Another long-time executive from Oprah Winfrey‘s inner circle is out. After a 18-year stint as president of Harpo Films, Kate Forte was let go today. While the company continues to have a couple of projects in development at HBO, where it has been under a deal since 2008, Harpo Films has little to show for its efforts in the past five years — its last projects to reach fruition were the 2007 movie The Great Debaters, one of only two features produced by the unit, and 2007 ABC telefilm Mitch Albom’s For One More Day. Harpo Films is a vestige of old times — it was active in the broadcast movie business, doing six films for ABC between 1997-2007. But the demand for long-form projects, especially on the broadcast side, has dried out. And now the Los Angeles-based Harpo Films will de facto fold. As part of a restructuring, its larger sibling production company, Chicago-based Harpo Studios, overseen by OWN presidents Erik Logan and Sheri Salata, is launching a scripted division, which is expected to absorb some of the staff of Harpo Films. Likely based in Los Angeles, its focus will be scripted series, an area that has been growing in recent years as more and more cable networks enter the field. That includes Harpo Studios’ main client, Winfrey’s OWN, which is venturing into scripted series with a comedy and drama from Tyler Perry set to debut later this year. The move comes shortly after Winfrey switched agencies, leaving CAA for WME. Forte’s departure, first reported by Variety, comes exactly a year after another close Oprah confidante, OWN’s EVP Lisa Erspamer, was let go after 15-year tenure.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

If you haven’t made anything significant in five years with Oprah backing you, then you should leave because you have no idea how to make a movie.
How could she get anything made – she spent all her waking hours trying to get her no-talent boyfriend, Lloyd Kramer (Liz & Dick), a directing job.
Now that WME is advising Oprah her business will have an amazing new chapter. CAA doesn’t do TV very well compared to WME.
CAA, WME, UTA, ICM… combined COULD NOT help Oprah in TV. That creepy staff of hers thinks they are better than everyone else. The only good news is Kate Forte is out … one less giant ego on the Oprah titanic. Did anyone know Kate’s husband directed that horror movie on Lifetime “Liz and Dick.”
I guess they will be making vampire TV shows soon so they can be successful.
Bad bad people. They all deserve what they get. Ms Forte should have been fired years ago. She has made tons of money, used Oprah’s name to get ahead and has done nothing except apply make-up. Oprah is Satan. They will meet up again in hell.
Hey ‘LMAO,’ you seem to know what you are talking about. Why is Oprah ‘Satan’??! I’m just curious why you say this – as I’m sure you have interesting reasons. I’m not criticising your statement, just want to know more. Do tell!
I’ve heard OW & KF originally bonded over a shade of lipstick.
It’s reassuring when I read that someone else knows the truth about these people. So thank you.
Oh no. Does this mean that the watershed important story of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy will never see the light of day? How will untold billions get uplifted the Oprah way with her eternal message of Oprah, peace, love, light, and Oprah? (Full disclosure : Loved “The Great Debaters” though. It’s a shame this woman loyal to a lunatic is getting bounced by a desperate egomaniac who can’t see that she alone is the problem. People are onto her. They don’t like her anymore. Lance Armstrong. What an idiot. Appearing with Oprah as a ratings-grab for her turned into a global media and cultural double negative that will probably serve to seal his fate.)
It’s true that Lance Armstrong’s appearance was a colossal mistake for him – and will probably go down in history as one of the great image-rehabiliation-attempt fails – but you can’t honestly blame Oprah for this. It was a great ‘get’ for her, and she was fine (if a little bit mechanical) in her part. He would have likely screwed things up just as bad if he had talked to Diane Sawyer, or Katie Couric, or whomever. Makes no sense to blame Oprah here, though.
It’s true. Since Obama she’s no longer experienced as a trustworthy broadcaster. She gives off a permanent vibe of Kool-Aid agenda. So being with Chicago Rahm’s brother makes sense. La Famiglia and all that. Do I need the real St. Anthony to be any more genuinely clear?
Winfrey needs to dump the vast majority of her higher level and/or programming staff. They do not compliment the launch of a network and do not have the creative scope to help achieve this. The Tyler Perry deal was a HUGE mistake as the brand has been narrowed and compromised. Winfrey needs to jump ship and save her name/stick to specials.
All the jealous psycho Oprah haters are out in force on this message board. The people who criticize Oprah for trying to uplift others are the same people who themselves do absolutely nothing for anyone. Also, why criticize Oprah for interviewing Lance Armstrong when any news program would’ve loved to have had that interview and everyone was interested in it. She’s a broadcaster, interviewing notorious people is how ALL BROADCASTERS get ratings. It never fails that people irrationally hate Oprah for doing the same thing that everyone else does. She’s no more of an egotist than every other Hollywood superstar and white men start cable networks all the time and no one spews venom at them for it. Interesting.
Kate Forte was the absolute worst. The Harpo deal with HBO, putting Forte in business with Len Amato, was as wrongheaded a partnership as ever there was one. Rob Schneider being hired to act opposite Olivier, Terrence Malick directing Honey Boo Boo, etc.
That company was doomed the minute Oprah turned her energy to OWN. Kate has great taste. Rooting for her to finally spread her wings somewhere else.
Kate is a very classy lady but that does not make her a player. I think she had a nice run with Oprah and this probably closes out her career. It happens to everyone eventually.
Makes little difference whether Harpo exists or not as they had absolutely no impact on the landscape over the last several years. Basically a vacuum on an island that used Oprah’s likeness for influence but gained no advantage because Oprah didn’t have any real investment in what went on there. So nothing happened but development that never gained traction. Closing it only confirms what it never was.
