Set in 1961 London, Breathless is a six-part drama created by Paul Unwin whose credits include British series Casualty and Combat Hospital. ITV has just commissioned the ITV Studios production that follows the lives of a group of doctors and nurses in a gynecology ward at a period when Britain was on the brink of the ’60s revolution. Smash‘s Jack Davenport stars as Otto Powell, a brilliant and charismatic surgeon who believes he can make a difference to women’s lives. Otto and his elegant wife preside over an ensemble of characters, with more cast announcements to come. Unwin will direct the first two episodes. His co-creator is Peter Grimsdale, who will also script with Simon Tyrell. Breathless is produced by Jolyon Symonds; ITV Studios’ Kate Bartlett will executive produce with Unwin. Shooting starts in April. ITV Studios Global Entertainment is handling internationally.

The medical series is not dead. Network TV doesn’t understand the drama is in the story and a charismatic star like this one. No special powers. it’s life and death all the time. That’s why House and ER were great and why the US will be ripping off this show next season. So excited to watch this.
Wish American Network heads weren’t so out of touch with what drama is. The Surgeon General at CBS? That will pack them in.
I LOVE THIS IDEA! WONDERFUL. Why do the Brits still understand what audiences want? It’s because their execs unlike American TV execs live in reality or don’t govern through fear. Paul Lee will be buying the rights to this tomorrow. Watch. Or ripping it off like CBS did with Elementary.
This show sounds great, and I like Davenport. Any chance this will ever air in the US?
But thank goodness for you, though, right? You and your infinite wisdom and generosity to set all of America straight. That’s quite a mission. Just remember that for every one hit the UK exports to America there for 20 more the other way around. Are there some duds? Sure, but to fault America on adapting something from the UK is ludicrous when the track-record of bringing over or adapting shows from the US to the UK is at the rate it is. Just look at your post: What should have been a positive comment was just dig after dig on a completely different subject. Glass half empty much?
Does this mean Smash has been canceled but it’s just not official yet?
NO! I don’t want Jack Davenport to leave SMASH! He’s the reason I watch the show. What is ITV? I’ve never heard of it.
