The other shoe has dropped — following Twentieth Television’s decision last week not to renew the Ricki Lake Show, CBS TV Distribution today said that its struggling freshman syndicated talker The Jeff Probst Show will not be retuning for the 2013-2014 season. Original episodes will continue to air through the end of the season. “We believe Jeff is an incredible talent, and that he and his dedicated producing team delivered quality episodes throughout the season. Unfortunately, the audience isn’t there to support a second year. We are grateful to the entire staff, our affiliate partners and advertisers for their ongoing support of The Jeff Probst Show,” a CTD spokesperson said. Added Probst, “I’m super bummed but extremely proud. The truth is all shows come to an end. Ours just ended a decade sooner than we had hoped.” Probst continues of course as longtime host of CBS’ Survivor, which premieres its 26th installment tonight.
Like Ricki Lake, Jeff Probst never found an audience to support it as the two shows faced a glut of new talkers last fall. Jeff Probst already went through a round of layoffs in December when several staffers, including producers, were let go. The disappointing launch was at least partially responsible for the October shakeup at CBS TV Distribution, which saw president John Nogawski exit and Armando Nuñez get oversight of the division.
Jeff Probst joins Ricki Lake and sophomore syndicated talk show Anderson Cooper Live, which are ending their runs this season, as is Debmar-Mercury’s sophomore The Jeremy Kyle Show. Freshmen Katie, from ABC-Disney; Steve Harvey and Trisha Goddard, from NBCU; and Dish Nation have been renewed.

Great Guy! Jeff will bounce back.
He is not a good interviewer. He talks way too much.
I can’t tell you how devastated I am about The Jeff Probst Show being cancelled. Of the zillion daytime talk shows out there…this show is the BEST! Jeff Probst is the most sincere and authentic host that has been on daytime talk shows. He gets interesting guests…and he is as excited to meet them and talk to them as we are to watch them. He asks great questions and really gets to the bottom of things with the guests. I think CBS really screwed up…and I’m just sick about it.
Linda Carpenter
I agree with Linda. Jeff is very genuine not a cardboard copy of the other talk shows. Love Yvette Nicole Brown with him they just brighten my day. The entire group works wouldn’t change a thing except extend show for another year.
I loved his show was schocked its
going off I loved watch it ,was so into it,sad news to me
Love to see Jeff and his wife Lisa do a segment together.
I became disinterested because of the same guest on there all the time. I really love Jeff being a host and his wife Lisa they just needed some pzazz to keep the audience interested, not just the box gift.
Need more advertisers to give better gifts to audience.
Best of Luck
Kimberly
Can’t wait to hear when Katie gets the axe. Borderline unwatchable, even for daytime television.
It actually got renewed last month.
I so agree with you Katie needs to go but Jeff’s shows bring the human beings to life, what is wrong with the networks? Maybe it is the time slot. I never watched survivor I know shocking I was working and didn’t have DVR’s back then, so Jeff was new to me. I love when Yvette is on she is so positive and uplifting. Jeff will be missed. What are they replacing him with?????
I think it was the time slot. The hours before dinner are better because dinner is being fixed, people returning from work enjoy down time, etc. I found Jeff’s show refreshing. I learned so many about things that normally fall between the cracks of sensationalism and over done news. I will always remember “Oh WOW.”
Are you kidding me? Katie is the best, with something new and exciting every show! I am sorry to see Jeff Probst go, and he did have great guests, but his show was so predictable with that silly lying game and if I hear “roll it” one more time…….
Is this not the SECOND TIME that Ricki Lake has been cancelled? I actually thought she had gotten the hook last year.
This news about Jeff Prosbt talk show being Axed SUCKS!!! It Did take me few shows to really warm up to him, now I watch him Every Day!!! So many other talk shows that have
Nothing to offer, EX: Jeremy Kyle show, so Please reconsider Giving Jeff Proust a 2nd season!!! He also is just getting in his groove & it’s Very clear he’s aware as well Also love the dynamics between him , his gorgeous wife Lisa!!! Big Mistake!!!…e
I agree with you. This sucks! I like his guest hosts and the games.
AGREED.. I also DVR’d it EVERY night!(Chicago-1am)I have to admit to a preference for their original format, therefore completely disagreeing w/Jeff- who said, ‘maybe if we had started w/ Yvette or Lisa W., things would have been different’. No way. I LOVE what Lisa W. brings, but honestly, he didn’t NEED a co-host (made him just like everyone else, in my opinion) I loved the men on the couch segments, the challenges at the end & how they used to show behind the scenes stuff during the commercials too.. Tho still believe it’s the best talk show out there, even as-is..Really sad to see it go! AC/Chgo
gmckrr I agree, it sucks that he is being cancellled. I really like his show and so do all my friends. We will miss him. He has such a truthful, exciting sow.
The tribe, America, has spoken.
Not cool, Matt. JP is a national treasure.
WOW!! I loved that show.. The only show in daytime that was honest conversation. too bad
You know, phrases like “incredible talent” should not be tossed around like Frisbees. They should actually have some link with reality.
I’ve been a fan and advocate for Jeff for many years. He’s really talented. Obviously, Jeff has a great day job so he’ll be fine, but I feel bad because he really would be a great talk show host. Also, it stinks for the hard working staff.
But on the other hand, you jerks wouldn’t even give me a courtesy interview, so there!
This is not surprising at all. The audience never connected with his personality. He’s gameshow host material only. No more, no less.
Well put. I find him oft-putting, with those ridiculous dimples and the badly dyed jet-back hair. He has an artificial quality that does not wear well in a daytime talk show.
I agree totally. The only time I wanted to watch was because of the guests sometimes . Sorry he just doesn’t seem genuine to me.
Now, when are they going to end that weird Ellen show. It’s for the cleaning the house ,cooking , and laundry hour. It’s unwatchable.
Jeff is a good guy but there are just way too many of these shows on as half of them should get the ax, including that crapfest hosting by that Zucker tool Couric, but she has a guaranteed second year on her deal, hence why she’ll be on next season. Jeff’s show airs in the wee hours of the morning now in most markets.
As has been the case for years- Never a surprise when another daytime talk show gets the boot. The suits in Talk Show Universe get it wrong over and over because they are flaming Libs that think America WANTS to hear from talk show hosts who can’t hold a marriage together for long, who have NOT raised any children or not any recently, who’s ideals are against the MAJORITY of daytime stay-at-home moms who support the daytime programs. Until you suits start listening, we, the audience will keep hitting the REJECT button.
Don’t send us any more reality show celebrity wanna-be’s. Don’t send us any more comedians. Don’t send us any more unlikable women who have the warmth of ice tea.
And now, to be the first to go on record with predictions of the next three failed talk shows:
Katie: Yes, she was renewed for a second season but lots of failed shows have enough money behind them to die slowly. Anybody remember John Walsh or Tony Danza talk shows? How about Megan Mullaly or Tempest Bledsoe? maybe you recall Marilu Henner’s talk show? I could seriously go on for pages. Most of the ones listed above did a couple of seasons and yet…poof…gone. Katie will be added to this list as well. Sure her numbers have popped thanks to her celebrity friends and agent pulling favors to land a few big names, but those favors are running out and nobody wants to do her show because nobody wants to upset Ellen. (Thats insider info and accurate my friends) Katie lost her “likability” factor years ago, much like Rosie O’Donnell did once upon a time.) Katie id gone.
Bethenny Frankel- This is a no-brainer. Her life and relationships are a train-wreck. Daytime audiences want mentors in daytime, not people who are doing worse than they are. Producers are hoping viewers will connect to her because she is willing to expose her flaws and be “raw”. Nope. Don’t care. Not likable. Not interesting. Rejected.
And that brings us to Jenny McCarthy. This is a no-brainer. Women will reject her crass humor after a few weeks- it will get tired very quickly. There are only so many poop and hemeroid references one can laugh at. She is another one who fails in all relationships and has absolutely NOTHING to offer the daytime viewer except smart-ass comebacks and those will not sustain her, no matter how many times she begs Jim Carey to appear. The Jenny McCarthy talk show is D.O.A.
Dr. Phil will continue to dominate, The Doctors will fade to cancellation, Dr. Oz will sustain itself but won’t set any records, and there will be a new show come along out of left field that will blow people away…
Mark my words- I have never been wrong.
So spot on! To have either hosts that cannot connect, or those who host marriage and family topics when they cannot seem to hold a marriage together and have never cared for children have nothing to offer the mainstream audience.
I have found that there are a few things that everyone thinks they can do and once they get a little celebrity they get on to the fast track, even if they know nothing about what is involved: hosting a chat show; talk radio; writing a childrens book; politics.
Steve Harvey left his wife for another woman. That’s ok? It’s easy to say everyone will fail. Katie will go another year at least – if not more. Bethany will do well. Jenny McCarthy has a show now on VH1 that’s impossible to watch.
Ricki lived the life you were talking about. She should have done a different show. More personal. Sitting at a desk, talking about her life. People would watch that. Not warmed over 90′s topics with a bright and purple set. I blame the producers for the failure of Ricki and Probst. You can’t take a big personality and make them into Oprah. If you hire Jeff, give us Jeff – stop hiring hack producers. They do the same show over and over again. “Everyday household items that can be used as beauty products” – boring.
People will respond to Kris Jenner and Bethany as long as the host remain transparent and open.
I LOVE the Jeff Probst show! It’s so refreshing and down to earth. I can’t believe it’s being canceled. We love you Jeff!
This outcome was predicted when the show was announced. Whoever greenlit and paid for this eventual failure to move forward should have their torch snuffed. Probst should stick to hosting reality tv and game shows. Boot the dreadful Drew Carey and put Probst on The Price Is Right or hire him for The X-Factor. His talent exists there and not in a daytime gabfest.
The hacks that conceptualized and produced this show were out of their league. When you have a B grade team this is inevitable.
agreed
Another stronger/smarter company will pick him up and re-tool – There’s plenty of room for Jeff.
I love the Jeff Probst Show. I record it daily and have not missed a single episode. It is the ONLY talk show I watch. Why? because Jeff is REAL, he is honest, fresh and likeable. The top 15 minutes with Lisa were great TV; Jeff is at his best when telling a story and playing off of the guest host. Please give his show another try. Lose the cream in the face game, thanks for not having a cooking segment. Give us more Jeff, he is a proven entity….Jeff and wife/family at home, take the show on location etc.
I was so sad to here nbc decided to cancel Jeff Probst show. I feel this is such a mistake i love this show it seems to be the only show that is made for us regular viewers. I Feel this is uplifting. Please reconsider and keep this show on. I would rather watch Jeff than Dr. Phil.
Sad to see The Jeff Probst Show cancelled. I really enjoy this program, he has very many interesting guest and he is so down to earth. I like the fact that his show is different than other talk shows. I love this show. Please reconsidered and give the show a second chance.
I am super frustrated about this show being canceled but we keep the shows that highlight the dramatic crap. JP is a family show that celebrates the average guy who has an amazing moment in life, the games are cute and some you can pause to see if your family is right, and the celeb guests even seem taken with this venue. Why can’t we celebrate the good instead of rewarding the negative. PLEASE give this show another shot in a more viable spot. And to Jeff, Lisa, Yvette, Lisa W., and your wonderful staff… thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will miss you all.
Love,
Ronni Anderson
I think jeff is the most down to earth guy and with Yvette Nicole Brown they are aesome.. Don’t cancel him…he was just warming up.love you jeff !!! awesome
Am a discriminating viewer, I don’t watch soaps ( morning or evening fare) I enjoy the fun and not sleazy program. It’s refreshing and he brings interesting guests that actually do do in the world. I get sick of the “celebrities” ,the notoriously famous that make the talk show circuit and just annoying regurgitated topics. Jeff has a fresh and PG 13 feel that makes me feel good for the rest of the day.Thank you to those who worked so hard to give a good wholesome show!
I agree! I loved his show! For the most part, it was different and refreshing. I’m sad to see it go.
I just kept waiting for it to get better. There is alot of “potential” there, but a lack of originality. He took a little from everyone else and never really developed his own.
References were made about Regis and trying to emmulate his style. Regis is a very seasoned professional with many interesting annecdotes and experiences to share, and I believe Jeff’s unscripted show platform is what failed him. It all seemed too unorganized. If I wanted to watch unorganized I’d look in my sock drawer.
could see this coming, he’s not a very good talk show host, ask’s awkward questions and talks way too much, and sorry, just doesnt look believable or something….the show seemed cheap or second class…
I agree with several of the comments above.. I never knew who he was before this show & it’s the only talk show I watch anymore (since they took Leah Remini off .. The ?? can’t even remember the name! lol)
I can’t stand all the fake drama & reality crap the networks have these days…
Jeff will be missed> and my DVR will have an open spot
