Jacki Weaver, an Oscar nominee for Silver Linings Playbook, is set to co-star in the CBS/Sony TV single-camera comedy pilot The McCarthys. Written by Brian Gallivan, directed by Fred Savage and executive produced by Will Gluck, it revolves around an Irish-Catholic, sports-crazed Boston clan and the gay son whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. Weaver, repped by ICM Partners and Elevate Entertainment, will play the clan’s loving mother Marjorie McCarthy, who has no filter and loves having her gay son keep her company when her husband (Jack McGee) and other kids are off coaching basketball games. This marks the first U.S. series gig for Australian-born Weaver, who has landed two Oscar nominations in three years. She was also nominated in 2011 for Animal Kingdom.

What a get for CBS! A very recent double Oscar-nominee and fantastic human being. Not many people know that but Jacki is kind of a gay icon in Australia. Now I hope it’ll go to series.
Love her , 1s saw here in Animal Kingdom , which also had in that cast Joel Edgerton & Guy Pearce.
Horrible idea – this should never be produced. Didn’t CBS learn their lesson from the “Partners” fiasco this season? CBS viewers will NOT watch this.
Huh? Other than a gay character, these projects are nothing alike. Homophobic much??
That’s not why Partners failed. It failed because it was some of the worst writing ever, and the laugh track may have set a new record for loudness. It had horrible stereotypes of gays, Jews, women and Hispanic people IN EVERY EPISODE!!!!!! What’s not to like?
Couldn’t happen to a more gracious actor. All the manic, self-obsessed, untrained young actors in Hollywood should study the Playbook of this woman’s career. Stage and film and improved skill – then fame. Not the other way around.
Very smart move for her. If it goes, she’ll easy get Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe nominations.
