What is it about Berlin and Jennifer Aniston? This is the third project being sold here at the EFM that involves the actress (the other two are Convention and an untitled Elmore Leonard project that’s
currently shooting.) Red Granite International is handling international sales on She’s Funny That Way which also stars Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Cybil Shepherd, Eugene Levy, Kathryn Hahn and Brie Larson. Peter Bogdanovich is directing from a screenplay he wrote with Louise Stratten. Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach are producing.
The film centers on a married Broadway director (Wilson) who falls for a prostitute-turned-actress and works to help her advance her career. Aniston will play a therapist whose mother is in rehab for alcoholism. Principal photography is set to start in June in New York City. Aniston is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

She’s an easy sale at Berlin is why–real box office chops among Bruce Almighty, The Break Up, Marley & Me (an enormously profitable film) Horrible Bosses and some smaller pictures that more than made their money back. She’s the only credible Rom Com star out there–Amy Adams tried to do the Jen thing with Leap Year and failed dramatically. Just because something looks easy doesn’t mean it is.
this…
She’s the only credible Rom Com star out there
What planet do you live on. Jennifer Aniston has never in her entire career headlined a movie to success. She has been a supporting character in films. Nothing wrong with that. But to claim that she is some comedic genius is laughable. When she is the lead the movie tanks. time and time again. The reason they are shopping this film is because she can’t get films greenlit based on her name alone. She can’t get the financing. Which is why her production company is basically a bust. There are many other women that have had successful films in comedy based on their name. Jennifer is not one of them. And her overseas numbers are terrible too.
wake up and smell the coffee. Seriously her fans live in some altered state of reality.
Name one film, where Jennifer is the biggest name on the marquee that has done well?
Rumor Has it? No.
Management? No.
Love Happens? No.
The Switch? No.
Wanderlust? No.
The Object of My Affection? No.
Picture Perfect? No.
These are just the romantic comedies that her name would have been the biggest name. I haven’t included things like Derailed, etc.
And so far, none of her fare being offered at Berlin have any buyers because internationally, she’s not a star.
None of those films you mention were successful because of Aniston. Stick Kate Beckinsale in the same roles, and you’d have the same box office.
Great post, INterested. Love how the trolls get their panties in a knot over certain names. Aniston’s HEADLINED some money makers. Her numbers are pretty consistent, if you ask me (and wow, not all her films are rom-coms). I’m no big fan, but the numbers don’t lie.

Now if you want rom-com box office poison, look no further than Katherine Heigl.
… Gotta love how when you can’t back up a claim (especially one that turns out to be unfounded), you call other people haters, trolls, etc. It’s a fact that Jennifer Aniston CANNOT OPEN a picture ON THE BASIS OF HER NAME ALONE. There’s your reality check.
Wow. Another rom-com for Jennifer Aniston. She sure likes to take risks and tries new roles….
How they plan to sold this movie with Owen Wilson as Leading Comic? Owen, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman are supporting comics. They can’t Lead movie to success like Adam Sandler or Vince Vaughn. They can shine as supporting comics. Like Jason does with Melissa McCarthy now. And Jennifer is supporting too. And we saw how failed Wanderlust when 2 supporting comics (Aniston and Rudd) were leading. Or Switch.
Jennifer is just too old to play 25-33 years leading lady in rom-com. And she still tries it in every movie. And it’s just looks sad and unconvincing. Like it was in Just Go with It. She was good in Horrible Bosses. It was different role for her.
You must be producer cause your way of thinking is disgusting. Women over forty can’t play rom com leading roles? Come on! This is such a sexist thinking it makes me want to barf. Trust me, people want to see actress over forty in leading roles. We don’t want to see actors over forty or fifty with twenty years old ladies at their side. That’s truly appalling!
You did not understand me. She is not playing 40 something woman. Problem with Jennifer is that she want’s to play 25-33 naive young woman. Leading woman in romantic movie. And she does not look like 30 anymore. Just like Tom Cruise wants to play 35 something young hot head. And then looks ridiculous like in Jack Reacher.
People don’t see her as 25-30 Rachel Green anymore.
Tom Cruise played an esteemed army veteran in Jack Reacher
But watching 50 year old men in action films is OK?
Too bad she can’t act. Or even try to. She’ll wear her hair blond, wear black clothes and flap her hands around because that’s what every single character she has ever played does. The Good Girl was the only time she ever gave a performance.
You’re correct. NO one believes she can’t find “true love in a movie” Even if it’s the same in her real life. No, she can’t act. But at least she chooses roles she knows how to play.
please if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything! all of this hate towards jennifer is rediculous she is more talented than you will ever be so suck it up and move on. i really don’t understand why people like you love to attack her, please just leave her alone! no one is forcing you to watch her movies even know you should really give her a chance.
She’s had so many chances and used the good will the audience has for her and her small amount of talent yet failed to grow as a person or become a better actress. The Good Girl showed a glimmer of something. Aniston isn’t smart enough to build a career and she’s been poorly advised by agents. She has made a boat load of money with very little and she’s lucky. Rich and lucky. That’s a feat. No one can take away the fact she’s earned a lot. She’s a smart business woman to be sure.
Shy, Bateman is not a supporting comic anymore. He’s the star of the movie killing it at the BO this weekend.
And how many roles have yall been offered?? … That’s what I thought’, now sit your hating asses down’!..
You’re all negative and right on the nose about Jen. Is it me or is there is there something crazy sexy about her as she ages?
Yay. Another rom-com filmed in New York City.
Here’s the Central Park scene, here’s the shot of the Chrysler Building at night….
I think the haters are on automatic pilot. If you had actually put aside your bitterness and read the article you would have noticed she is doing an Elmore Leonard project AND a Charlie Kaufman-esque film. Not exactly rom coms are they?
And wasn’t the Elmore Leonard project sold at Cannes, not Berlin?
Well the Elmore Leonard Project is still a comedy…and I could be wrong (I read the book a long time ago) but Jennifer Aniston’s character falls in love with the kidnapper.
Also, people like you complain about hatred towards Jennifer but then you’re posting negative things on other actress’s threads.
Hypocrite much?
Like most intelligent film goers I cannot stand Jen Aniston. Oh, Jen – instead of making more films I think you’d be better off staying home and crying your eyes out because the love of your life is with Angie Jolie.
Sorry to be so crass, but I hate Jen Aniston films.
What is it about Jennifer Aniston? What it is is that she can’t get a studio to green light a movie and has to go the indie route. Look, it’s not that the producers have the money to make Convention. They’re in Berlin trying to pre-sell it so they can make the movie. The other two films are in Berlin looking for people who’ll pony up the money to distribute them domestically and internationally so that the producers can make back the money they’ve already put into it. The question is – will anyone bite? Pre-selling is the exact tactic used by the producers of an Aniston project called “Miss You Already” at Cannes in May 2012. Nobody would pony up the cash to make that movie and there probably won’t be any takers on Convention either. It’s a bad investment. The fact of the matter is – Jennifer Aniston can’t put putts in seats without a major co-star and even then people aren’t going to see her. They’re going to an Adam Sandler movier or a Ben Stiller movie or a Vince Vaughn movie – and Jennifer Aniston just happens to be in it. If she’s an “A-list” movie star then I think someone in Hollywood needs to redefine the term.
What I want to know is why are these projects being announced with the awe allocated a $200 million tentpole? These Aniston movies are $15-20 million – max and surefire box office flops IF the even get made. I’m more than over Jennifer Aniston and I’m wondering why Hollywood isn’t, too. She can’t open a movie and she’s Rachel Green in every movie she makes. She’s a tv actress – and a mediocre one at that.
She makes no effort in any of her films. She’s never grown as an actress. She won’t change her appearance and play any character but herself. She has a range that goes from A to A minus. She done nothing with the power that fame afforded to her. There was a moment in time where she flirted with being an artist. Her production company was a pathetic joke. What she needs is a real manager and agent who get her to go back and study acting and use the talent she has for something meaningful. Watching her coast and do mediocre projects is sad. Kevin Huvane has given her terrible advice through her movie career. She should fire him.
The fascination with her by “fans” continues to be her marriage, hair and body – will she or won’t she show more T & A! Honestly, I find her so massively predictable, boring – and unattractive. I bring that up because her PR team works overtime to present her as some American sex goddess. All I could think when I saw “Wanderlust” is how funny it would have been had Tina Fey been cast in that role. And honestly I’m totally sick of Tina Fey, but she would have brought something authentic to the role. Least of all humor, which is what the role called for. Instead we were treated to yet more Rachel Green, this time looking like she was doing a catalog shoot for Anthropologie’s spring line. Pathetic excuse for acting. Again!
The real news is that the great Peter Bogdanovich is making another film! Take a look at that cast and the producers! This is big news! I for one am very excited and happy to see Mr. Bogdanovich return to helming duties.
She is the only “Friends” cast member who is a movie star. Kevin Huvane has done (and is doing) a great job. She should concentrate on modulating her performance more according to what the material suggests maybe and what audiences will be expecting from the character she’s playing as opposed to bumping from scene to scene – a live sitcom crutch maybe. In my opinion. “Rom-coms” are all about the chemistry, aren’t they? It’s either there or it isn’t. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd look like they’ve got it so I’m really looking forward to “Admission.” A Weitz, any Weitz, is great on the subject of privilege (most unfashionable these days) or the lack thereof – in addition to actually endeavoring to be versatile – in the way that old studio hands aspired to be; no, were required to be – thematically they can be Harold Ross’ the New Yorker one day, David Remnick’s the next. People like Robert Wise, Sydney Pollack, Norman Jewison come to mind, Cukor (maybe some day,) and Hawks too. They both have that potential, again, in my opinion. The auteurist mindset and climate isn’t particularly friendly to such out-dated career aspiration. But classy old style Hollywood star vehicles for people like Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Deborah Kerr are definitely within their wheelhouses.
You mean juicy lead character stuff for people like Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain? I agree!
What is the problem with these negative people ,who seem to be only capable of discussing the negative qualities in Jen Aniston. Reagardless of acting talent and lets face it in comparison to the old stars of many years ago many of the present actors certainly don’t have the complete charisma or true star quality,by that I mean a person who glows from the cinema screen .Jen has been hugely successful and seems to be a funny, enthusiastic, determined and genuine person. There is no doubt thatshe has a great deal of talent and integrity,as well as consideration for other peoples feelings ,which many folk do not possess. She has also continued to be popular in many areas regardless of those people who choose to slate her lack of acting ability .I would say that this lady is a treasure of cinema ,why? well for starters she has an incredible sense of humour ,which is a huge gift in itself,as well as not being egotistical .She is one lovely lady who has utilised her ability for the joy of others .Huge acting talent in itself is not a feature of many of the actors today. I would also like to say that Tom Cruise was brilliant in Jack Reacher and is capable of carrying a film by himself, with his screen presence. Everyone grows old, but we should be able to value different types of talent on screen.
