garcia said about the My Name Is Earl gag on Raising Hope. “To be fair, I didn’t write the joke. But the writer who did knew I would leave it in. Anyway, it’s all water under the bridge. Just a funny way to end a scene.” There will be a lot more Earl references in the February 26 episode of Hope, which stages a reunion of the stars of the NBC comedy — Jason Lee, Jaime Pressly, Ethan Suplee, Eddie Steeples, Nadine Velazquez and Abdoulaye N’Gom. “There’s a lot of Earl jokes throughout,” Garcia said. “I enjoyed it very much. Not sure if anyone else will.”
PREVIOUS: Wondering whether Greg Garcia has gotten over NBC’s unceremonious cancellation of his comedy My Name Is Earl almost four years ago? Here is a clip from this week’s episode of Garcia’s latest series, Fox’s Raising Hope, in which Burt (Garret Dillahunt) kicks the NBC President (Graham Clarke) in the nuts over the My Name Is Earl cancellation. Earl, which was put on the air by Fox chairman Kevin Reilly while he was at NBC, was cancelled by his successor, Ben Silverman, in May 2009 after four seasons. Silverman himself was let go from NBC two months later.

In my mind, Garcia’s Emmy winning speech for Earl will always go down in history as one of the best, most hilarious and honest speeches ever.
Amazing that TBS found the money to save COUGARTOWN this year but were unable to pick up EARL.
And they badly needed those 13 episodes to make a decent syndication number.
Blame also falls to the studio. Every dollar they ate would have come back tenfold in syndication. They had 96 episodes when they got the axe.
96 is a decent number for syndication, and it was syndicated on local stations. It had weak ratings on NBC and in syndication.
And Kevin Reilly didn’t save Earl either, despite FOX having no viable sitcoms at the time.
Get over yourself, creep. NBC is a classy organization. It’s been four freaking years, can you say carrying a chip on your immigrant shoulder? Of course I may be jaded since I have met Jay Leno at a car show and he complimented me on my 1967 Corvette. And unlike the “My Name is Earl” guy Jay knows good humor.
Greg is an “immigrant” creep? Wow. Think about it you xenophobic loser, whose life’s highlight was getting a compliment Jay Leno at a car show. “Oh my God! Jay liked my ’67 Corvette. I AM SOMEBODY!!!!”
One thing that America certainly doesn’t need to import from Mexico or anywhere else is talentless, unfunny television writers/producers/executives etc. We have a huge supply of them here at home and should be leading the world in their export; it could possibly get our economy back on track!
My Name is Earl was a terrible show (just like everything else on NBC and the other big networks). So this guy makes a skit about kicking the NBC pres (doesn’t look too much like Ben Silverman to me) in the nuts; wow how creative and sophisticated. He should be glad that he has a career and that his stupid show even got on the air!
LMAO, terrific!!!
…and my reply is to Gregs post. “My Name is Earl” was a funny show, for anyone who has sense of humor that is.
C’mon — they’ve clearly got PSSD: Post-Silverman Stress Disorder. This is therapeutic.
Greg Garcia was born in Arlington, Virginia. Sorry to disappoint, Frank and Bill H.
I lied. I’m actually quite pleased about it.
I don’t care if he’s from mars, he stinks!
It was my impression that “Earl” was cancelled because it was not very popular. Is that not the case?
The show was really good until the end of the second or third season when Earl went to jail. It went off the rails then.
It became very obvious that the show had no long term plan for where to take the show. It just got unwatchable. Ironically, the last few shows got it back on track, but it was too late. The audience for what had become a relatively expensive cast/show was just too small. And once an audience leaves, they don’t come back.
Agreed. I was going to post and say something similar, but you beat me too it.
I blame Greg Garcia. He did not learn the lessons given to him, and many who came after him have yet to learn the same lesson….
STOP TRYING TO FIX WHAT ISN’T BROKEN!!!
Earl was great and heartwarming when he was doing the list. Not only did you laugh, but more often than not you left the episode feeling good. Then, they got stupid with Earl going to jail and the whole coma thing and it drove so many people away that, by the time they got back to the list, it was too late.
Another problem is that there was far too much emphasis on the ancillary characters, namely Joy and Darnell. Two characters which should have been left in the background where given center-stage every week, and I think that also hurt the show. I remember an episode (can’t remember which one) where Earl is talking to Randy in a firm way explaining that Joy and Darnell were a part of their lives. To me, I took that as a lot of people feeling the same way I did about them and complaining about it, and that was Greg Garcia trying to put me in line. That rubbed me the wrong way, and I never forgot that when I tried to watch Earl from then on out.
What ended up being the cliffhanger was my last episode regardless of whether or not the show was renewed. The whole thing with Geraldo and the nose in the floor or whatever…horrible.
Really? My Name is Earl, along with Raisin Hope, are terrible shows. I can’t believe My Name is Earl lasted 4 seasons. Just an awful show.
Frank?! That Frank?! I can’t believe we haven’t spoken since the local Minute Men rally. Good to see you still have that amazing sense of humor. Especially about “immigrants”.
Let’s be honest: ‘My Name With Earl’ was an obnoxious, grating, unfunny show. It was creaky and annoying from early on in season one. (The pilot was original only to those too young to remember ‘Raising Arizona.’) And it just kept going, and getting worse, spinning its wheels in the muck. (Yes, it would have made money on syndication, but purely in terms of quality, the show was dreck.) So let’s stop the phony angst over the show’s cancellation. Hate Ben Silverman all you want, but this show was garbage and had long lost its prime audience.
Look at you, acting as though your goddmamn opinions are “facts”
Anyone notice the Yes, Dear bungalow in the background? Anyone at all? Hello? Is this thing on?
Garcia is an incredible talent a great guy. I certainly hope the immigrant comments are written by friends and colleagues as a gentle jab and not real xenophobia. Either way, ANDELE!
Ok idiots, here’s the facts for you so you can finally shut up and stop bitchin back n forth like 15 yr old girls: EARL was cancelled because NBC was going down and the president sucked and was getting fired because he lost sight of what mattered. He was too concerned about himself to pay attention to his network and what he had. The 5th season of EARL meant that NBC was gonna have to take over the cost from the studio and they were going broke from stupid decisions that had been made. Therefore, NBC had to drop all shows they didn’t already own and only keep the ones they did. As Garcia said before, you can’t be upset about gettin kicked off the titanic! And btw EARL was the reason the shows they kept even had ratings! EARL was used by NBC as a lead in to those shows because they gave them a lead in audience and ratings that kept them on the air. So go to bed knowing EARL will always kick ass. Ha!
TV shows, like music, will be a matter of taste. My whole family loves Earl and loves Raising hope. When you consider scripted television is pummeled daily by trash like Honey Boo boo, I think we need to overhaul the ratings system entirely. It obviously has nothing to do with quality or entertainment value. People should just accept that the kick in the nuts was a funny inside joke, and leave it at that. My family laughed out loud.
I’m a bit suspicious of the comments on here that are xenophobic and full of obvious hatred. Where’s that coming from? why do you care? its as if you were related to someone who works at nbc.
I love anytime the casts of My Name Is Earl & Raising Hope come together! Like many fans, I miss My Name Is Earl very much! I also love the playful jabs at NBC for the premature cancellation of “Earl”! I hope to see many more episodes of Raising Hope including the cast of “Earl” if for no other reason it’s “comedic gold”.
Jay Leno is the least funny talk show host. He must have dirt on someone high up at the network because why he gets that salary is beyond me. It’s sad that his lame jokes are considered funny by people like you.
My Name Is Earl and Raising Hope are great shows! I have no idea where Garcia is from, and it doesn’t matter. He’s talented! If you think about it, at least one person in your family was an immigrant. Let it go. And find a better idol to worship besides Leno.
I LOVE how you people can criticize Garcia, arguably one the most talented and nicest guys in Hollywood, anonymously from your parents’ basement. Maybe instead of bashing him, you should work on that script you’ve been trying to sell for the past 15 years. Bashing someone who is clearly more talented than you doesn’t put you any closer to your own goals.
My Name is Earl was an EPIC show. It is one of the few shows on TV that made people want to BE GOOD. If you do good things, good things happen… if you do bad things, bad things happen. Not only was it a great premise for a show, but it outlines how people should act.. or how people would act in a better society. Raising Hope is another great show with many life lessons scattered into its hilariousness. If it is really America’s opinion that My Name is Earl had no merit then I have lost all faith in the American people. THESE ARE SHOWS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD AND WANT TO DO GOOD THINGS! If you can’t get on board with that then I hope you get hit by an old school big body GM vehicle driven by Ol Lady Karma… oh and by the way… My name is Matthew, I’m just trying to be a better person.
I haven’t watched Raising Hope, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about it from people. My whole family also loved Earl and I really wish they would bring it back. Perhaps if it got back on track from the last season. (Although after Raising Hope’s pilot episode re: Earl finishing the list, I’m not sure what they would do with the plot.) You don’t have to like the show, but don’t be a racist brat about it.
I think as MANY people do that My Name is Earl was a great show and Raising Hope has potential to be a great show also. The ratings prove it!
To the dude that worships Jay Leno-
Try Letterman on CBS if you want to see someone who is really the best at his craft. Of course he might not kiss your tail pipe the way Jay does! He doesn’t have to!
I loved My Name is Earl..a great show you can enjoy with the family..sure it had stupdi humour but certain shows require fans with a certain taste me and my family enjoyed it very much..the show was funny and to the younger people who watched it gained a sense of responsibility..the show had a great message to teach people..` Do good things,Good things happen “..Live..Appreciate Life..Laugh..Love..the show had a great cast and soo many great elements..bring Earl back!…
I agree with that. This twat is posting his opinions as evidence of the shows cancellation. This show was hilarious, in MY opinion. But my opinions of shows are not evidence of their cancellation, as I think there are several funny shows still being aired on TV. I just can’t control which ones they cancel. Unless we start petitions to bring them back, which has happened several times!
Petitions don’t work. For petitions to work, you have to show someone who cares. TV networks have firmly and abundantly established that they don’t care in the slightest what viewers think or want.
Don’t get me wrong…they SHOULD care, but they don’t. The TV industry is the bizarro world of business. In pretty much any other industry, if you disrespect the masses and disregard their wants you’ll soon be gone. In the TV industry, this is exactly what they do and they actually prosper. I don’t understand this, and I never will.
