Janet Montgomery, one of the breakouts of last pilot season with her starring role in CBS’ Made In Jersey, which helped the project land a series pickup, is set as the lead of another drama pilot, ABC’s gothic soap Gothica. Set in the present day, the ABC Studios/Mark Gordon Co. project weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. It centers on Grace Van Helsing (Montgomery), a Pulitzer prize winning journalist from New York who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper. Dorian Gray (Chris Egan) provides her with the $20 million she needs to retain control of the paper, and she was romantically involved with Victor Frankenstein (To Ellis) years ago. British actress Montgomery, who was pursued for multiple pilots, is repped by UTA, Anonymous and UK’s Hamilton-Hodell.

Love her. Great casting.
Man, they are casting this pilot right into the ground.
Seems that way to me, too. Audiences hated her in Made in Jersey. Which has to make one wonder what exactly it is that Montgomery brings to the table. Must be pretty special considering that none of the American actresses could measure up.
If you have ever been in the room with Janet when she auditions you would understand why she gets cast. She is prepared, has made a strong choice, she’s committed, and she is very, very appealing.
Good for her. Yet the audience won’t care UNLESS that char Grace van Helsing is a bitch on wheels they’ll love to hate. Then Montgomery is absolutely perfect for the role. This tactic worked for at least one movie actess I can think of.
forgot to add: IF she can actually bring it. Not convinced b/c of MADE.
OTOH Egan as Dorian Gray is a disappointing choice, so my expectationas are low.
She’s fantastic. I just wish they’d make the character English so she could use her real accent.
I second that.
The character is from New York so we’ll be treated to another fake accent, oh joy.
But she has a good American accent so you shouldn’t worry
I agree. I wonder if the other characters will be Brits considering the entire cast so far is made up of UKers and an Aussie.
Yes. To the producers. — make her a Brit in NY and have her use her real dialect. Her natural accent is so sexy.

Now she will be able to use her British accent, not her fake New Jersey one.
She’s not using either. She’s playing an American from NYC.
By the way, there’s no such thing as a British accent.
There are a lot of different British accents — any one of which can be called “a” British accent. But the person you replied to didn’t even say “a British accent.” They said “her British accent.” So you are a jackass two times over.
Made in Jersey’s problem was awful writing and poor directing (for not knowing her working class NJ accent was over baked). Nothing to do with Montgomery. I predict she’ll someday be an A list star. She’s very appealing.
Considering the ENTIRE Made in Jersey launch (a campaign where about $10m was spent just on that show) was built around her rather dubious “charisma,” and also that this sounds like one of those shows Rose Byrne was in negotiations for, it’s safe to say she was NOBODY’s first choice–and her playing a Pulitzer winner is only going to make this re-tread more laughable.
Pursued by multiple pilots and chose this one?? Doubt it, she was painfully bad on made in jersey.
Love Janet Montgomery!! I hope this one sticks for her.
Does anyone know who Dorian Gray is or care?
Liked her in Merlin…& a costume drama some yrs ago.
This show will fail.
She’s not right for this show. Too pretty and frail. Also, she seems more suited
for dating/romance shows. Get her in a good ensemble.
I liked her in Human Target, be good to see how this goes!
You seriously don’t know who Dorian Gray is?!?
Time to re-take Literature my friend. Look under Oscar Wilde.
this is the Dancing with the Stars audience. I bet they haven’t brushed up on their literature lately.
nobody cares about Dorian Gray under the age of 40. that’s the point.
I really don’t get it, she’s more annoying than talented, some people are just to easy to please.
Horrible casting!! I don’t get this at all. The words talentless and irritating come to mind. Montgomery ruined Made in New Jersey and now this. Good luck. Sorry for all the American actresses who could do much better by this script, which wasn’t bad.
Oh how jealous actors who didn’t get the role troll these boards.
