EXCLUSIVE: Jennifer Lawrence has been tapped to star opposite Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner in the David O Russell pic formerly known as American Bullshit, the drama written by Eric Singer and Russell about the ’70s FBI sting operation Abscam that took down a bunch of U.S. congressmen. That puts Lawrence back in business with Russell and Cooper, her cohorts on The Weinstein Company’s Silver Linings Playbook that landed them all Oscar nominations; she already has won the SAG Award and a Golden Globe for the role. She will play Bale’s wife in the Abscam movie, which is being produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle through Atlas Entertainment, which developed the film at Sony Pictures. The ensemble is being fully financed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures. Ellison also is producing and has been developing the script.

Again cast for a role she’s 15 years too young to play?
Exactly my thoughts.
These days seems you have to be 20-25 to get a great part if you are female, no need to be a good actress.
the 30 plus are getting the mother parts that are left
and in a few years we see 18 plus getting the leads, and 20 will be to old.
Meanwhile men in all ages and forms and ugly get all.
Haters never win
care to join us in the 21st century when no one gives a shit about age difference???
Orly? Unless the woman is older than the man. Then everyone starts to care. So much hypocrisy…
Hahaha, I’ll join you, whoever you are. If I wanted real, I’d stay home with my wife and watch Project Runway.
Hm maybe these producers, actors, and directors are all seeing something mature ability or intuition in her to be able to play these parts… hmm maybe…
Amen for saying it. I’m a bit tired of this overrated twit getting cast ahead of talented older actresses. She was the worst, weakest part of SLP.
who gives a fuck what you’re tired of.
You are freakin’ kidding right? Have you seen her in Winters Bones, Hunger Games and The House at the End of the Street? She has been the lead in four very different genres and has nailed each big time. She is an actor of a generation and you comment only betrays some deep set problem you have.
In the Hunger Games movies she is playing a teen, which she is not. I think Katniss was around 16 in the book.
Lightning may not strike twice for Lawrence, Cooper, and Russell.
Huh, I’m pretty sure lightening already has struck twice or more for all of them.
Lawrence: WINTER’S BONE (Oscar nom), HUNGER GAMES, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Oscar nom)
Cooper: HANGOVER trilogy, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Oscar nom)
O’Russell: THE FIGHTER (Oscar nom), SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Oscar nom)
Don’t forget Lawrence is also Mystique in the current X-Men lineup
It’s great that she is not stuck playing teenagers like Emmy Rossum and the like. The cast is great and I loved Silver Linings so I can’t wait to see this film.
Yeah, it looks like a great cast
Bradley Cooper is to Mickey Rooney as Jennifer Lawrence is to Judy Garland.
How many more movies will they make together? They’re already starring in Serena.
Lawrence and Cooper are also like the team of Ginger Roberts and Fred Astaire.
Tracy and Hepburn? Freeman and Judd? Fibber and Gildersleeve?
Professor Falken
Chris, please, stop the hyperbole. Don’t compare the passable talents of Cooper and Lawrence to Rooney & Garland or Astaire and Rogers. These classic movie stars had presence, immense and timeless talent, and uniqueness. I cannot say that about Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.
It took me twenty minutes to stop laughing at your post. Rooney was a workmanlike actor but hardly an excellent one. He was always typecast. Garland got by on her looks and her singing talent. Fred Astaire could not act at all. Of the four people that you name, only Rogers had any real acting talent. The fact that some people become movie stars doesn’t mean they can act. Look at Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, et al.
spotlessmcpartlandattacks, are you seriously telling me that Bradley Cooper is more talented than Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney and Jennifer Lawrence is more gifted than the legendary Judy Garland ( she was than singing talent ) and Ginger Rogers ? You are losing it and you are a joke. Now, I have heard it all.
Judy Garland was not only a terrific comedian who knew how to effortlessly deliver a line in her MGM films, she grew into a very talented actress as witnessed in “A Star is Born” and “Judgement at Nuremberg” (to name a couple of her later films). Fred Astaire was also terrific at comedy as was Ginger Rogers. But neither of them did much other than comedy. Ginger Rogers made “Kitty Foyle” but that was one of her few dramatic roles. And Fred Astaire didn’t do any drama until much later in his career (the only film I can think of is “On the Beach”).
Good lord people. I don’t think the person was comparing talent. I think it was just entertaining long lasting partnerships. We’re in a new era of movies in terms of “talent.” Judy can’t be compared with Jennifer because their movies and styles are far too different. Calm down.
I agree that as to DANCING, Astaire, Rogers, Rooney and Garland all were far more talented than Cooper and Lawrence. But of course, the movie would have lost its point had Cooper and Lawrence been dancing like Fred and Ginger. However, the point is that Fred, Ginger, Mickey and Judy were not “actors” any more than Bradley and Jennfer were “dancers”. When you saw those four on the screen, you knew what you were getting on the screen. And it was always pretty similar.
Cooper and Lawrence, on the other hand, were and are “actors”, and excellent ones. Cooper rarely gets a chance to show his acting chops because he is good-looking. Lawrence was too “good looking” for Winter’s Bone – then she showed up without makeup or primping before another reading and nailed the part. David O. Russell had hired Cooper already, and insisted that JLaw was too young to play opposite Cooper – then she read for the part…Russell afterwards insisted that JLaw be the actress for “Serena”, light years away from the Tiffany character (except in terms of forceful nature), and hired Cooper as the husband on the basis of JLaw’s recommendation. Russell hired both of them again (although not as husband and wife) for parts in his unnamed movie about ABSCAM. Russell is one known for recognizing superior acting talent.
My wife did not even remember that JLaw had been Katniss in The Hunger Games. I asked my wife if she thought that the part of Tiffany in SLP was played by a 21 year old. My wife, usually a pretty good judge of such things, immediately replied, “Nope.”
Jennifer plays Christian Bale’s wife. I think she doesn’t share a single scene with Cooper in this movie. Unless David changed the scrpt to make her role bigger.
ryan goslin and emma stone have, what, 3 movies together? If the chemistry is good…
So Amy Adams is playing supporting now? Wonder how that went down…
If they are going to sideline Adams for Lawrence then they can go Argo themselves. Adams is much better actress and anyone with eyes can see that.
No. The role of mistress is bigger than the wife.
Yeah, if she’s still playing the role of mistress…
Agreed, Jinjeon. I don’t understand the Jennifer Lawrence praise. She is average at best, and I am being kind. Her publicist is doing a good job with her mega-hype.
i wasn’t aware a publicist can influence every single critics board in the country and the foreign press, fellow actors, casting directors, Gary Ross, Russell, etc.
Totally agree…just don’t get it…
You’re an moron if you think all the praise she’s been getting by everyone in the business since Winter’s Bone (since Poker House for critics), is due to a publicist. LOL!
Both of their roles are supporting in the script, although Adams’ is bigger. Bale and Cooper are the big stars.
Bale and Lawrence!? So cool and a little weird as I was just saying the other day that I’d love to see them in a movie together. I’m a big fan of Lawrence, she seems a little young for the role but this takes place in the 70s so I’m sure she’ll look the part once she gets the 70s makeover.
Way too young. They had a kid who was like 12 years old.
adopted, not biological.
It is odd she is best known for playing a high schooler in her gargantuan franchise, but keeps getting cast in roles that should go to 35 year olds.
And really, at this point, they should only bother announcing projects that DON’T feature Lawrence and/or Cooper.
They seem like another Tracy/Hepburn pairing.
You compare two great actors Hepburn and Tracey to
two media pin-ups , who through selling themselves in the media , have become bankable and get the parts?
Shame that really great actors do not get a chance, but that Hollywood is dominated by media darlings and CAA clients.
you’re so clueless is hilarious.
While I’m not fond of Cooper as an actor (though he had his moments in SLP), I have to say Jennifer Lawrence is perhaps one of the best young actresses working today. Also, she’s hilarious in interviews. (Why hasn’t she done a comedy yet?)
Sweet, 3 horrible actors all in one movie! I love when they make it easy to spot the flicks to avoid waaaayy ahead of time like this!
Don’t worry bro. Statham was just cast in Fast & Furious so you can go check that out. Its got Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, and The Rock. Seems like more of your taste.
In all seriousness, Cooper, Renner, and Bale are some of the most talented leading men out there today. This is a loaded, talented cast.
So Amy Adams is the mistress and Jennifer Lawrence is the wife? Yeah, I don’t buy that…who cheats on J-Law with an older, less sexy woman?
+1
David O Russell has said that he cast her as Tiffany in SLP because she has an “ageless quality.” She was completely convincing in that role, whatever her age was supposed to be. She’ll be fine in this, too, people. I expect greatness with this cast.
Well said Amy, I completely agree! I’m sure Jennifer will shine in this role.
Amy, not one minute did I believe Jennifer Lawrence in her role. She was too young for this character, and she had problems pulling -off the dramatic and the comedic aspects of her character. Lawrence was trying too hard, and her line readings were the worst ( especially that one- on- one scene with Robert DeNiro ) Rachel McAdams and Elizabeth Banks auditioned for this Tiffany role. These ladies would have been perfect casting for Tiffany. Jennifer is not a trained actress, and it always shows in her acting. Recently, Lawrence was mediocre hosting SNL. Now, Jessica Chastain is a actress I can support fully, I cannot support the limited Jennifer Lawrence.
Rachel Mcadams has been horrible in her last 3 roles ( Sherlock Holmes anyone) and Elizabeth Banks was inconsequential as Effie. Many people love Lawrence and her unaffected style of acting, considering the fact that she has been so hugely supported by her peers, critics, SAG, Osars, etc. I know that Lawrence auditioned and won her SLP role fair and square. That scene with De Niro actually got a standing ovation at TIFF and at Cannes so you are in the minority there.
Also, trust that Russell wouldn’t sacrifice his movie if he though she stunk.
Lawrence’s ability to pull of the dramatic and comedic aspects should be quite evident to anyone viewing the film. She was great, especially in the diner scenes with Bradley and in the diner scenes early in the movie. She got the tone and pitch of the movie perfectly and her timing was just astounding.
Seriously? She handled the comedic and dramatic aspects of the film perfectly, the tone and pitch of her delivery was perfect. You had critics, from Hollywood Reporter To Rolling Stone, tweeting MINUTES after the movie premiered at TIFF that Lawrence would be Oscar nominated for her work. The scene with De Niro got an ovation at TIFF and also in my theater so I don’t know what your talking about. She was perfect. I thought she was very unaffected and still in character.
Her scenes in the diner and outside the diner with Bradley were also pitch perfect, probably the best acting outside of the Master I have seen all year.
I get that acting is subjective, really I do, but if an actress garners critics acclaim and awards from every critics board in the country and abroad, get a SAG nomination and is heavily supported judging by other ACTORS for her Oscar win, you have to stop and say the actor did a great job or at the last worked it out in the role. Doesn’t have to be your favorite, but you have to say she did a great job. Not even if by the standard wins or not, but by just being universally nominated.
And McAdams stunk in her last 3 roles ( Sherlock Holmes anyone?!… wonder why she was killed off in one scene…) and Banks isn’t a great actress.
OVATION?? YOU MEAN STANDING OVATION? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? NO WONDER 99% OF THE MOVIES HOLLYWOOD PRODUCES SUCK WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE PERFORMANCES LIKE J-LAW’S IN SLP.
THIS COUNTRY JUST CONTINUES TO GET DUMBED DOWN BY IGNORAMUS PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF.
The character was poorly developed and her screaming way of showing her character has mental illness irritated me. Her premeditated faces and expressions rubbed me the wrong way and her poor line delivery makes her the most overrated young actress in history. Not to mention she is dead inside most of the time and she seems to be “standing there”.
She is such a BAD actress is a joke that Hollywood keeps pushing for her. She is one interview away from saying something truly offensive.
Her expressions were not premeditated to me at all. Her line delivery was pitch perfect and natural. No idea what you are talking about. Its hard to say her expressions were “premeditated” considering she has an “off the cuff” acting style.
@Sasha – Agreed, agreed, agreed. Well articulated assessment of Jennifer Lawrence’s inadequacy and unearned hype. Same for @Katie above.
Hollywood’s insular attempts to make certain actors happen and shove them down the public’s throat, despite their obvious inadequacies, needs to stop. Also, the obvious pr-based cliched attacks on people who state the obvious are pathetic and only antagonize.
Sasha, thank you. I concur.
Your judgement is so incompetent, lmao. A bad actress, wow you’re a moron. You clearly have no knowledge of or ability to discern nuance, subtlety, or approach. Go watch Poker House or Winter’s Bone you pathetic, uncultured idiot.
“delivery makes her the most overrated young actress in history”
You also clearly no shit about history. Educate yourself.
When some of you guys posts this way you’re only embarrassing yourself and not proving anything that other than your ignorance, seriously.
It seems you have JLaw confused with Riva
I agree with this 100%.
Sasha,
Let us consider for the moment the director she worked with. David O. Russell has elicited many wonderful performances from actors, and is known as an exacting taskmaster. His son has depression. He is quite familiar with the disease. And with bipolar, and others. If you did not like something JLaw did, perhaps it wasn’t her idea you objected to – perhaps it was the way David wanted it. The “dead inside” aspect, and then the sudden screaming, or the constant “I won’t ask” and then asking anyway by Cooper are some of the familiar symptoms to those of us who know them. The performances carried the tang of people who had really been there.
Honestly, the people who thought they performed brilliantly are entitled to consideration. Those who disagree…well, they are entitled to an opinion too. I’m just saying what I saw and how it looks to me. Ergo I respectfully disagree with you but will defend to the death, as my wife’s family would say, your right to have your own “really stupid” opinion (that is what they would say – and did to me on many occasions – but was meant to be considered with a sense of humor).
Can’t please everyone. And the people you can never please actually think their singular opinion matters.
well i think you said that as jessica fan all about oscar buzz i dont care if she wins or not she is 22 so for been nominated 2 times its big honor so its insane to say she is not talented not as jessica or others but sorry she is so much younger you can compare her with more mature and old actresses its not the same league
I know, so many problems doing dramatic scenes… guess that’s why she’s the youngest actress to receive 2 Oscar nominations.
Jennifer Lawrence is having her moment and taking advantage of it. If David O. Russell thinks she’s right regardless of the age, then I guess that’s his right. But someday, not too long from now, Lawrence will be 32 or so, and she’ll hear about scripts with female roles for characters that age and she’ll wonder why she can’t be seen for those roles and why the directors are only auditioning 21 year olds “with an ageless quality” to play opposite 44 year old men. Then she’ll understand why there were people back in 2011 and 2012 who were a little exasperated by some of the parts she got.
+1
In some ways, I don’t blame actors in their mid to late 20s still playing teen and college-aged roles. At least when they turn 30 and try vying for more serious roles, the transition feels a little less jarring. I too wonder if Jennifer Lawrence will be in her late 20s/early 30s and will struggle to get these roles. I also wonder if even she does get them, will audiences shake their heads and go “wasn’t she playing these type of roles 5-10 years ago?” Would hate to see her be considered “too old” before her time.
Life isn’t fair, I’m a big fan of Jennifer and she should enjoy this time in her life.
BEST.NEWS.EVER!!!!
Hope she has scenes with Bradley, their chemistry is out of this world.
Being an actress would give anyone a complex. First they are always too young. Then one day, abruptly, they are too old. Like Jennifer was supposedly too young for SLP and too old for the Hunger Games. Except you can’t see that on screen at all; she’s perfect. Some actors can play across a wide range. She was playing mid 20s in her teens.
“Perfect”? Fanboying too much?
Let’s see. In Hunger Games she satisfied an extremely demanding fan base that approached her getting the role with skepticism to the tune of becoming the highest grossing female action star of all time. And in SLP she was merely nominated for best actress while the film grossed over a $100 million. Perfect works quite well. Hating too much? Yes.
The fact that she’s the highest-grossing female action star of all time has absolutely nothing to do with Jennifer Lawrence or her skill, and absolutely everything to do with Suzanne Collins for writing a book series that featured a female lead and was turned into an action movie.
It’s the writing and fanbase, not Lawrence, that made The Hunger Games so popular.
Perfect works.
1. Lots of genuine movie stars keep up with great working relationships with specific directors. From John Wayne and John Ford to Scorsese and De Niro and DiCaprio, something for contemporary actresses and female directors to bear in mind.
2. This Megan Ellison has ambition and taste – hope she keeps at it.
3. That cast looks like a bunch of Feds, white collar criminals, and victims to me!
its nice for her to be with such great cast, thats give her more confident and experience, i think the lead role for christian bale and amy adams but she should do it no matter how big/small the part it will be great movie
Seriously? Okay, Bradley at least can pass for early to mid 30s. It’s a big age difference, but they managed to make it work through a combination of chemistry and talent. Bale is more talented than either Cooper or Lawrence, but he actually looks a bit older than Cooper. A 22 year old is playing the wife of a 39 year old that could easily pass for being in his early to mid 40s. Yes, Jennifer is talented…but there are other, older and just as talented or more talented actresses (e.g. Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, etc.) out there.
Kate and Cate. I’d rather watch them in any role over anyone else.
Nah,
Kate and Cate are at the age where they will be cast as grandmothers, according to Hollywood.
In Kate’s case, she’s already played the mother of a 20-year-old.
its like people live in this alternate universe where Lawrence did not just get Oscar nominated and frontrunner status for playing an “older woman”. I personally, and my friends, came into SLP not realizing that it was Lawrence in the role and my friends thought she was at least 28. So she pulls it off. Its only now with some weird backlash that are saying this. In fact, I just read over the commentary for SLP when she was cast as Tiffany and it was the same arguments and then she proved everybody wrong.
I get that acting is subjective, but at some point , it should be agreed that an actress does at least a great job or worked the crap out of her role when she been critically acclaimed and praised by her peers and nominated by every critics association across the board.
This announcements seems timed to influence Oscar voting.
Exactly. Stop giving 30-40something roles to women just out of their teens.
Why don’t you all just wait, watch the movie, AND THEN JUDGE?
Most overrated actress, ever.
no…Rachel McAdams anyone? Anne Hathaway anyone?
Amandla, I live in NY and I go to the theatre often. I saw Anne Hathaway act in a production of Shakespeare In The Park’s Twelfth Night. She was absolutely wondrous , and she received raves from the notoriously tough NY theatre critics . Any actress or actor that can hit it out of the park performing Shakespeare on stage- is never overrated in my book. I want to see Jennifer Lawrence act in a production of Shakespeare In The Park. You and I know that will never happen.
To be fair , Rachel McAdams has made some bad career choices, but she still has loads of talent. She just needs to work with well-regard directors .
It may happen. Just not for several years. Hathaway could do that under pretty low key conditions. If Jennifer did it it would be a complete mad house. And the idea that stage acting is somehow more legitimate than other types is a snobbish holdover. Acting is acting.
hanna, please. Their was nothing low key about Hathaway’s stage presence and her wonderful acting ( and singing ) in that Shakespeare production. The audience members ( including Alec Baldwin and Director Kevin Smith ) were in awe of her and the whole cast- ending with a very hearty applause. Keep in mind, a great film editor can camouflage some bad acting, but acting on stage reveals it all.
you should say that for boring actresses like jennifer anniston and eva mendez or mila kunis and still working again, when 22 actress been nominated 2 times on oscar so you should open your eyes or maybe its all about jealousy
I bet you are a Kristen Stewart fan…
no, not all lol
Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence both great
my comment was for *Roger.
Great news! such a wonderful cast! can’t wait for this!really hope Jennifer will win at the Oscars.
for some mysterious reasons the well deserved success of Miss Lawrence deeply irritates a few people, it’s so weird! their arguments are so ridiculous, why would you want to swim against a tsunami?
I know, even if I hated her work, she’s just so damn adorable in interviews, it’s impossible to say something bad about her!
Go ahead and judge, but you better pay attention to the fact that Jennifer has been nominated for 2 oscars. She was nominated when she was 20! DID YOU SEE HOW MUCH PRAISE SHE GOT 4 THE HUNGER GAMES?! Are you blind, deaf? because she got the same praise for SLP.. She has been praised not just by fans, but by Bradley Cooper and everyone she worked with, that has to mean something.. Go ahead and cry to yo parents but just remember, her pets will be more famous then you will ever be..
Jennifer, Julia Roberts won acting awards, and I don’t consider her a good actress ( and her past co-stars praise her ) . So, please don’t use that argument. Jennifer Lawrence is a novice to acting and she is not trained.
A bunch of veteran and respected actors were never trained, they just learned more through experience.
Seriously the ignorance.
Jason, the most respected thespians are trained. That is the bottom line. Most actors will tell you learn your craft. Hopefully, Jennifer Lawrence will improve in time. But, right now, I don’t consider her talented. Their is a reason why so many young British, Australian, New Zealand, and other foreign thespians are taking over Hollywood- because they are trained and they have acting experience. For example, look at Brad Pitt ( not trained ). His acting cannot compare to classically trained Mark Strong and Ralph Fiennes. Movie star good looks does not make someone gifted.
Jason –
a “bunch” of… ??
You would not look like such an ignoramus if you bothered to back up any of your childish inarticulate hissy fits with knowledgeable well-reasoned specifics. Even JL’s trolls don’t bother to do the work and have no substance! LOL.
Then again, judging by the repeated screeching that she’s great because she got an award, what she seems to care about is getting awards and “beating Meryl” rather than pride and love of craft.
She can “learn through experience” on someone’s else’s dime.
You said absolutely nothing of substance.
And, yes a bunch of respected actors (throughout Hollywood history) were not classically trained.
“She can “learn through experience” on someone’s else’s dime.”
Who gives a fuck. Is beyond pathetic how some people are so invested in actors they hate.
Who gives a fuck. There are much more important things in life to complain about.
So what? what is this argument? a great actress must be “trained” inevitably? Jennifer Lawrence is in the category of “instinctive”actrresses: she IS the character, simply. Very few actresses have this ability, and she succeeded in it perfectly.
marie, their was nothing “instinctive” about Jennifer Lawrence’s past performances- especially in SLP. Lawrence was the weakest link in that cast. But, I give her credit for trying hard.
I don’t know where this fetish for “training” came from. Maybe it echoes the current fetish with credentialism. But looking it up Sean Penn didn’t go to acting school. Or Johnny Depp. Or Amy Adams. Or Jack Nicholson. Or Gordan Levitt. Or DiCarprio. And there are legions more.
argo, do your research. Sean Penn, Jack Nicholson, and Amy Adams come from a theatre background.
