ABC Family has picked up to series two of its three drama pilots — The Fosters, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio, which has been renamed Twisted. Filming on both, which are produced in-house, will begin in the spring for a summer debut. “These new shows will bring the same depth, heart, close relationships and authenticity that our viewers have come to expect and will pair nicely with our already established pop culture hits,” ABC Family president Michael Riley said. I hear the network’s third drama pilot, Terminales, is still very much in contention and appears likely to get a series order contingent on some deal-making. As for ABC Family’s two comedy pilots, Miseducation aka Phys Ed and Continuing Fred, I hear neither is going forward.
That could be in part a result of the strength of ABC Family’s drama pilots. The network had originally planned to pick up two of the three but all three became instant contenders once they were delivered. Twisted was an early frontrunner, getting permission to start making if-come deals to writers in early December. Then the Newtown tragedy hit, raising questions whether a series about a 16-year-old convicted murderer in high school would make it to the air. ABC Family brass appeared unfazed, bringing in David Babcock (Brothers & Sisters) as potential showrunner in early January. Twisted is described a mystery centered on a charismatic 16 year old (Avan Jogia), with a troubled past who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. He becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home. Co-starring in the series are Maddie Hasson, Kylie Bunbury, Kimberly Quinn, Sam Robards, newcomer Ashton Moio and Denise Richards. Babcock executive produces with creator Adam Milch and Gavin Polone (ABC Family‘s Jane By Design).
The Fosters too got a boost, with Joanna Johnson (Make It Or Break It) recruited as executive producer/showrunner last month in anticipation of a pickup. Created/executive produced by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige (Queer As Folk), Fosters is about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. It stars Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, newcomer Maia Mitchell, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez. Simon Fields, Benny Medina and Greg Gugliotta will also serve as executive producers.
The series orders come on the heels of successful winter premieres of ABC Family’s returning dramas Switched at Birth, Bunheads, Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game last month.

go, joanna johnson!!!!
I was interested only in two ABC Family pilots this season and they both go to series. Nice! Good for Jennifer Lopez. Now that she’s done as an actress she can still produce quality shows. Oh, and I hope the two moms stay lesbians and won’t go the straight route. You know the one who was straight before. I hope she won’t get steamy with her ex-husband.
i agree. we don’t need “the kids are all right” part deux.
Congrats to Brad and Peter!! They are two of the nicest and hardest working guys out there!
I really hope it is good news for Terminales. I read that script 3 months ago and it was amazing. They have a great cast and it would be perfect on ABC Family. I am glad ABC Family is being smart and picking up their strongest shows instead of a 1 bad comedy. They should pick up all 3 dramas and the network will continue to have great shows on television.
I truly adore Jennifer Lopez she is one of my favorite celebrities.
I thought Terminales sounded the best!
Love Teri polo , this is an amazing script ! Great cast , not to mention jenifer Lopez is the producer , there is nothing like this on tv . This show is also very ethnic , good for abc family !!!
Definitely pulling for Terminales too – the pilot’s adorable and Susanna and Joni are crazy talented…
SOCIO is the perfect title for a Gavin Polone-produced show.
I don’t like the name change for Socio.
The Fosters has a really good cast. I hope it delivers and is paired with Switched at Birth. Bunheads is dreadful.
they had to change the name though because of newtown. I personally think that if they really were concerned about newtown they would have waited till a year after newtown to begin it.
I was unaware that Bunheads had a “successful winter premiere.” I doubt they’ll be using that phrase when the show is canceled in a couple of months.
While I dread ABC Family dramas, I might check out The Fosters. Teri Polo is always a lot of fun. Twisted is a much better name than Socio, and I might give it a shot for Sam Robards’s sake. ABC Family couldn’t lose with Miseducation (although Phys Ed is a much better name). It would get the lowest common denominator viewers, but it would also get the intellectuals who want to see Samm Levine in something post-Freaks.
Shame on Jennifer Lopez and the ABC “Family” Channel.
It is pathetic what liberals in Hollywood are doing to America. It is shameful that these people are doing it under the name of Family. I would hope that no one allows their children to watch this channel.
You know we have 21st century, right? Go back to 18th century. It would be the best for you. If it wasn’t for those liberals, you wouldn’t have known how to read and write or go to college or you wouldn’t have the right to vote. Cause you know all those hardcore Christians like you believe that woman’s place is at home and being submissive to her husband. I’m gay, have black husband and my parents are true Christians who supports me and love me unconditionally. They do believe in God but do not take Bible so literally.
Lisa, you have problems. Seek help.
Love, A Human Being
Uh… I hate the channel, but you are even more despicable.
Kudos Lisa.
See the haters under you hate.
Lisa, if you don’t like the channel, then don’t watch it. Nobody is forcing you. Vote with your eyeballs. I don’t think it’s your place to judge others for not living up to your personal standards or definitions of a family. A family isn’t just an upper middle class mom, dad, and two kids all of the same ethnic background. There are different kinds families today and I think ABC Family should be applauded for making an effort to showing the diversity.
Agreed shame on them will not be watching that so tired if it being okay and shoved down out throats
…It’s not being shoved down your throat… If you don’t agree with the show, then just don’t watch it. easy as that. And really, whats so wrong about it? two people in a loving and stable seeming relationship taking care of and raising kids who wouldn’t otherwise have a place to live? I can’t see anything but good things there …Oh it’s two women -so what? The usual case against two men being able to raise a child is there needing a mother, a female presence. Well lookie, theres two. And hey, if you don’t think gay or lesbian couples are ok/should get married and/or raise kids, don’t be with someone of your gender, try to marry them, or raise kids with them. Let others live their lives how they want to. It’s not your life, and it’s not anyone’s place to dictate who its okay for someone to love.
Fingers crossed for Terminales. I hear it’s really well done.
I like abc family dramas over their comedies. I’m rooting for all three of them. They sound like great additions to the network. Come on Terminales!
I am so happy that they picked up Twisted. I was worried they wouldn’t. I will definitely watch it. I can’t wait for it to premiere.
ABC Family…bring back HUGE! The only good show on tv in the last several years. And as far as all that liberal stuff etc, the biggest joke of all is that Honey Boo Boo is a show on the LEARNING CHANNEL! Anyway, bring back HUGE–PLEEEEASE!
Peter is amazing it will be great
Lisa, go back to your televangelist channel and leave the entertainment to the liberal creatives.
Hey, for those saying it’s wrong, and that it’s being shoved down their throats. Just a little message.
…It’s not being shoved down your throat… If you don’t agree with the show, then just don’t watch it. Easy as that. No one is forcing you. Change the channel, or even, hey, turn off the tv, and go read a book. Expand your mind. And really, whats so wrong about it? Two people in a loving and stable seeming relationship taking care of and raising kids who wouldn’t otherwise have a place to live? I can’t see anything but good things there …Oh it’s two women… -So what? The usual case against two men being able to raise a child is there needing a mother, a female presence. Well lookie, there’s two. And hey, if you don’t think gay or lesbian couples are ok/should get married and/or raise kids, don’t be with someone of your gender, try to marry them, and/or raise kids with them. Let others live their lives how they want to. It’s not your life, and it’s not anyone’s place to dictate who its okay for someone to love. It wont affect your day to day life, except maybe being invited to a few more weddings. No one is going to force you to be gay. Kids won’t be taught ‘to be gay’ in schools, if anything it’ll be like how its is now, where they learn acceptance, and tolerance of people different than themselves. Not to belittle people for something they don’t choose for themselves (because really, would YOU choose to be bullied in school, be constantly told you’re wrong, and a sinner, and unnatural, to have fewer rights than a heterosexual person, to have basic rights denied? i don’t know anyone who would.), to not exclude or treat people poorly for being different. To judge people on who they are, how the treat other people, not the color of their skin, or if they have glasses, or braces, or their hair color, or nationality, or religion, or gender, or who they are attracted to and fall in love with. Ya know, good things. That stop things like Holocausts, genocides, and slavery from happening.
You know how we think things like slavery, segregation, less rights for women, the holocaust, those things, are so bad and horrible? Well once upon a time, people thought they were fine and dandy. Even used the Bible to justify themselves. Well, hopefully one day, -no, one day soon, homosexuality will be on that list, and homophobes will be largely considered as bad as racists, nazis, and sexists, as well they should.
We hear every day about different races, sexual preferences and genders that are being discriminated against. It is a shame when people feel that they have to scream as loud as the can to be who they really are. If there are two people of the same sex that finds happiness in each other’s arms that is their prerogative but please don’t put it in my face. I would never push my beliefs on someone else and believe me that it is hard for me because I am so opinionated. It is simple for me and the way I want to raise my children. So I will choose to block ABC Family so my 7 and 8 year old daughters won’t be exposed at too much of a young age to this show. I just have one thing to say be proud of who you are and stop feeling that you have to broadcast your race, sexual preferences or genders as I won’t broadcast to you mine.

@Rd
The only reason you can possibly believe that your views aren’t “broadcasted” onto others is because this country is a heteronormative patriarchy.
The heterosexual family/couple/person is pushed on everyone all the time. You just don’t notice because it is a reflection of what you believe to be true/right.
This show is just showing another side of family, one that does exist, but is ignored as it doesn’t fit with the White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy that is the United States.
I can’t wait to see this show. Media representation is always important and the promo looks promising.
